OBITS:

From Variety:  American actor and former child star, Jay North, has died at the age of 73, Sunday, April 6, 2025.  North was best known for his starring role in "Dennis Mitchell" in the former ABC sitcom, "Dennis the Menace" (1959-63), which was based on the newspaper comic strip created by Hank Ketchum. Before that starring role, North made appearances on such TV series as "The Eddie Fisher Show," "The Milton Berle Show," and "Wanted: Dead or Alive." Typecast as "Dennis Mitchell," North's appeared in a number of other TV series and a few films before leaving acting in the 1980s.

From Deadline:  American musician, Clem Burke, has died at the age of 70, Sunday, April 6, 2025.  Burke was best known as the drummer for the American rock band, "Blondie."  He joined the band less than a year after its founding and appeared on all its studio albums along with founders, Chris Stein and Debbie Harry.  During the 1980s and 1990s when Blondie was disbanded, Burke played drums for "the Romantics," Pete Townsend, "Eurythmics," Iggy Pop, and Joan Jett, to name a few.  On a few occasions, he played drums for "the Ramones" under the name "Elvis Ramone."  Burke was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 2006 as a member of Blondie, and he was nominated for three Grammy Awards as a member of the group.

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character.  In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics has also published superhero comic books featuring offbeat characters.  The latest is a new four-issue comic book series, entitled Archie is Mr. Justice.  The third issue is written by Kenny Porter; drawn by Maria Sanapo; colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.  Archie is Mr. Justice focuses on teenager Archie Andrews and his superhero persona, “Mr. Justice.”  Now, Archie has to choose between two loves – Betty Cooper and Riverdale.

Archie is Mr. Justice #3 opens in Pickens Park, Riverdale.  There, Betty Cooper meets with Harper, a reporter.  Betty has arranged this meeting in order to tell the story of how Mr. Justice changed her life, how he made her brave.  This is also a story, however, of love and heartbreak.

With great powers comes great sacrifice, but when Archie is faced with having to choose between his responsibilities and his first love, Betty Cooper, will his duties to Riverdale win out over his heart?  And what choices will Betty make?  Plus, there are appearances by Kid Wicked, Mad Flame, and the rise of the “Defendo-Bots.”

THE LOWDOWN:   I have been reading comic books, on and off, for decades.  I have sporadically read Archie Comics titles over that time.  For many years now, Archie's marketing department has been sending PDF copies of some of their titles for review.  Archie is Mr. Justice No. 3 is the latest.

Archie Comics has been reviving some of the old M.L.J. “Golden Age” superheroes for several years now.  The latest to rise from the grave is “Mr. Justice,” also known as “the Royal Wraith.”  Created by writer Joe Blair and artist Sam Cooper, Mr. Justice was an 18th century English prince who was murdered by rebels.  Chance and circumstance brought about his return to the mortal world in the 1940s in the form of Mr. Justice.  Mr. Justice first appeared in Blue Ribbon Comics #9 (cover dated: February 1941; M.L.J. Magazines), which, in a bit of meta-fiction, is the comic book that appears in Archie is Mr. Justice #1 as one of Jughead's comic books.  From this particular comic book, Archie takes inspiration for his “Mr. Justice” identity.

For this third issue, writer Kenny Porter and artist Maria Sanapo delve into the complications that come from having both a superhero identity and a personal life, which the prior issue also did.  Porter's script captures the birth of young love – in full bloom – and then, it captures the arrival of complications.  I can say that the emotions and romance that Porter depicts resonate in the story.  The coming on of romantic troubles and later, the hope of reconciliation and maturation engaged me; I was surprised to find myself investing, as a reader, in Archie and Betty's relationship.

Sanapo's art and storytelling offer a feeling of nostalgia and a sense of now.  Her line work is classic comics cool, but the storytelling is a storm of complications and subtle conflicts of interests that readers were unlikely to find in comic book romance six or seven decades ago.  Sanapo's art is a blending of eye-pleasing graphics and rich storytelling.  Honestly, I think Sanapo's work here makes an argument that this story should have been a graphic novel instead of only being a single issue.

Glenn Whitmore's colors capture the nuance and shifting moods of this story, and I think he is perfect for Sanapo's art.  Jack Morelli's lettering provides a steady beat for a story that finds the messiness of relationships with each page and also the fun of the explosive destruction of superhero fight comics

I am surprised by Archie is Mr. Justice #3.  It is as strong as prior issues, but is also different.  It stands out in a way that will hopefully attract readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Archie Comics' superhero titles will want to try Archie is Mr. Justice No. 3.

Review: Tyler Perry's "DUPLICITY" - Come On, Man

SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW:

-- Tyler Perry's Duplicity is for Tyler Perry's hardcore fans

-- The last 20 minutes of “Duplicity” are by far the best, but they are also filled with implausible and crazy crap, too

Tyler Perry's Duplicity is a 2025 drama and crime thriller from writer-director Tyler Perry.  The film is an Amazon “Prime Original,” and it began streaming on the service April 20, 2025.  Duplicity finds a high-powered attorney taking on her most personal case when she attempts to find the truth behind the fatal shooting of an unarmed Black man by a White police officer.

Duplicity opens in Atlanta, Georgia and introduces the high-powered female attorney, Marley Wells (Kat Graham).  Her best friend is Fela Blackburn (Meagan Tandy), a co-anchor for the television station, Channel 3's “Early for Us” morning TV show.  One day, while jogging, Fela's husband, Rodney (Joshua Adeyeye), is shot and killed by a white rookie police officer, Caleb Kaine (Jimi Stanton).

Marley becomes the grieving widow, Fela's attorney, and suddenly she is taking on the city in a wrongful death civil suit.  Marley's boyfriend, Tony (Tyler Lepley), a private investigator and disgraced former police officer, helps her investigate the case.  Fela's Channel 3 colleagues – Shannon Markus (Shannon LaNeir), her co-anchor, and Sam (Nick Barrotta), the station's chief investigator – also volunteer their services for Marley's investigation.

The fatal police shooting of Rodney becomes a hot-button political issue and protests and violent riots erupt.  The case seems to be going in Marley and Fela's favor, but Marley is soon forced to stop ignoring the troubling signs and unanswered questions that surround the shooting.

I thought that Mea Culpa, a “Netflix Original” film released in February 2024, was likely Tyler Perry's craziest non-Madea film to date, being even wackier than his 2013 film, Temptations: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor.  However, Perry's 2024 Amazon Prime Video drama-thriller, Divorce in the Black, released mere months after Mea Culpa, is Perry's craziest non-Medea film, at least of the ones I have seen.  Perry's latest Prime Video film is not quite as crazy as Divorce in the Black, but neither is a good film (although I would say that Divorce in the Black is a little better than Duplicity).

Duplicity is simply an empty film, and I think the reason is the screenwriting.  Watching this film, I got the idea that Tyler Perry wasn't trying very hard, either as a director or writer, and especially not as a writer.  One of the reasons the performances seem so listless is that the actors really don't have much with which to work in terms of story or character.  Also, Duplicity really is not a police shooting movie, nor a “Black Lives Matter” movie, nor even social commentary, for that matter (despite some flatly delivered “commentary” at the end).  I can't say much more than that.

The last 20 minutes of the Duplicity are by far the most watchable, but even those minutes are filled with implausible and frankly inadvertently comical moments.  However, I must admit that there is a particular set of violent acts in the last act that are cathartic.  Ultimately, Tyler Perry's Duplicity is for Tyler Perry's biggest fans – alone.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Amy Pascal is moving her "Pascal Pictures" banner to Amazon MGM Studios in a new first-look deal in the wake of Pascal signing on to produce the next round of James Bond films with producer David Heyman.

DISNEY/ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Fox has signed a megadeal with Disney TV Studios in which it will pick up four seasons each of "The Simpsons," "Bob's Burgers," "Family Guy," and "American Dad," which is returning to Fox from TBS.  Each season of the four seasons will be comprised of 15 episodes and the deal runs through 2028-29 broadcast season.

CINEMACON - From WorldofReel:  Apparently, footage from "Weapons," the new film from Zach Cregger ("Barbarian"), creeped people out at CinemaCon. The film is due in August 2025.

From WorldofReel:  Warner Bros. announced at CinemaCon 2025 that they are working on a new "Looney Tunes" movie... although they have dumped one ("The Day the Earth Blew Up") and are looking to dump another ("Coyote vs Acme").

From YahooComingSoon:  There is a persistent rumor that Warner Bros. wants to sell off the entire "Looney Tunes" brand.

JOHN WICK - From WorldofReel:  Keanu Reeves will reportedly return for "John Wick 5," which has apparently been confirmed by Lionsgate.  Franchise director, Chad Stahelski, is also reportedly on board to return.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  Sydney Sweeney is in talks to star in Legendary’s “Gundam” movie.  It would be adapted from the Japanese military science fiction franchise that was initiated by the Japanese anime television series, "Mobile Suit Gundam," which began its 43-episode run in 1979.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American film actor, Val Kilmer, has died at the age of 65, Tuesday, April 1, 2025.  Kilmer was best known for taking film roles that transcended his striking looks.  The first decade of his career is filled with films and performances that became favorites of his fans:  "Top Secret!" (1984), "Real Genius" (1985), "Top Gun" (1986), "Willow" (1988), "The Doors" (1991), "Thunderheart" (1992), "True Romance" (1993), "Batman Forever" (1995), and "Heat" (1995), to name a few.  His most famous performance is certainly as "Doc Holliday" in the American Western film, "Tombstone" (1993).  For his stunning turn as Holliday, Kilmer did not receive any notice or nominations from the major film awards organizations.

From Variety:  Hollywood offers tributes to Val Kilmer a day after his passing. That includes people who worked with him such as Michael Mann, Josh Brolin, and Francis Ford Coppola.

From Deadline:  American film television actress, Sian Barbara Allen, has died at the age of 78, Monday, March 31, 2025.  She appeared in the 1972 horror thriller, "You'll Like My Mother," which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination in the category of "New Star of the Year - Actress," and the 1974 American Western film, "Billy Two Hats."  She was a prolific TV actress in the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in such series as "Gunsmoke," "The Waltons," and "L.A. Law."

AVENGERS - From Variety:  Halle Berry says fans should not expect to see her name among the actors appearing in "Avengers: Doomsday."

SPIDER-MAN - From THR:  "Spider-Man 4" is untitled no longer.  The fourth "Spider-Man" film starring Tom Holland has a title, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day."  It is set to hit theaters July 31, 2026 and will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings").

IRON FIST - From Variety:  At a recent anime convention, actor Finn Jones, let the world know that he wants a second chance to play the Marvel Comics' character, Danny Rand/Iron Fist, although the character has come under heavy criticism in recent times.  Finn played Iron Fist in two seasons of the Netflix/Marvel series, "Iron Fist" (2017, 2018) and in the Netflix miniseries, "The Defenders" (2017), and one episode of Netflix's "Luke Cage" Season 2. 

BLADE - From WorldofReel:  According to a well-placed source, Marvel Studios has cancelled its plans for a "Blade" movie.  Apparently, Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali will appear as Blade in a supporting or costarring role in other planned Marvel films.

AVENGERS - From THR:  In a four-hour long livestream, Marvel Studios' revealed the cast of "Avengers: Doomsday," although the names revealed are reportedly not the only stars who will appear in the film.

From ComicBookMovie:  The site has the full cast list of the 27 actors set to star in Marvel's 2026 Avengers event movie, "Avengers: Doomsday."

THUNDERBOLTS - EmpireOnline:  The website, "Empire Online" previews "Empire" magazine's "May 2025" issue, which goes in depth on Marvel Studios' next film, "Thunderbolts" (May 2nd).  The film's director, Jake Schreier, sits "Toy Story 3" as an influence.

DOOMSDAY - From Variety:  Brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of "Avengers: Doomsday," had some news about Oscar-winning actor Robert Downey Jr.'s intense preparation for the film.  They said that Downey, who is playing Doctor Doom, is already writing backstory for the character and is coming up with costume ideas. Downey previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

BLACK PANTHER - From Variety:  Angela Bassett says that she was deserving of winning the "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar for her performance in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." Although she was nominated, she lost to Jamie Lee Curtis.

CAPTAIN AMERICA - From Variety:  "Captain America: Brave New World" tops the 2/14 to 2/16/2025 weekend box office with an estimated total of 88.5 million dollars. The film is estimated to gross 100 million dollars over the four-day Presidents Day weekend (2/14 to 2/17/2025).

THE FANTASTIC FOUR - From Deadline:  Disney/Marvel Studios has released the first teaser trailer (Feb. 4th) for "The Fantastic Four: First Steps."  There's a glimpse of Galactus, and "H.E.R.B.I.E." the robot is featured.  The film is due in theaters July 25th, 2025.

AVENGERS: - From Variety:  In a candid interview, Benedict Cumberbatch says that he will not appear as "Doctor Strange" in Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Doomsday" (2026), but that he will be all over "Avengers: Secret Wars" (2027).  He also says that there will be a third stand-alone Doctor Strange film.

SPIDER-MAN 4 - From Deadline:  Anderw Garfield, "Spider-Man" in "The Amazing Spider-Man" and in "Spider-Man: No Way Home," denies that he has been cast in Sony/Marvel's "Spider-Man 4."

THUNDERBOLTS - From EW:  "Entertainment Weekly" has an exclusive preview of Marvel Studios' "Thunderbolts," including new images from the film.  Also, in the article, actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus says that all the schemes of her character, Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, will be revealed.

GOLDEN GLOBES - From CBR:  Kathryn Hahn has been nominated for her role of "Agatha Harkness" in the Disney+ series, "Agatha All Along."  Hahn received a nomiation in the category of "Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy" at the 2025 / 82nd Annual Golden Globes.  Hahn is the fourth actor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to received a Golden Globe nomination following Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen in the Disney+ miniseries, "WandaVision," and Angela Bassett in the 2022 film, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever."  Hahn's nomination that "Agatha All Along" received.

“The Herculoids” was an American Saturday-morning animated television series that was produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.  It originally aired on CBS for 18 episodes from September 1967 to January 1968.  Rooted in science fiction and fantasy, “The Herculoids” featured characters created and designed by the late Alex Toth (1928-2006).

"The Herculoids" was originally set on the planet Amzot and featured eight regular characters.  The main characters were members of a space barbarian family:  Zandor, the father; Tara, the mother; and Dorno, the son.  In order to keep their planet safe from invaders, they fight alongside the other five regulars, a group of giant pets:  the laser dragon, “Zok,” the space rhinoceros, “Tundro,” the rock ape, “Igoo,” and the shape-shifting duo of “Gloop and Gleep.”

Over the decades, there have been comic books featuring The Herculoids, published by Gold Key Comics, Marvel Comics, and DC Comics.  The latest is The Herculoids Volume 1, which is part of Dynamite Entertainment's licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.  The Herculoids is written by Tom Sniegoski; drawn by Craig Rousseau; colored by Omi Remalante, Jr.; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

The Herculoids Volume 1 #2 opens with a recap of how the mercenary, Quen-Tel, was able to convince a mysterious consortium to provide him with an experienced exploratory and extraction team and one of its largest refinery ships.  He was given all this so that he could lead an expedition to Amzot in a bid to steal all of Amzot's natural resources.  There is one big problem, though.

Amzot is the home of “the Herculoids,” and no matter what advantage you might think you have over them, you don't.  That's true even when you take what is supposed to be their most vulnerable family member.  F**k around; find out.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  The Herculoids Volume 1, Issue #2 is the latest, and this maybe the first comic book featuring The Herculoids solo that I have read.

The Herculoids #1 did not open with a bang.  In that debut issue, writer Tom Sniegoski offered a gentle introductory tale, although there was some “fantasy violence.  This was a chapter that reintroduced the characters of the famed vintage Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning animated series.  Issue #1 was also a tame introduction for those who are new to the tale.  With this second issue, Sniegoski unleashes the Herculoids beasts on this story that is full of intrigue and explosive action.  I think this chapter will please both longtime fans and new fans of The Herculoids.

Artist Craig Rousseau offered an unadorned first issue with plain, straightforward storytelling.  Here, he also goes wild with Issue #2, depicting lots intense action and heightened drama, showing off what he will likely bring to the series going forward. Omi Remalante, Jr.'s coloring continues to keep-it-simple-stupid with a hues that emphasize the action.  Jeff Eckleberry captures the classic vibe of old cartoons and vintage comics with his lettering.

I think The Herculoids 2025 has potential, which this second issue shows off.  I plan to come back, and perhaps, you should also, dear readers, if you are fans of this franchise.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Dynamite Entertainment's Warner Bros. comic book series and of “The Herculoids” will want to read The Herculoids Volume 1.
