JOHN BOYEGA - From Variety: John Boyega addresses the Sith elephant in the "Star Wars" room. To racist white fans of "Star Wars," there is no room for a black heroes
OBIT - From Variety: New Zealand actor of the stage, musical theater, and film and television, Clive Revill, died at the age of 94, Tuesday, March 11, 2025. He provided the voice of "The Emperor" in the original theatrical release of 1980s' "The Empire Strikes Back." Revill was twice nominated for a Tony Award, "Best Featured Actor for a Musical" for his role in the original 1961 Broadway production of "Irma La Douce" and "Best Actor in a Musical" for his role in the original 1963 Broadway production of "Oliver!"
ANDOR - From THR: The acclaimed Disney+ "Star Wars" drama, "Andor," is now also available on Hulu. The first three episodes are free on the Disney+ "YouTube" channel. The 12-episode second season debuts exclusively on Disney+ April 22nd.
REY SKYWALKER - From Variety: The planned "Rey Skywalker" movie now has a writer, George Nolfi, ("The Bourne Ultimatum"). Daisey Ridley will reprise her role as Rey.
FUTURE - From THR: Ryan Gosling is reportedly in talks to be the star of director Shawn Levy's ("Deadpool & Wolverine") planned "Star Wars" movie.
MARVEL COMICS - From BleedingCool: Marvel is launching a new flagship "Star Wars" comic book series in May 2025. This new "Star Wars #1" will debut stories set after the events depicted in the 1983 film, "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi." It will be written by Alex Segura and drawn by Phil Noto. According to the press information: "It's the dawn of the New Republic, and as the dust settles after the Battle of Jakku our rebel heroes — Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, and Han Solo — find themselves forging a new order as pirates and thieves swarm to fill the power vacuum left behind by the fallen Empire." The series will reintroduce characters like Mon Mothma and Beilert Valance, among others.
MARVEL COMICS - From BleedingCool: To celebrate "Black History Month," Marvel Comics will celebrate Black "Star Wars" characters with variant covers featuring them on four "Star Wars" titles published in February 2025.
NEW TRILOGY - From Deadline: Lucasfilm has hired writer-producer-director Simon Kinberg to develop a new "Star Wars" trilogy - Episodes 10, 11, and 12.
From THR: Related to the Simon Kinberg news, the new trilogy will supposedly focus on the the sequel trilogy star, "Rey Skywalker."
MARVEL COMICS - From BleedingCool: Marvel will publish a "Star Wars" one-shot comic book, "Star Wars: A New Legacy," in 2025. It will set up the relaunch of Marvel's ongoing "Star Wars" flagship comic book and also celebrate the tenth anniversary of Marvel regaining the license to publish "Star Wars" titles from Dark Horse Comics. Since then, however, Dark Horse gained a new license to publish "Star Wars" comics for juvenile readers.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro: The winner of the 3/28 to 3/30/2025 weekend box office is Amazon/MGM's "A Working Man" with an estimated take of 15.2 million dollars.
OSCARS/SCANDAL - From AP: Human rights activist and filmmaker, Hamdan Ballal, was one of four filmmakers who received an Oscar statuette when the film, "No Other Land," won the "Best Documentary Feature Film" at the recent 97th Academy Awards. Well, Ballal recently returned to his home in Palestine's West Bank where Israeli settlers whooped his ass. After the beat down, he was detained by the Israeli military for at least 24 hours before being released.

He starred as "Aramis" in "The Three Musketeers" film trilogy that began with the 1973 film, "The Three Musketeers." He was the first actor to play "Jason Bourne," doing so in the 1988 ABC miniseries, "The Bourne Identity." Chamberlain was called the King of the Mini-Series" for his roles in several miniseries, the most famous being the 1980 NBC miniseries, "Shogun," and the 1983 ABC miniseries, "The Thorn Birds." Chamberlain received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work in television. Chamberlain was also drafted into the U.S. Army and served from 1956 to 1958, including a stint in post-war Korea.
From Deadline: American film and television actor and Vietnam War veteran, Denis Arndt, has died at the age of 86, Tuesday, March 25, 2025. Arndt had a prolific career in television, including a recurring role in David E. Kelley TV series, such as "L.A. Law" and "Picket Fences." Among his best known film roles were in "Basic Instice" (1992) and "S.W.A.T." (2003). In 2017, Arndt received a Tony Award nomination in the category of "Best Actor in a Play" for his role in a 2016 production of the play, "Heisenberg." In 1957, Arndt entered the U.S. Army and eventually became a helicopter pilot. For his service in Vietnam, Arndt received two "Purple Hearts," 27 "Air Medals," and "The Army Commendation Medal."

“Who is the Space Spectre?!”
Space Ghost is a superhero character created by the American animation studio and production company, Hanna-Barbera Productions. The character first appeared in the Saturday morning cartoon series, “Space Ghost,” which was originally broadcast on CBS from September 1966 to September 1967 for 20 episodes.
In his original incarnation, Space Ghost was a superhero whose base of operations was a small world known as “Ghost Planet.” He fought super-villains in outer space with his teen sidekicks, Jan and Jace, and their monkey, Blip. His main weapons were power bands he wore around his wrists and lower arms; the bands fired off multiple energy beam-based attacks, including heat, cold, and force, to name a few. Space Ghost could also fly, survive in space, and turn invisible (his “Inviso Power”). He also had a space ship known as “the Phantom Cruiser.”
Space Ghost sporadically appeared in various comic book publications over a fifty year period. Dynamite Entertainment has just launched a new Space Ghost comic book as part of its licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Entitled Space Ghost Volume 1, it is written by David Pepose; drawn by Jonathan Lau; colored by Andrew Dalhouse; and lettered by Taylor Esposito. In the new series, twins Jan and Jace Keplar and their pet monkey, Blip, meet that legendary cosmic vigilante known as “the Space Ghost.”
Space Ghost Volume One #10 (“Who is the Space Spectre?!”) opens at the Interstellar Research Platform near Black Hole X. There, a man with dark plans gets a comeuppance before the plans get a chance to be born, let alone turn dark.
Meanwhile, at Robo Corp Tower, the CEO of Robo Corp, Dr. Xander Ibal, plots the launch of “Project Ultima,” via the “Ultima Satellite,” which will give Robo Corp galaxy-wide expansion and influence. A dark and shocking figure from the future emerges, however, presenting a new threat to Robo Corp, to Space Ghost and his family, and to everyone.
THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. Space Ghost #10, Volume One is a recent issue that I have received.
Every time I feel like I'm running out of gas when it comes to reviewing writer David Pepose and artist Jonathan Lau's Space Ghost, I read another issue and get a jolt up my ass. Suddenly, I'm feeling new energy to sing the praises of this series. If the original 1966-67 TV series were said to have a true sequel, it would be this reboot that is more like a narrative retelling than an IP demolition, which is what many reboots turn out to be. Pepose is certainly imaginative in the elements he brings to this Space Ghost comic book, but this time, in the plight of the “villain,” there is genuinely poignant drama that resonates throughout the story.
Artist Jonathan Lau turns this story into all-powerful comic book storytelling. He builds the drama and blows up the action, and I guess I finally have to admit something. I love the brawny, gritty, musculature that he layers on the figures of Space Ghost and on this chapter's “adversary.” It is almost like vintage physique photography, and it gives me a case of man-crush. Anyway, Lau is doing superstar work on this series, and I don't know if this is his best work. It gets hard to tell because sometimes Lau's work here seems like all “be best.”
Andrew Dalhouse's lovely colors continue to set this story afire, turning drama into an inferno. Letterer Taylor Esposito continues to do his best cinematic scores, giving sound to the elegant silence of comic books that the best letterers bring to life in the reader's imagination.
I'm having a blast reading Space Ghost Volume One, dear readers. Don't say that you want “great stories with great characters” – in a whiny voice – if you aren't reading this. That only makes me doubt your sincerity about wanting the “great.”

The Omega Eleven created by James Aquilone and Zac Atkinson
The Omega Eleven is an upcoming four issue miniseries from Bram Stoker Award-winning writer James Aquilone and artist-colorist Zac Atkinson. Published by Monstrous Books, the series is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign. Letterer Jeremiah Lambert and flatter Thiago Aguiar complete the creative time. The series focuses on a time-traveler who must assemble history's greatest villains in order pull off an impossible heist in an effort to save the Omniverse.
The Omega Eleven #1 introduces Doctor Omega and his partner, 14-year-old Jack Dawkins, a.k.a. “The Artful Dodger.” Aboard Omega's time-traveling ship, “the Cosmos,” they travel to Camelot, circa 1138 AD, to steal “the Philosopher's Stone” from Merlin. However, the first steps in that process begin a series unfortunate, then catastrophic events that create a rift in the Omniverse.
There is a cascade of disastrous convergences, so the question is how does one fix an existential disaster of the ultimate scale? The answer is you gather a band of eleven. So who will be the Eleven?
THE LOWDOWN: James Aquilone provided me with an advanced PDF copy for review of The Omega Eleven #1. I can say that as a literary and comic book editor, James Aquilone delivers the good stuff. Now, he seeks to deliver the good stuff as a comic book writer. I have to admit that I really like The Omega Eleven #1.
This first issue has more than a passing resemblance to the BBC's legendary science fiction television series, “Doctor Who” (1963 to present). There are several appearances and references from vintage literary works. Of note are the works of Maurice Leblanc and Gaston Leroux. The Omega Eleven will remind readers of at least the first volume of Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (1999-2000), Terry Gilliam's cult film, Time Bandits (1981), and the beloved Robert Zemeckis film, Back to the Future (1985). Of course, the Arthurian legends play a big role in this first issue and likely will continue to haunt this narrative.
That aside, The Omega Eleven feels like a labor of love. Aquilone has fashioned his influences and beloved storytelling into something that is familiar, but eccentric and contrary in its own unique way. He left me begging for more, and since he provided me with an advanced PDF copy for review, I won't ignore any future links of coming issues that he sends.
I am a little familiar with artist Zac Atkinson, but what he does in this first issue shocks me. He is a gifted storyteller in the medium of comics, and he brings this story to life. I don't know how many artists could match his storytelling here, which is a gumbo of weird fiction, pulp fantasy, vintage literature, pop comics, and popular culture. In modern phraseology, Aquilone and Atkinson have killed it with this first issue. I hope they deliver on the promise and the potential on display here in future issues. In the meantime, run over to the The Omega Eleven Kickstarter and give like your entertainment life depended on it.

Review: "THE BEEKEEPER" Swarms with Vicarious Vigilante Fun

The Beekeeper is a 2024 American vigilante action-thriller from director David Ayer and writer Kurt Wimmer. Starring Jason Statham, the film follows an assassin who sets out for revenge after his kindhearted landlady falls victim to a phishing scam.
The Beekeeper opens in rural Massachusetts. There, Adam Clay (Jason Statham) is a quiet beekeeper who rents land and barn space from retired school teacher, Eloise Parker (Phylicia Rashad). The two have a warm relationship. Eloise also manages a children's charity and watches over her retirement funds. However, Eloise falls victim to a phishing and hacking scam operated by a call center, “United Data Group.” The lead hacker, Boyd Garnett (David Witts), tricks Eloise into giving him access to her computer, whereupon he drains it of all her life savings and of the two million dollars she manages for the charity. Eloise is devastated and tragedy strikes.
In response, Adam sets out on a mission of revenge. He heads to Boston to confront Derek Danforth (Josh Hutcherson), the owner of “Nine Star United,” the company behind United Data Group. Danforth, however, is very well connected, so well connected that it is impossible to imagine. Soon, Adam Clay is taking on the FBI Boston field office, S.W.A.T., and hired mercenaries. How can one man take on all that? Well, Adam Clay, the beekeeper, is also an former assassin and operative of the type known as a “Beekeeper.”
If you enjoyed the 2014 Denzel Washington revenge vehicle, The Equalizer, and its sequels, and the 2014 Keanu Reeves revenge vehicle, John Wick, and its sequels, you will likely enjoy The Beekeeper. First, it's one of the better movies from the filmography of director David Ayer (Suicide Squad). Secondly, it is one of the better movies written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium).
Third, it's Jason Statham, and if you are a fan of his (and I am), then The Beekeeper shows that he has not lost his sting... his punch... his kick... or his firearm and bladed weapon skills. Plus, the allegorical and symbolic nature of Adam Clay as both a beekeeper and as a “Beekeeper” are quite clever and genuinely connected. I don't want to say more because I find this movie's plot and plot points easy to spoil, but I can say that it is a blast to watch. Even if you are not the biggest Statham fans, dear readers, I believe that you will enjoy – to some extent – this tightly composed and cheerfully violent movie. I can say that anyone who gets in the way of Statham's Adam Clay – good guy or bad guy – is put in a world of pain.
The rest of the performances are okay. The other characters are merely there to be acted upon by Adam Clay. Still, Oscar-winner Jeremy Irons (Reversal of Fortune) and Oscar-nominee Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) are sadly wasted in this film. I really only watched The Beekeeper in preparation for Statham's new film with David Ayer (as of this writing), the ridiculously titled, A Working Man, which I may or may not see during its theatrical release. Still, I am glad that I stopped putting off seeing The Beekeeper because it is a hugely entertaining action movie. It floats like a butterfly and stings like a demonic bee.

Review: "ULTRAVIOLET" is Mostly Misspent Potential

Ultraviolet is a 2006 American science fiction action film from writer-director Kurt Wimmer. The film focuses on a woman infected with a virus that gives her superhuman and vampire-like powers who has to protect a boy thought to carry antigens that would destroy others like her.
Ultraviolet opens in the late 21st century. The Hemoglophagic Virus has infected the human population – a disease causing symptoms that many associate with vampires. Those afflicted gain enhanced intelligence, fantastic stamina, and lightning-fast speed (like the vampires in Blade). The world is divided into those who don’t have it (normal humans), and those who do (called “hemophages”).
The government, led by the powerful scientist, Vicecardinum Ferdinand Daxus (Nick Chinlund), hunts hemophages in hopes of wiping them out. One woman, a highly-skilled hemophage warrior named Violet Song jat Shariff (Milla Jovovich), infiltrates a governmental research station. Violet steals a case containing a secret weapon that will reportedly wipe out the infected. However, Violet finds herself on the run and protecting a mysterious child, called “Six” (Cameron Bright), who may or may not be infected with a virus dangerous to hemophages. Now, Daxus and his entire military force is out to get her and the child.
From writer/director Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium), Ultraviolet is non-interactive entertainment (a movie) trying to act like interactive entertainment (a videogame). Awash in bright colors (computer-generated neon), the film looks like a comic book, especially when Milla Jovovich poses – standing still and trying to look badass before she begins a fight sequence. It’s the only time her performance can be said to be anything near good. Most of the time, she is so dreadful that it’s impossible to believe that she’s been acting for nearly two decades.
Ultraviolet has a lot of potential, but ultimately it’s just a poorly developed and disastrously executed movie that a computer made all gooey with color and the filmmakers filled with an electronics expo full of fancy gadgets.
