Barbarella is based on the creator created by Jean-Claude Forest
“The Architect of Her Destiny”
Barbarella is a female, French, science fiction comic book hero. Created by the late French comic book writer-artist, Jean-Claude Forest (1930-98), Barbarella first appeared in a comics serial for the French publication, V Magazine, in the spring of 1962.
In 2017, Dynamite Entertainment began publishing original English language Barbarella comic books. The latest series is Barbarella Volume 2. It is written by Sarah Hoyt; drawn by Madibek Musabekov and Tommaso Bianchi; colored by Ivan Nunes; and lettered by Carlos M. Mangual. In this new series, Barbarella and her pals, Vix, and Taln (the blind “angel” and A.I. friend.), travel through space in service of the Brotherhood, combating tyranny.
Barbarella Volume 2 #6 (“The Architect of Her Destiny”) offers the story of how Barbarella and Vix first met. It involves a few questions. What do the beings of Tynechon want … in general and with Barbarella? And what does “The Lady of Qruyx” a.k.a. “the Lady” want with Barbarella? Why does she want to kill her?
Those questions might have to wait. On a mission of peace and freedom for “The Brotherhood,” Barbarella is accused of trying to kill a king … she just made love to! Can her new friend Vix save Barbarella … without drawing attention to herself?
THE LOWDOWN: Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department recently began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Barbarella Volume 2 #6, which is the fifth issue of the title that I have read. In fact, this is only the fifth Barbarella comic book that I have ever read.
In Issue #6, Sarah Hoyt offers a “filler” story that acts as both a placeholder and as an important origin story. Hoyt puts the main story on hold, but this chapter, “The Architect of Her Destiny,” contains story elements that will be important in coming chapters of this series.
Artist Tommaso Bianchi comes in for this issue, and he does an excellent job in keeping with the visual and graphical style that series artist, the amazing Madibek Musabekov, has established. Fans of space opera science fiction will find that Barbarella Volume 2 is a consistently good comic book. Yes, I wanted more of the main story, but the consistency shows in this nice side story chapter.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Barbarella will want to try Barbarella Volume 2.
