EDITOR:  Jeremy Milton
ORIGINAL SONGS:  Lin-Manuel Miranda

ANIMATION/FANTASY/FAMILY/DRAMA

Starring:  (voices) Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Mauro Castillo, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitan, Diane Guerrero, Wilmer Valderrama, Rhenzy Feliz, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Adassa, Maluma, Rose Portillo, Alan Tudyk, and Noemi Josefina Flores

Encanto is a 2021 computer-animated fantasy film from directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard and produced Walt Disney Animation Studios.  It is the 60th animated feature film in the “Walt Disney Animated Classics” line.  Encanto focuses on a teenage girl who must deal with being the only member of her family without magical powers even as the family's magic begins to fade.

Encanto introduces Mirabel Madrigal (Stephanie Beatriz), a teen girl who is part of the multi-generational "la familia Madrigal" (the Madrigal family).  Fifty years ago, her grandfather and grandmother, Pedro and Alma Madrigal (Maria Cecilia Botero), were forced to flee their home village in rural Columbia.  They took their infant triplets, Julieta, Pepa and Bruno, and escaped into the countryside, but their pursuers killed Pedro, but Alma had a candle that suddenly released magic and repelled the attackers.  The magic also created, “Casita,” a living or sentient house for Alma and her children.  The home is located in “Encanto,” a magical realm bordered by high mountains.  A village of newcomers now thrives under the candle's protection, shining its light from an upper room in the Madrigal home, “La Casa Madrigal.”

But all is not well.  The children and grandchildren of Abuela Alma were all granted magical gifts that each one uses to serve the villagers.  For instance, Mirabel's oldest sister, Isabela (Diane Guerrero), can make flowers grow anywhere, and her second oldest sister, Luisa (Jessica Darrow), has superhuman strength.  However, Mirabel did not receive any powers from the candle, and her Abuela Alma seems to act as if Mirabel is an obstacle in the way of the rest of the family.  Mirabel is almost as cursed as her mysterious uncle, Bruno (John Leguizamo), who disappeared years ago.  When Mirabel learns that her family members are losing their magic, she is determined to find out what is happening, although everyone else is in a state a denial about it.

I won't waste too much time telling you, dear readers, how beautiful Encanto looks.  That is standard for animated films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios.  The art direction yields beautiful sets and environments, and the costume designs results in colorful costumes that are dazzling, colorful, and imaginative.  The visual effects go off like fireworks, and it makes the magic seem … well, really magical.  Even the character design stands out, making Encanto one of the few mainstream American films set in Latin American or are Latino-themed that actually recognize that there are dark-skinned and black Latinos.  Not every Latino has light skin tones, light enough to front as white.

Encanto plays with notions of “magical realism,” a story that is realistic, but is infused with magic and the supernatural.  However, the world of Encanto barely looks realistic, as many animation films don't.  In fact, Encanto is one of the most magically-infused Disney films in years.

However, Encanto is like many Disney animated films – a coming of age film that focuses on the lead character, in this case, Mirabel.  The film's first dominant theme involves the struggle between tradition and change, the former embodied by Alma, who holds onto Madrigals' tradition of magic, and the latter by Mirabel, who clearly and correctly senses that something is wrong.  The second main theme is the conflict between family obligations and individual desires.  I think audiences will enjoy that, through Mirabel, Encanto shows that the family and the individual can work together for the benefit of everyone and each one.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's lively song score makes Encanto's narrative flow like an energetic stream, and the hit, “We Don't Talk About Bruno,” isn't the only excellent song.  Encanto stands out because it celebrates people overcoming suffering and life's trials and tribulations.  Also, one should take notice of the film's diversity and representation.  That makes Encanto stand out as special and as a place worth visiting time and again.

Box Set Celebrates 40 Years of the "Love and Rockets" Comic Book

Fantagraphics Celebrates 40 Years of Love and Rockets by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez

SEATTLE, WA—Fantagraphics is proud to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its flagship title, Love and Rockets by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez.

Debuting in 1982, Love and Rockets shattered readers’ conception of the artistic heights to which comics could aspire. Featuring audaciously intimate, complex, humane, novelistic stories, the original run of the series represents a milestone in comics history. To honor Love and Rockets’ 40th anniversary, Fantagraphics has recreated its first 50 issues (1982–1996) in a facsimile format, spread over seven hardcover volumes — packaged in an impressive slipcase set. Plus a bonus 300-page eighth volume comprising critical essays, press clippings, a cover gallery, and over 100 pages of L&R-related comics and drawings created during the period by all three Hernandez Brothers. A momentous publishing event to celebrate the greatest comics series of all time, Love and Rockets: The First Fifty: The Classic 40th Anniversary Collection is due out November 22, 2022.

Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez are still recognized as two of the greatest cartoonists in the history of the medium — award-winning, world-renowned, critically acclaimed. Their trailblazing comic series Love and Rockets has persisted to this day, as they continue to flesh out their beloved characters and build upon the rich world they have created. In celebration of Los Bros’ incredible, four-decade cartooning achievement, Fantagraphics returns to the dynamic roots of the series with a luxurious reprinting of its first 50-issues.

KCET and PBS SoCal, Southern California’s flagship PBS stations as well as the home for award-winning, original local content, are honoring the 40th anniversary of Love and Rockets by broadcasting and streaming an hour-long documentary entitled ‘Love and Rockets’: The Story Behind the Great American Comic. The documentary will air as part of KCET’s Original Artbound series and be available to stream for viewers across the country on the free PBS App in the Fall of 2022.

“Wow. 40 years of comics, 40 years with Fantagraphics,” says Jaime Hernandez. “Not a bad haul and we’re not finished!”

“When I read Gilbert and Jaime's stories in Love and Rockets for the first time their work looked to me, miraculously, like the artistic future of comics — and so it was,” explains Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth. “It has certainly been a high point of my career (and my life) to have known and published these brilliant cartoonists over the last 40 years, and I look forward to publishing them another 40. Well, OK. Maybe 30.”

“It’s 40 years of Love and Rockets with Fantagraphics and it feels like we’ve just begun,” exclaimed Gilbert Hernandez. “Here’s to 10 years more!”

Comics Review: "BLUBBER #6" - WAP: Wet Ass Pupusi

BLUBBER #6
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

CARTOONIST: Gilbert Hernandez
EDITOR: Eric Reynolds
COVER/BACK COVER: Gilbert Hernandez with Paul Baresh
24pp, B&W, $4.99 U.S. (August 2021)

Blubber is an intermittently published, black and white, alternative comic book series written and drawn by Gilbert Hernandez, cartoonist, comic book creator, and graphic novelist.  He is best known for being one-half of the duo referred to as “Los Bros.”  Gilbert and his brother, Jaime Hernandez, are Eisner Award (Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards) winners, and they have produced the seminal, alternative comic book series, Love and Rockets (Fantagraphics Books), for the last four-plus decades.

Blubber offers short stories and vignettes featuring a cast of misfits, monsters, and anthropomorphic types.  Beto also presents his usual mix of bizarre characters, strange stories, and outlandish sex and sexual acts, all hallmarks of his comic book output going back to the beginning of his early career.

Blubber #6 is comprised of multiple one-pagers and a few short stories.  It also opens with a one-page comic inside the front cover (frontispiece) and ends with another story inside the back cover.  I'll discuss each story individually, to one extent or another.

THE LOWDOWN:  The inside front cover story is entitled “Giving It a Go.”  It's about giving a device called the “Fuck-U-Later” a go.  Mila gives it a go.

That I don't find this disgusting says a lot about me.  That I kinda wish there was such a device...

“Ulu Extreme Productions Present 'Young, Fast and Scientific'”:
Pupusi's ability to take the voluminous ejaculations of Maximiliano a.k.a. “Max” during the filming of the movie, “Young, Fast and Scientific,” impresses people on the set.  So Kolchak, Wilfer, Zoe, Ulu, and John Dick (he of the three-foot+ erection) join in on the fuck-tastic fun.

As usual, Beto shows the facility of his pen in drawing exaggerated genitalia.  However, he does “stick the landing” by drawing natural looking genitalia on Page 3.

“But is it Pretty?”:
Corazon has breasts that aren't real, but feel real.  She does however have a well-endowed member that is real.  Well, Mila wants to put that member to use.

All I can say, Beto, is “Wow!”

“The Nahanny”:
Peaky, the athletic trainer who appeared in “Ulu Extreme Productions Present 'Young, Fast and Scientific',” is back in this half-page, five-panel story.”  A non-human character wants to suck on her biceps.

I like Beto's design work on the non-human character, whose name may be Kemp or “The Nahanny.”  Beto's character designing talent is probably not appreciated enough.  I can see the influence of “Silver Age” comic books on this genius in “slick” drawings.

“Kemp”:
Kemp sucks on Zoe's balloon-like breasts, with disastrous results.

This story shares the page with “The Nahanny.”  The panels are almost too small to read, but I didn't let that stop me.  And I like the characters.

“The Damn Loo!”:
Tin Man,” the robot character featured on the cover, (sexually) assaults one of Beto's signature cryptids, the “Loo.”

Once again, I am digging the design of the Loo.

“Cisnero's Secret”:
Pipusi spurns the advances of Cristobol and Efren, but she takes it up the bum from Cisnero.  Apparently, this action takes place with The Beatles 1967 pop tune, “Strawberry Fields Forever,” playing in the background.

I like that this one-pager deals with something that vex's almost all men.

“Gay Wheeler”:
Gay Wheeler is not gay … but he is willing to perform oral on Max, who says he isn't gay either.

This a cute story, but it gets better when Beto offers us Corazon' ability to bang her own boobs.

“Don't Fuck with the Loo”:
This time the Loo gets the best of Tin Man.

Untitled:
John Dick's penis is so long (and thick) that he has a … hard time finding someone to adequately pleasure him and it.  Luckily, Cisnero comes along and tries to offer John a “soothing blowjob.”

It's funny that John says he is not gay, so what Cisnero is doing to him must be a dream.  But it is a dream he hopes to have over and over again.  Soothing blowjob … I hear ya talkin,' girl.

“The Thighs Have It!”:
Efren takes advantage of Kolchak's thighs, among other sexual delights.  Cisnero and “Strawberry Fields Forever” guest star.

All I can say about this one-page is that the thighs do indeed have it.  This story also shows off Beto's talent at cartooning the human figure.

“The Fruit of His Loins”:
The story focuses on a young man who is referred to as “Our Man,” but his name may be “Norte.”

This story, about narcissism and sexual hang-ups, showcases Beto's skill at cartooning exaggerated body parts...

“Plunk”:
More porno adventures at “Ulu Extreme Productions,” this time without the cameras.

“Clipper”:
Still more porno adventures at Ulu.

“Plunk” and “Clipper” are indeed true pornographic comics.  That's a good thing, and they're kinda nice.

“Dr. Sanz Was What?”:
Dr. Sanz wants to create a stimulant for penis augmentation.  After inventing a formula, he tries it on himself.  A dream shows him the possibilities of having an augmented member … the bad … and the good.

Beto's drawings of Dr. Sanz's face recalls the similarity of his graphical style to the late writer-artist Darwyn Cooke's.  The two collaborated on the odd miniseries, "The Twilight Children" (DC/Vertigo, 2016), and “Dr. Sanz Was What?” makes me think that they did share some aesthetics.

“Wilfer's Way”:
Wilfred likes to bang breasts and finds all other sexual acts to be nonsense.  But what if Pupusi could come up with something that was like fun-bag-fun, but not exactly it?

This one pager may be the best story this issue.

“Tamba”:
Peaky is enjoying sex with men, but is she ready for sex with cryptids?

What would Blubber be without multiple sex-with-cryptids stories?

“Fuck the Loo”:
Tin Man and Snowman the cryptid wreck the Loo.

A funny story, especially because we learn that the Loo is a Republican.

“Zoe Loves Her Work!”:
Zoe loves her work – having sex.  Cisnero, Mila, and Efren do, too!

What can I say about this story.  I love reviewing comic books when it lets me read stories like this.

“Submitted for Your Disapproval”:
Baby meets Corazon … in a way.

I can love this story because Baby is in it.

The inside the back cover story is “Secret Sex.”  This story takes place partially in Efren's past and is about a woman he banged 35 years ago.  This is a lovingly drawn 20-panel one-page story.  I'd like to have the original art for it.

After reading any issue of Blubber, I think that Gilbert Hernandez is the only modern cartoonist doing true modern underground comics.  Blubber recalls the classic erotic/porn comics of R. Crumb, but Hernandez's work is more purely surreal.  I treasure Blubber #6, as I do every issue, because I see it as a gift from the rebellious spirit of a master of alternative comics.  Plus, my mind played “Strawberry Fields Forever” throughout the entire issue.

Blubber is the product of a master who just draws whatever the heck he wants to draw.  He submits it for your disapproval, and probably wants you to disapprove, dear readers.  But I won't, King Gilbert.  I'll always approve.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Gilbert Hernandez must have Blubber.

A+

Comics Review: "BLUBBER #5": Screwing Your Way to a 2-Day Pass

BLUBBER #5
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

CARTOONIST: Gilbert Hernandez
EDITOR: Eric Reynolds
COVER/BACK COVER: Gilbert Hernandez with Paul Baresh
24pp, B&W, $4.99 U.S. (January 2019)

Gilbert Hernandez is the cartoonist, comic book creator, and graphic novelist best known for being one-half of the duo referred to as “Los Bros.”  Gilbert and his brother, Jaime Hernandez, are Eisner Award (Will Eisner Comics Industry Awards) winners, and they have produced the seminal, alternative comic book series, Love and Rockets (Fantagraphics Books), for the last four decades.

As a “solo act,” Gilbert (a.k.a. “Beto”) has also produced numerous original graphic novels and several comic book miniseries for publishers like Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, and Drawn & Quarterly, as well as for his original publisher, Fantagraphics.  In 2015, Fantagraphics launched Beto's comic book series, Blubber.

This black and white comic book series offers short stories and vignettes featuring a cast of misfits, monsters, and anthropomorphic types.  Beto also presents his usual mix of bizarre characters, strange stories, and outlandish sex and sexual acts, all hallmarks of his comic book output going back to the beginning of his early work.

Blubber #5 (which was released in 2019) is comprised of seven stories of one or two pages in length and three stories that are three pages and longer.  It also opens with the one-page comic inside the front cover (frontispiece) and ends with another story inside the back cover.  I'll discuss each story individually, to one extent or another.

THE LOWDOWN:  The inside the front cover story is entitled “Atom Baby Crunchers.”  It is about guys with balloon-like musculature, who are also well endowed in the penis department.  The one thing I like about this story is that everyone receives sexual pleasure, one way or another.

“Corazon”:
The first interior story stars a young character who appears to be female, has large breasts, and a penis (well-endowed) and a scrotum.  Corazon is always naked, even at work, where this story is set.  Corazon and a co-worker, Gronsky, must find their boss' old ink pens, which are missing, because he hates the new ones.  A co-worker, Cristobol, joins them.  The search involves dreams, remote viewing, water, a cult, and, of course, masturbation.  “Corazon” is one of Beto's usual surreal gems, which I generally enjoy, but I like this one especially because Beto isn't afraid to depict one guy sucking another guy's penis.

“Der Nimmy”:
Is this one-pager technically a furry story? Well, it involves sex and a human in a costume that resembles a large furry creature.  There is apparently also an appearance by Corazon.  No, honey.  Ain't nobody mad.

“Maximiliano's Huge Fuckin' Choad”:
This one-pager is about a guy, Maximiliano, with a long schlong who only enjoys satisfactory sex in a particular way.  Maximiliano also likes to have sex with “cryptids,” including the one that is featured on the cover of Blubber #5.  The fact that his story featured a form of coercive sex made me a little uncomfortable … but I got over it because it's Beto.

“Shitter”:
This two-pager features an office worker who enjoys clubbing, necrophilia, and coprophilia.  I like that Beto draws the gentleman's pubes as being neatly trimmed.

“It's Better to Die”:
In this six-page story, Corazon and two other balloon-breasted women travel through a land of faerie creatures such as fauns, kekeppy, and doogs.  They screw them and are screwed by them.  In this story, Beto shows off his incredible touch with figure drawing – human females and otherwise – and also his precise inking.  I don't know if he uses a brush to ink his art, but whatever he uses, he shows incredible dexterity with it.  “Tiki,” a diminutive, balloon-breasted woman, appears in this story.

“This Man, This Monster!”/”The Good Life”:
The cryptid featured on the cover appears in this story.  Blubber #5 has as a recurring plot element which indicates that having sex with a cryptid will earn someone a “2-way pass,” allowing them to travel between this world and the “Other Realm.”  “This Man, This Monster!” is a one-page comic that shares the page with a five-panel comic strip at the bottom of the page, entitled “The Good Life.”

“Tiki's Delivery Service”:
This two-page story features Tiki, the short of stature slash balloon of breasts woman.  She and Juevencio (who first appears in “Atom Baby Crunchers,” the story on the inside front cover) visit a place where men with low self-esteem are paid to allow others to alter, abuse, and use their penises.  Once again, Beto impresses with his ability to cartoon the penis – human and otherwise – in a variety of shapes, sizes, and lengths.

“See What You Made Me Do?”:
A woman named “Kolchak,” who has thick, muscular thighs has sex with a cryptid, hoping to earn herself a “2-way pass.”  However, taking it from a cryptid compels her to tell a secret – about a former boyfriend who was a serial killer.  Beto throws in a surprise with this story that makes the three-page “See What You Made Me Do?” rather delightful.

“Pupusi's Butthole”/Pupusi and Her Belly-Swelling Fetish”:
This is actually the title of a TV show that stars a Beto regular, Pupusi, who has appeared in a number of Beto's other works.  Beto introduces a new fetish, the love of “belly-swelling.”  The one-page comic shares its space with a five-panel strip at the bottom of the page, entitled “Pupusi and Her Belly-Swelling Fetish.”

“The Janx and the Ingrate”:
First, we get two more four-panel comic strips about Pupusi's fetish.  Then, it's on to the one-page comic that shares the space.  In “The Janx and the Ingrate,” we learn that the cryptid featured on the cover of Blubber #5 is called “The Janx.”  This creature has a foot fetish, and it has a surprise for the ingrate who does not appreciate the pleasure it gives.

“John Dick”:
This inside the back cover, one-page comic features a guy named “John Dick.”  John appears in the inside front cover story, “Atom Baby Crunchers” and also in “Maximiliano's Huge Fuckin' Choad,” but those are only cameos.

He is the star of the show in “John Dick,” in which he shows off his erect penis, which is somewhere between two to three-feet long.  “John Dick” asks the question: what do you do when your erect cock is so long and large that no human orifice can service it?  Is the answer to suck it yourself?

Right now, Gilbert Hernandez seems to be the only cartoonist doing true modern Underground Comics.  Blubber recalls the classic erotic/porn comics of R. Crumb, but Hernandez's work is more purely surreal.  I treasure Blubber #5, as I do every issue, because I see it as a gift from the rebellious spirit of a master of alternative comics.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Gilbert Hernandez must have Blubber.

This year's Song Of The Year category comprises a diverse group of songwriters that reflect the diversity of Latin music and its worldwide power, which transcends language and country of origin. Latin music has gained global popularity. Not only is the Latin community one of the largest and fastest-growing demographic groups in the U.S., but its music is more popular than ever.

In addition, this year's Best New Artist category, which includes Giulia Be, María Becerra, Bizarrap, Boza, Zoe Gotusso, Humbe, Rita Indiana, Lasso, Paloma Mami, Marco Mares and Juliana Velásquez, features an incredible slate of nominees. All songs that are considered for nominations must contain a minimum percentage of lyric content in Spanish or Portuguese that ranges from 51% to 75%, depending on the category. The only exceptions are for Best New Artist, where artists and groups are not eligible if they have established their public identity in a language other than Spanish or Portuguese, and Best Classical Contemporary Composition, where the work must have been composed by an Ibero-American.

The Latin Academy's online entry process allowed members and record labels to submit entries digitally during the COVID-19 pandemic and paved the way for a very successful virtual screening and nominating process that enabled the participation of a large majority of voting members, regardless of their location. The final round of voting to determine Latin GRAMMY winners will begin on October 8.

The Latin Academy is celebrating the 22nd Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on November 18, 2021. The safety of guests, nominees and performers is the most urgent priority. Comics Review: "HELM GREYCASTLE #1" Introduces a Mind-Blowing Cast of Characters

HELM GREYCASTLE #1 (OF 4)

COLORS: Bryan Valenza
LETTERS: Gabriela Downie
SCRIPT ASSIST: Claire Napier
EDITORS: Clair Napier; Elena Salcedo

Rated “T+/Teen Plus”

Helm Greycastle created by Henry Barajas and Bryan Valenza

Chapter One: Devotion & Desire

Helm Greycastle is a new comic book miniseries from writer Henry Barajas and artists Rahmat M. Handoko and Bryan Valenza.  Published by Image Comics, this Latinx, alternate reality fantasy series mixes magic and dragons with Aztec mythology.

Helm Greycastle #1 (Devotion & Desire) finds Helm Greycastle and his band: Vola the fighter, Oskar Frostbeard the dwarf, and Shava Nailo the elven bard, fighting skeleton warriors to obtain a special item for their magic-using ally, Enxina Holimion.  She has a bigger task for Greycastle and company, however; she needs them to recover Uadjit, the Last Dragon Prince!

Who has him?  The abductors are from a new and previously unknown threat, Aztec Mexica.  Little does Greycastle know that there is already a resistance brewing against Aztec Mexica's leader, Montezuma III.

THE LOWDOWN:  The cover art for Helm Greycastle doesn't really convey how offbeat this new series is.  A blend of Tolkien-inspired epic and quest fantasy, role playing games, and Aztec mythology, Helm Greycastle promises to be something different.

The art team of penciller Rahmat M. Handoko and colorist Bryan Valenza is perfect in that it captures the disparate mythologies and mythopoeia of this concept.  In that way, the art and graphical storytelling suggest that it is perfectly acceptable for all of them to play on the same of field of narrative conflict.

Writer Henry Barajas may surprise some readers with how much Helm Greycastle seems like a Conan the Barbarian comic book.  Over the past five decades, many of the comic books starring Robert E. Howard's character, Conan the Cimmerian, have blended versions of real-world mythologies and pantheons of gods with the assorted pantheons of Conan's mythology.  Helm Greycastle seems firmly rooted in the sword and sorcery that inspired role playing games, and that's a good thing.  The cast of characters is quite impressive; no one is like the other.  By conception and by motivation, each is an intriguing player on the stage that is Helm Greycastle.

So I think readers will find something familiar in Helm Greycastle, while being intrigued by what makes it different.  This first issue also includes a one-shot Latinx RPG (5E compatible).  How's that for different?  I'm not interested in the RPG, but Barajas and company present a first chapter that suggests Helm Greycastle will, from page to page, offer the familiar and the different, but the reading experience will be one of harmony.  I recommend the adventurous readers give Helm Greycastle a try.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of fantasy comic book series that recall role playing games will want to try Helm Greycastle.

[This comic book includes the game, “Sacred Armor,” by Tristan J. Tarwater, with art and editing by Jen Vaughn.]

Sofia Maldonado Named Official Fine Artist for the 2020 Latin Grammy Awards

The Latin Recording Academy® Names Sofia Maldonado Official Artist for the 21st Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards®

MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Latin Recording Academy® has announced that Puerto Rican fine artist Sofia Maldonado has been selected as the official artist of the 21st Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards®. Maldonado's work will be featured prominently on collateral materials before and during the 21st Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, which will broadcast live on Univision on Nov. 19, 2020 from 8–11 p.m. ET/PT (7 p.m. Central).

“Maldonado's art is powerful and full of effervescent colors reminiscent of Puerto Rico, the island where she was born. Her art recognizes resilience amid moments of despair while also celebrating and empowering Latin communities”

"Maldonado's art is powerful and full of effervescent colors reminiscent of Puerto Rico, the island where she was born. Her art recognizes resilience amid moments of despair while also celebrating and empowering Latin communities," said Gabriel Abaroa Jr., President/CEO of The Latin Recording Academy. "Together, these components reflect the elements of Latin music that unite us all during joyful but also difficult moments."

In the artwork created especially for the 21st Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards, Maldonado portrays through vibrant colors the importance of enjoying life even during challenging times. Adjusting to an even more virtual world, the official artwork will be rendered mainly, digitally. Inclusive of the iconic gramophone symbolizing excellence in music, this year's artwork also includes an outline of a tropical tree — a yagrumo, which symbolizes rebirth. The yagrumo is native to Puerto Rico and after a hurricane is the first tree to reemerge. Additionally, in Puerto Rico, the yagrumo is used to create music instruments such as the tiple and cuatro puertorriqueño, a traditional string instrument smaller than a guitar but larger than a mandolin.

An acclaimed painter and muralist from Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, Maldonado graduated from the Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, New York and the San Juan School of Visual Arts. She has shown her work in individual and collective exhibits in galleries, museums and public spaces in all over the world, including top specific locations such as Whitney Biennial, the Museum of Latin American Art, as well as Scope and Art Miami. Maldonado's characteristic style is recognizable for its Caribbean palette and roots in muralism (or muralist art). She deconstructs organic forms in order to explore color fields in her work.

"It is an honor to be the first Puerto Rican artist to collaborate with such an iconic organization and award show, especially during a time when we need to empower and bring joy to our communities. My art has always been in conversation with my context and during the past few months, living in the pandemic and seeing the resilience of our Latino community, inspired the creation of this piece and will continue to inspire my work in the future," said Maldonado.

ABOUT SOFIA MALDONADO:
Sofía Maldonado-Suárez is a Puerto Rican artist of Cuban descent. She has dedicated her career to transforming derelict spaces, constructing a poetic experience of colorful abstractions, within uninhabited buildings. Maldonado's urban walkabouts inspired a desire to use color to impact the environment and engage the community through workshops and versatile community engagement initiatives. The artist also has a dynamic studio practice as a painter and digital illustrator. Collaborations with musicians and underground subcultures are an integral part of her artistic practice and aesthetic. She represents feminine energy in her expressive outlines and sensually themed drawings that challenge cultural myths and social constructs. Throughout her career, Maldonado’s illustrations of femininity have been defiant and present the pleasure associated with the female experience in detail. Maldonado has earned a BFA from the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño de Puerto Rico and an MFA from Pratt Institute, in Brooklyn, New York.

PARAMOUNT PLAYERS’ DORA THE EXPLORER FEATURE FILM COMMENCES PRODUCTION IN AUSTRALIA

This First Live-Action Adaptation of the Nickelodeon Franchise Stars Isabela

Moner and Eugenio Derbez with Muppets Director James Bobin at the Helm

Gold Coast, Australia — Paramount Players announced today that the motion picture adaptation of Nickelodeon’s Peabody Award-winning children’s animated series, Dora the Explorer, began principal photography on location in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, on Monday, August 6, 2018. The production, being directed by 11-time Emmy and four-time BAFTA nominee James Bobin (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, “Flight of the Conchords”) marks the lovable Latina character’s big screen debut (and first live-action adaptation on any platform) after fourteen seasons (2000-2014) and 172 episodes on Viacom’s enduring children’s cable network. The film is a Paramount Players and Nickelodeon production in association with Walden Media. The film is being supported by the Queensland Government via Screenland Queensland. Paramount will release the film on August 2, 2019.

Dora the Explorer stars Isabela Moner (Transformers: The Last Knight, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Instant Family) in the film’s title role. Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents nothing could prepare Dora for the most dangerous adventure ever – High School. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego, and a rag tag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost Inca civilization.

Seventeen-year-old actress Moner is joined in the film by one of Mexico’s biggest stars, Eugenio Derbez (Overboard, Instructions Not Included, How to Be A Latin Lover), who plays Alejandro, a mysterious jungle inhabitant who tries to protect the teenagers from the marauders. The film also features big screen newcomer Micke Moreno (Escobar: Paradise Lost), in the role of cousin Diego; Nicholas Coombe (“Spy Kids: Mission Control,” Midnight Sun) as Randy, a fellow high schooler who develops an immediate crush on Dora; Madeleine Madden (Picnic at Hanging Rock,” “Tidelands”) as the school’s snooty class president, Sammy; and Academy Award® nominee Adriana Barraza (Babel, Amores Perros, Thor, The 33) as Dora’s grandma, Abuelita Valerie. Temuera Morrison (Green Lantern, Moana) will play the role of Powell. Additional key casting announcements are forthcoming.

The film is produced by Christopher Robin producer Kristin Burr, who is joined by longtime Bobin associate, executive producer John G. Scotti (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, Alice Through the Looking Glass) as well as executive producers Julia Pistor (The Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events) and Eugenio Derbez.

Bobin has assembled a talented team behind the camera that also includes reunions with Oscar®-winning production designer Dan Hennah (Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Alice Through the Looking Glass) and costume designer Rahel Afiley (The Muppets, Muppets Most Wanted, “Flight of the Conchords”). The pair will be joined by six-time Goya Award winning (and BAFTA nominated) cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, A.S.C. (Secretos del corazón, The Others, Blue Jasmine, Thor: Ragnarok), film editor Mark Everson (Paddington, Paddington 2) and BAFTA-nominated VFX supervisor Andy Brown (Black Panther, House of Flying Daggers, Moulin Rouge!)

Dora the Explorer will film entirely in Australia’s Gold Coast, in the state of Queensland on the continent’s east coast south of Brisbane. Village Roadshow Studios, where the production will headquarter, has been host to several major Hollywood movies in the last few years, including The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Shallows, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok and, most recently, DC’s Aquaman. In addition to designer Hennah’s stage builds, the production will utilize Queensland’s diverse landscape, notably tropical forests near Tamborine Mountain and Tallebudgera, to portray Dora’s jungle habitat.

Paramount Pictures is a subsidiary of Viacom. Nickelodeon is part of the Viacom Media Network, also a division of Viacom.
