NEWS:

CELEBRITY - From Variety:  The chief medical officer for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator announced the probable causes of death for the Oscar-winning actor, Gene Hackman, and his wife, Betsy Arakawa.  Arakawa died Feb. 11th of "hantavirus," a potentially deadly virus transmitted by mice.  Hackman likely died a week later (likely Feb. 18th) of cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer's disease as a significant factor.  Arakawa was last seen on surveillance cameras in public on Feb. 11th.  On February 26, 2025, police officers found Hackman and Arakawa's bodies in their home which is located in a gated community.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  CBS has cancelled "FBI" spinoffs, "FBI: Most Wanted" (six seasons) and "FBI: International" (four seasons).  "FBI," now in its seventh season, has been picked up through its ninth season.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 2/28 to 3/2/2025 weekend box office is Disney/Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World with an estimated take of 15 million dollars.

OSCARS - From AMPAS:  The Oscars are tonight (Sun., March 2nd).  Here is a nomination list for the 2025 / 97th Academy Awards ... if you are interested.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Jason Statham will return for "The Beekeeper 2," the sequel to his January 2024 worldwide hit "The Beekeeper."

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American voice actor and comedian, George Lowe, has died at the age of 67, Sunday, March 2, 2025.  Lowe is best known for voicing the character, "Space Ghost," more than any other actor.  He was the voice of "Space Ghost" on and off for about 30 years from 1994 to 2024, most notably on Cartoon Network's animated talk show parody, "Space Ghost Coast to Coast."

From Variety:  Dolly Parton has announced that her husband, businessman Carl Thomas Dean, has died at the age of 82, Monday, March 3, 2025. The couple had been married on March 30, 1966.  Dean was rarely seen in public with Parton, and they were a very private couple.

From Deadline:  American actress, record producer, songwriter, and soul and R&B singer, Angie Stone, has died at the age of 63, Saturday, March 1, 2025, having been killed in an automobile accident.  Stone released her debut solo album, "Black Diamond," in 1999.  It, along with her 2001 follow-up, "Mahogany Soul," were certified gold.  Her R&B hits included "No More Rain (In This Cloud)" (1999), "Wish I Didn't Miss You" (2001), "More Than a Woman" (2002), a duet with R&B singer, Joe.  She appeared in such films as "The Hot Chick" and "The Fighting Temptations" (2003) and she guest-starred on such TV series as "Moesha" and "Girlfriends."  Stone was a three-time Grammy Award nominee.

From Deadline:  American policeman, novelist, and television creator, Joseph Wambaugh, has died at the age of 88, Friday, February 28, 2025.  Wambaugh spent 14 years with the Los Angeles Police Department.  He mined that experience for such novels as "The New Centurions" (1971), which was adapted into film in 1972, and "The Blue Knight" (1973), which was also a 1973 TV miniseries.  Wambaugh wrote the screenplay adaptations for his novels, the nonfiction, "The Onion Field" (1973), and "The Black Marble" (1978).  Wambaugh also created the acclaimed former NBC police drama, "Police Story" (1973-78).

From Variety:  The winners at the 2025 / 97th Academy Awards have been announced.  "Anora" wins five awards, including "Best Motion Picture of the Year."

From Deadline:  The winners at the 2025 / 56th NAACP Image Awards have been announced.  Keke Palmer was named "Entertainer of the Year."  Tyler Perry and Netflix's "The Six Triple Eight" won four awards including "Outstanding Motion Picture" and "Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture" (Kerry Washington).

From Deadline:  The Screen Actors Guild has announced the winners at the 2025 / 31st SAG Awards.  "Conclave" won the top prize, "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture."

From Variety:  The winners the 2025 / 78th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) have been announced.  "Conclave" won "Best Film" and "Outstanding British Film."

From Deadline:  The winners at the 2025 / 36th Producers Guild of America Awards have been announced.  "Anora" wins the awards' top prize, "The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures."

From EW:  The Screen Actors Guild has cancelled the 2025 / 31st SAG Awards nominations announcement live-stream because of the current wildfires sweeing through the Los Angeles area.  The nominations will be announced Thursday morning, January 9th via press release and on SAG Awards website.  The SAG Award ceremony will be hired Feb. 23rd.

MOVIES - From TelegraphUK:  Famed director George Miller talks about his upcoming film, "Furiosa," and how the film's star, Anya Taylor-Joy," only has 30 lines of dialogue.  Tom Hardy only had 63 lines in "Mad Max: Fury Road."

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Actor Hiroyuki Sanada, star and producer of FX‘s limited series, "Shōgun," has closed a deal to return as "Lord Yoshii Toranaga," sources tell Deadline. Securing Sanada has been considered crucial to any plan to extend Shogun beyond its original installment.  In light of the 10-episode series' big commercial and critical success, FX is working on developing a second season.

STREAMING - From Variety:  Peacock has ordered a new version of NBC's former long-running sitcom, "The Office" (2005-13).  Greg Daniels, who developed the original series, an American version of the former BBC series, "The Office" (2001-03), is developing the new series with Michael Koman.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Olivia Wilde has signed on to join "I Want Your Sex," a film directed by Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation).

STREAMING - From Deadline:  Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch said Fox's upcoming sports streaming venture with Disney/ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery is forging ahead with over 150 engineers now on board dedicated “to building a unique and innovative product” for sports fans outside the traditional cable bundle.  Murdoch said that there have been beta tests and the service, which still doesn't have a name, is set to launch this fall (2024).

NETFLIX - From Variety:  Tyler Perry and Devon Franklin (“Flamin’ Hot,” “Miracles From Heaven”) are teaming up to produce faith-based films under a multi-year and multi-picture first-look deal at Netflix.  The films will be produced by the duo in conjunction with Tyler Perry Studios in the latest expansion of Perry’s creative partnership at Netflix.  Perry inked as a first-look film deal in October 2023 and has broadened his deal to include scripted and unscripted TV projects.  Franklin is a producer and author known for such faith-based films as "Miracles from Heaven" and "Heaven Is for Real."

From TheRoot:  Some are a little nervous about the films that will result from Tyler Perry and Devon Franklin's faith-based film deal with Netflix - most because of Perry.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Co-creator/EP/co-star Gina Yashere and EP Matt Ross talk about what went into crafting their sentimental "Bob ❤️ Abishola" finale, the show’s legacy, and whether they regret using a heart emoji in the title.

From Deadline:  Bette Midler says that she regrets being involved with her 2000-2001 CBS sitcom, "Bette." She also says that she should have sued actress Lindsay Lohan for leaving the series after the pilot episode.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Vin Diesel is returning to the role of "Richard B. Riddick," as he begins production on the fourth film in the franchise, "Riddick: Furya," on Aug. 26th, 2024.  Riddick first appear in the film "Pitch Black."

From Variety:  Lionsgate is relaunching "The Strangers" horror movie film series with a trilogy that will be released over the next nine to twelve months.  It all starts with "The Strangers: Chapter 1" on May 17th.

SCANDAL - From TheWrap:  Dwayne Johnson's "Red One" is supposed to be a big Christmas crowd pleaser for Amazon MGM Studios, but the film has reportedly become a big budget misadventure. Johnson has also been accused of unprofessional behavior such as showing up to work as much as 8 hours late and refusing to work more than four or five hours a day.

BUSINESS - From Deadline:   A Paramount Global board has determined that it will begin negotiations with Sony Pictures and Apollo, a private equity giant, about buying controlling interest in Paramount Global.  However, nepo baby David Ellison and his company, Skydance, are still in the mix to obtain that controlling interest.

From Deadline:  Nepo baby David Ellison's Skydance has been trying to buy out the controlling in Paramount Global with the assistance of his father Larry Ellison's Oracle and with the private equity entity, RedBird Capital. However, his month-long exclusive window to negotiate the deal. That may allow Sony Pictures and private equity giant, Apollo, to join the bidding.

Margolis reportedly appeared in over 50 Off-Broadway plays.

WRITERS/ACTORS STRIKE:

From Deadline:  Meeting for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. The Writers Strike will go on indefinitely.

From Deadline:  Hollywood’s superstars are answering the call from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, donating $1 million or more each to help their fellow performers during the ongoing actors and writers strikes.  Among the big donors are Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, and Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

From Variety:  International superstar, Dwayne Johnson, makes a seven-figure contribution to the "SAG-AFTRA Foundation Relief Fund." Foundation president, actor Courtney B. Vance, says the amount will remain confidential.

From THR:  TV super-producer, Ryan Murphy, in a letter from his attorney to the leadership of the Writers Guild of America, threatened litigation against Warren Leight, an East Coast strike captain and Strike Rules Compliance Committee member who has subsequently forfeited those positions.

From Deadline:  The Hollywood studios via the AMPTP has given Canadian actors a new contract, including a 5 percent raise.

From Deadline:  Writers Strike puts the spotlight back on the challenge from writers for animation productions to be covered by the WGA.

From THR:  Studios won't give writers better pay, and now, are laying off janitors.

From Deadline:  The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has reached a tentative new three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). So what does the Writers Guild (WGA), currently on strike and negotiating with the AMPTP, think of that deal.

From Deadline:  Netflix shareholders declined to support the 2023 pay packages of top executives during a non-binding vote at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Thursday.  The vote won't prevent these execs from getting their loot (an total of $166 million), but this is a rare public rebuke.  The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has urged shareholders to vote "No" because the pay was "inappropriate" at this time.

From Deadline:  Warner Bros Discovery chief David Zaslav gave the commencement address at Boston University. There he was met with jeers and also chants of "pay your writers" from picketers and from some in the audience.

From Deadline:   President Joe Biden speaks on the Writers Guild of America strike.

From Deadline:  Retaliation! The studios have starting informing writer-producers who have "overall" and "first-look" deals that such deals are being suspended.

From Deadline:  Retaliation!  Prolific HBO creator, David Simon, who is best known for "The Wire," is one of the many writers who have had their overall deals suspended the studios due to the WGA strike.  Simon has been with HBO for 25 years.

“SEAL Team” Movie Being Produced for Paramount+ in U.S.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A new NCIS will be produced for Paramount+ Australia and Network 10, and a new SEAL TEAM movie will be produced for the streaming service in the U.S., it was announced today by George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS and chief content officer for news and sports at Paramount+.

For the first time, CBS Studios will expand one of its biggest and most successful global franchises into a new international edition, NCIS: SYDNEY. The series, which is slated for 2023, will feature local stories with Aussie actors and producers and be filmed in one of the world’s most scenic harbor cities. NCIS: LOS ANGELES creator and Australian Shane Brennan is attached.

CBS will also expand the storytelling universe for the hit Paramount+ drama SEAL TEAM, producing a stand-alone movie for the streaming service. The movie will come from the series creative team of David Boreanaz, Christopher Chulack and Spencer Hudnut.

“These two projects represent two new ways we are expanding our studio footprint while supporting the company’s mission to drive streaming,” said Cheeks. “We have the producing roster, production infrastructure and deep library to be creative and nimble with franchises and other IP for both domestic and international audiences.”

Another CBS Studios IP, THE GAME, was recently reimagined as a Paramount+ Original after previous editions on The CW and BET. The modern-day examination of Black culture through the prism of pro football launched on Paramount+ in November 2021. THE GAME has been a top 10 series during its run on the service and has been renewed for a second season.

CBS also continues to expand the “Star Trek” universe for Paramount+, which is now up to five original series. This includes current and upcoming seasons of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, STAR TREK: PICARD, the animated series STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS and STAR TREK: PRODIGY, and the upcoming STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS.

Other original series currently produced by CBS Studios for Paramount+ include EVIL, THE GOOD FIGHT, WHY WOMEN KILL, and STEPHEN COLBERT’S TOONING OUT THE NEWS. Previously announced upcoming originals include PLAYERS, RABBIT HOLE, FRASIER and HAPPY FACE.

Oprah Winfrey’s extraordinary interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was the night’s top program, averaging 17.1 million viewers, while also dominating in key demos (3.6 in adults 25-54 and 2.6 in adults 18-49). This was the largest primetime audience for any entertainment special since the Academy Awards on Feb. 9, 2020.

In social media, last night’s interview drove 12 billion potential impressions. In the week leading up to the event, it drove 28.3 billion potential impressions. The special dominated the night – with the word Meghan trending within the top 10 in the U.S. for 12 hours and peaking at #1. #OprahMeghanHarry, Archie, Kate, Charles, Diana, William and Royal all trended within the top 10 last night as well.
