Thomas won two Emmys playing "Jay Gold" on the 1980s-90s CBS sitcom, "Murphy Brown." He was also known for his annual appearances on David Letterman's late-night talks shows.

Before he embarked on a solo film career, he partnered with legendary singer and actor, Dean Martin. Many knew Lewis for his annual "The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon," which raised money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

He counted among his friends Dr. Martin Luther King and Medgar Evars. Gregory wrote several books, including "Nigger: An Autobiography." His new book, "Defining Moments in Black History" is due in September.
