ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  NBC has passed on a third season of its sitcom, "American Auto."

MOVIES - From Deadline Martyn Ford is among four new cast members added to New Line's "Mortal Kombat 2."

SCANDAL - From THR:  Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey says that if he is found "not guilty" in his U.K. sexual assault trial people are ready to hire him again.  He is set to appear in court June 16th and he is facing four counts of sexual assault against three men.

DISNEY - From Deadline: Director and Oscar-winning screenwriter, Sarah Polley, is in early talks to direct a live-action version of Disney's legendary animated feature film, "Bambi."

DISNEY - From VarietyDisney has shaken up its release date schedules, announcing delays and date changes for its Marvel Studios and "Avatar" films, with the final Avatar film, "Avatar 5," not arriving until 2031.

POLITICS - From TheAP:  Billionaire investor turned philanthropist George Soros is ceding control of his $25 billion empire to a younger son, Alexander "Alex" Soros.  Soros, who is Jewish, is frequently the target of right wing conspiracies because his donations to human rights causes and to organizations promoting democracy around the world.  The 37-year-old Alex plans to continues his father's work, but be "more policital" and also to broaden his father's "liberal aims" to include issues such as voting rights and abortion rights.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineFox News has sent a "cease and desist" letter to its former property, Tucker Carlson."  Although Fox fired him, he is still under contract through the end of 2024, and they don't want him doing a show on Twitter.  He has already completed at least two episodes of his "Tucker on Twitter" show.

TONY AWARDS - From Deadline:   The winners at the 2023 / 76th annual Tony Awards have been announced.  "Kimberly Akimbo" was the big winner, taking five awards, including "Best Musical" and "Lead Actress" for Victoria Clark.  "Leopoldstadt" won four Tonys, including "Best Play."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 6/9 to 6/11/2023 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" with an estimated take of 60.5 million dollars.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Actor Kelsey Grammar explains his choice of a British co-star, actor Nicholas Lyndhurst, for his reboot of his long-running, Emmy-winning NBC TV series, "Frasier."  The series is set for Paramount+ later this year.

MOVIES - From Variety:  In a new documentary about his career, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger says that he was embarrassed by the flop that was his 1993 action-fantasy-comedy film, "The Last Action Hero." In a phone call, his friend, director James Cameron, said Arnold sounded like he wanted to cry over the film's reception.

MUSIC/LGBTQ+ - From Deadline:  Grammy Award-winning country music legend, Garth Brooks, says that he will serve all beers, including "Bud Light," which is the subject of backlash and boycotts, at his new Nashville bar, "Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk."  Brooks says the bar will be welcoming to everyone and will be a safe space.

ANIMATION - From BloodyDisgustingEli Roth and author James Frey are teaming up with DreamWorks Animation on a new 2D animated series for "older teens" entitled "Fright Krewe."  Still early in development, the series will focus on a group of misfits teens in charge of saving New Orleans from a great demonic threat.  The first season of 10 episodes will debut on Hulu and Peacock.

OBITS:

From WashPost:  Former U.S. military analyst and American political activist and whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, has died at the age of 92, Friday, June 16, 2023.  Ellsberg is best known for leaking the "Pentagon Papers," a top-secret study and history commissioned by the U.S. Pentagon and concerning the U.S. government's decision-making in relation to the Vietnam War. He leaked the study first to "The New York Times" and then, to "The Washington Post."  Ellsberg's activities were the subject on the Oscar-nominated documentary film, "The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers," which also won a Peabody Award.  Ellsberg also appears in the 1974 Oscar-winning documentary film, "Hearts and Minds."

From Deadline:  English actress and politician, Glenda Jackson, has died at the age of 87, Thursday, June 15, 2023.  Jackson won two "Best Actress" Oscars, for "Women in Love" (1969) and "A Touch of Class" (1973), and was nominated twice more.  She also won two Primetime Emmy Awards and one Tony Award.  Jackson was also a member of the British Parliament from 1992 to 2015 as a member of the Labour Party.

From Variety:  American author, Cormac McCarthy, has died at the age of 89, Tuesday, June 13, 2023.  He is best known for his novels, "All the Pretty Horses" (1992), "No Country for Old Me," (2005), and "The Road" (2006), all of which were adapted into film.  The 2007 film adaptation of "No Country for Old Me" won four Academy Awards," including "Best Picture."  "The Road" won the 2007 "Pulitzer Prize for Fiction."

From Variety:  Stage, film, and television actor, Treat Williams, has died at the age of 71, Monday, June 12, 2023. Williams died as the result of motor vehicle accident near Dorset, Vermont.  Williams is best known for his roles in such films as the musical, "Hair" (1979), Steven Spielberg's WWII comedy, "1941" (1979), "Prince of the City" (1981), and the cult film, "Deep Rising" (1998), to name a few.  He played the lead road in The WB drama, "Everwood" (2002-06).  He received a Primetime Emmy nominations for his work in the 1996 TV movie, "The Late Shift" (HBO).

From Deadline:  The family of actor the late actor Treat Williams has released a statement regarding his passing.  Williams died Monday evening (Mon., June 12th) when a car hit the motorcycle he was riding.

WRITERS STRIKE:

From THR:  Studios won't give writers better pay, and now, are laying off janitors.

From Deadline:  The Directors Guild of America (DGA) has reached a tentative new three-year deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). So what does the Writers Guild (WGA), currently on strike and negotiating with the AMPTP, think of that deal.

From Deadline:  Netflix shareholders declined to support the 2023 pay packages of top executives during a non-binding vote at the company’s annual shareholder meeting on Thursday.  The vote won't prevent these execs from getting their loot (an total of $166 million), but this is a rare public rebuke.  The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has urged shareholders to vote "No" because the pay was "inappropriate" at this time.

From Deadline:  Warner Bros Discovery chief David Zaslav gave the commencement address at Boston University. There he was met with jeers and also chants of "pay your writers" from picketers and from some in the audience.

From Deadline:   President Joe Biden speaks on the Writers Guild of America strike.

From Deadline:  Retaliation! The studios have starting informing writer-producers who have "overall" and "first-look" deals that such deals are being suspended.

From Deadline:  Retaliation!  Prolific HBO creator, David Simon, who is best known for "The Wire," is one of the many writers who have had their overall deals suspended the studios due to the WGA strike.  Simon has been with HBO for 25 years.

From Deadline:  The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is on strike.

From Deadline:  Disney, HBO/HBO Max, and CBS have sent letters to showrunners (the TV equivalent of film directors) instructing them to return to work, inspite of the writer's strike.

Review: Riveting "WOMEN TALKING" is a Film That Speaks Directly, Even to Us

Women Talking is a 2022 drama film from writer-director Sarah Polley. The film is based on Miriam Towes' 2018 Canadian novel, Women Talking.  Both the film and the novel are inspired by real-life events.  Women Talking the film focuses on a group of women who must decide if they should do nothing, stay and fight, or leave their isolated religious community where sexual abuse of girls and women is common.

Women Talking opens in the year 2010 in an unnamed, isolated Mennonite colony.  The colony's women and girls have discovered that some of the men in the colony have been using livestock tranquilizer to subdue them in order to rape them.  Although other men in the colony have had these attackers arrested and imprisoned in a nearby city, they are also seeking bail for the attackers.

The men have left the women by themselves for two days in order for the women to determine what they will do going forward.  However, the men expect the women to forgive their attackers or be expelled from the colony.  The women gather in a barn to discuss and to vote.  They have a young man named August (Ben Whishaw) sit in the meeting in order to take the minutes.  When he was a boy, Ben's mother was expelled from the colony.  Ben returned to become the colony's sole teacher, but he only teaches the boys because women are not allowed to attend school.

Elders like Agata (Judith Ivey) and Greta (Sheila McCarthy) lead the discussion, but young women like Ona (Rooney Mara), Salome (Claire Foy), Mariche (Jessie Buckley), and Mejal (Michelle McLeod) have strong opinions.  Should the women do nothing... forgive... stay and fight... or leave the colony?  As they grapple with the brutal reality of their faith, the time to decide is running out.

Almost four days out from watching Women Talking, and I find myself still thinking about it, dear readers.  In the wake of the of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, it feels like a supernaturally timely film.  The “Dobbs decision” held that the Constitution of the United States did not confer a right to abortion.  It is just the latest in a more than three-decade assault on women's rights to reproductive freedom and choice.

Women Talking effectively delivers a valuable message.  The women of the Mennonite colony that this film depicts must confront not only the violence against them, but also a religion designed down to its bones to give men all the power over women.  Their faith essentially renders women and girls indentured servants and non-citizens.

I quibble that writer-director Sarah Polley's direction and Oscar-winning screenplay bury the actresses of Women Talking beneath the scenario and story.  There is a lot of genuine talent here, and I wanted to see more of them, in a broader sense, although no one can really keep Rooney Mara from shining.  In a way, however, that is good thing.  The way Polley presents this makes Women Talking as timeless as it is timely.

Women Talking is truly an exceptional and spectacular film because the women at the heart of its story are talking.  What they say crosses over into our real world.  Because what is depicted in this film is real, it matters.  Women Talking is based on something that happened not that long ago, in this century, so women struggling for equality and human rights must keep talking.  And this movie, Women Talking, is entertainment, educational, and hopefully, inspiration for future generations.

35th Annual Scripter Awards Honor Film "Women Talking" and Apple TV+'s "Slow Horses"

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The writers behind the film “Women Talking” and the series “Slow Horses” received the 35th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards at USC’s Doheny Memorial Library.

“You remained engaged, committed, and invested during a time of uncertainty and change, and I thank you for staying so connected to our libraries.”

The Scripter Awards recognize the year’s most accomplished adaptations of the written word for the big screen and episodic series.

Glenn Sonnenberg, who co-founded the Scripter Awards in 1988 with Marjorie Lord Volk, served as master of ceremonies. In his opening remarks, Sonnenberg acknowledged that this was the first year the Scripters were presented in person since January 2020, shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic upended normal life.

“I’m grateful for the support of the Scripter community, particularly since 2020,” Sonnenberg said. “You remained engaged, committed, and invested during a time of uncertainty and change, and I thank you for staying so connected to our libraries.”

In the episodic series category, novelist Mick Herron and screenwriter Will Smith took home Scripters for the episode “Failure’s Contagious,” from the Apple TV+ series “Slow Horses,” which Smith adapted from Herron’s book of the same name.

“It’s an absolute privilege to be on the short list tonight,” Mick Herron said, “these are some of the best books you’ll ever read, made into some of the best TV you’ll ever see.”

“The only real test for me in fiction is do I believe it,” Will Smith said, “I love it when I read a book and feel the characters have a life before and after, and I always feel that with Mick’s writing.”

In the film category, the winners were screenwriter Sarah Polley and novelist Miriam Toews for “Women Talking.”

“There’s not another person, another writer, another filmmaker, that I would entrust my book to other than Sarah Polley,” Toews said.

Sarah Polley described Toews’s work as “searing, uncompromising, funny, and wise,” commenting that “with this book she offered the world an offramp from grief and rage toward what true democracy might look like.”

Earlier in the evening, longtime USC Libraries Board of Councilors member Jim Childs received the Ex Libris Award, which honored his exceptional commitment to the libraries.

In-kind donors included Andrew Murray Vineyards, Bloomsbury Publishing and Penguin Random House.

30th Annual USC Libraries Scripter Award Nominees Announced

USC Libraries Name Finalists for 30th-Annual Scripter Awards

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The USC Libraries have named the finalists for the 30th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award. In this particularly competitive year, voting resulted in ties for the film and television categories.

    USC Libraries release finalists for the 30th-annual Scripter Awards, honoring the best adapted film and TV show.

Due to a three-way tie in the nomination round, the writers of seven films and the works on which the films are based will compete for the honors this year. The finalist writers for film adaptation are, in alphabetical order by film title:

Blue is the Warmest Color: I went in knowing almost nothing except general buzz but I hated the sex scenes which were way too long and midway thru I couldn’t wait to flee the theater. Coming out I read how many takes Kechiche required and I was thoroughly repulsed. Who was this for? Then I read the graphic novel and discovered that critical plot points were deleted. Like the fact that Adele’s parents find her in bed with Emma which is why she has to move out — and I was enraged. A three hour movie, and Kechiche is so busy salivating over his actresses that he can’t bother telling a coherent story. Hype for this film makes me nauseous!

Blue is the Warmest Color: It's so obvious a dude with a fetish directed this, it's not only unappealing, it's creepy. His overcompensating hubris isn't worth the praise this is receiving.

The Canyons: Women depicted as powerless and manipulative. Plus, the acting is horrid.

Captain Phillips: The whole might of the USA coming down on 3 starving Somalis?! Repulsive. When the obscenely beefy SEALS arrived and the audience started to cheer, I felt I was watching a “macho” director brainwash audience members into blindly accepting the worst stereotypes of jingoistic male behavior.

Dallas Buyers Club: Shame on Dallas Buyers Club for completely ignoring the LGBT as a group who drove the fight against AIDS to the forefront. The only time gays were mentioned was to let Matthew McConaughey's homophobic redneck character get a laugh at the expense of Jared Leto's transsexual character. The film made it seem as if the whole AIDS community stood on the shoulders of Ron Woodruff when in fact, groups like Act Up were starting the war for proper testing and more drugs way before Ron entered into the picture. It completely demeaned the backdrop Dallas Buyers Club was utilizing for their own characterizing "hero" agenda. Also the film took an extreme opinion against the AZT drug in favor for a plot line when in fact it was helping some patients. The only saving grace was Jared Leto's fantastic performance but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

Enough Already: Why is it that when actresses and even screen goddesses hit a certain age, they're all cast as nags, loons and shrews. No matter how accomplished any of these films may be, the tally of older actress shrewish nags on board is really high this year, as usual. Including Oprah Winfrey in The Butler, Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in August: Osage County, Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine, June Squibb in Nebraska, Kristin Scott Thomas in Only God Forgives, and Julianne Moore in Carrie. Refreshing exceptions being Judi Dench in Philomena, Yolonda Ross in Go For Sisters, and Mary Steenburgen in Last Vegas.

Gravity: The women in this group make meaningful choices each year so they speak for me in these areas, the lone exception being Sandra Bullock's performance in Gravity. She's a fine actress, but I found the character to be whiny, cowardly, and full of the wrong stuff - a damsel in distress who needed a man (even if it was just her imagination) to pull her out of danger. I can hardly believe they'd send someone so panicky into space. Give me Sigourney Weaver any day.

Les Salauds [Bastards]: All of the women in this film are depicted as complicit in their own oppression and exploitation. Though it’s a patriarchal system that they exist within, they refuse to fight for themselves or each other, even when a minor is involved. The indictment then is not of the men but of the women. I found this problematic and disappointing from Denis.

Spring Breakers: No depth, little plot and a pitiful depiction of today's college kids. Gratuitous in nothing more than flesh and violence. A grossly and dangerously skewed depiction of young women and their values in today's America.

*ADRIENNE SHELLY AWARD: Adrienne Shelly was a promising actress and filmmaker who was brutally strangled in her apartment in 2006 at the age of forty by a construction worker in the building, after she complained about noise. Her killer tried to cover up his crime by hanging her from a shower rack in her bathroom, to make it look like a suicide. He later confessed that he was having a “bad day.” Shelly, who left behind a baby daughter, had just completed her film Waitress, which she also starred in, and which was honored at Sundance after her death.

*JOSEPHINE BAKER AWARD: The daughter of a laundress and a musician, Baker overcame being born black, female and poor, and marriage at age fifteen, to become an internationally acclaimed legendary performer, starring in the films Princess Tam Tam, Moulin Rouge and Zou Zou. She also survived the race riots in East St. Louis, Illinois as a child, and later expatriated to France to escape US racism. After participating heroically in the underground French Resistance during WWII, Baker returned to the US where she was a crusader for racial equality. Her activism led to attacks against her by reporter Walter Winchell who denounced her as a communist, leading her to wage a battle against him. Baker was instrumental in ending segregation in many theaters and clubs, where she refused to perform unless integration was implemented.

*KAREN MORLEY AWARD: Karen Morley was a promising Hollywood star in the 1930s, in such films as Mata Hari and Our Daily Bread. She was driven out of Hollywood for her leftist political convictions by the Blacklist and for refusing to testify against other actors, while Robert Taylor and Sterling Hayden were informants against her. And also for daring to have a child and become a mother, unacceptable for female stars in those days. Morley maintained her militant political activism for the rest of her life, running for Lieutenant Governor on the American Labor Party ticket in 1954. She passed away in 2003, unrepentant to the end, at the age of 93.

Women Dominate 2014 DGA Awards Documentary Nominations

The Directors Guild of America recently announced the nominations in the category of "DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentaries for 2013."  Three of the five nominations went to women filmmakers, including Sarah Polley for her much-honored 2012 Canadian doc, Stories We Tell.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) is the entertainment labor union that represents film and television directors.  The DGA gives out the Directors Guild of America Award each year to honor outstanding achievement.

The 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles

Review: "The Weight of Water" is a Heavy Drama (Happy B'day, Sarah Polley)

DRAMA/MYSTERY with elements of a thriller

The subject of this movie review is The Weight of Water, a 2000 drama and mystery film from director Kathryn Bigelow.  The film made its debut in 2000, but did not receive a U.S. release until November 2002.  The film is based on the 1997 novel, The Weight of Water, by author Anita Shreve.  The novel, which is historical fiction, is based in part on a real-life 19th century American murder case.  The Weight of Water the movie focuses on a newspaper photographer who is researching the lurid and sensational axe murder of two women in 1873, while dealing with her own marital problems.

Two couples: Thomas and Jean Janes (Sean Penn and Catherine McCormack) and Thomas’ brother, Rich Janes (Josh Lucas), and his girlfriend, Adaline Gunne (Elizabeth Hurley) take a boat trip to the island of Smuttynose, off the New Hampshire coast.  Jean is conducting a personal investigation of the double murder of two women back in 1873.  Having unearthed an eyewitness account of the murders, Jane seeks to prove that the Louis Wagner (Ciarán Hinds), the man executed for the crimes, was innocent, and that his accuser, Maren Hontvedt (Sarah Polley), was instead the murderer.  The film moves back and forth between the present day and the past, dredging up the incidents surrounding the murders and also the troubles in Thomas and Jean’s marriage.

After making films that fit one way or another in the action genre, director Kathryn Bigelow tackled dysfunctional marriages, dark family secrets, and murder in the film, The Weight of Water.  Quite skilled at creating mood and atmosphere (as shown in her earlier works), Bigelow constructs a movie in which disappointment and resignation saturate the story and anger boils mightily beneath the surface.

The jumps in time, between the present and 1973, aren’t really a distraction; rather they build up tension and allow the stronger half of the film, Maren Hontvedt’s story and the murders in 1873, to support the weaker half, the Janes’ boat trip.  Watching the film, one gets the idea that Bigelow was enamored with Maren Hontvedt’s half of the film and not as interested the present day half featuring the tense dynamic between Thomas, Jean, Rich, and Adaline.  Connection with the present day sub-plots isn’t fun; at times, Bigelow handles them a little clumsily.  On the other hand, she uses the riveting and bloody tale of 1873 to carry the past and present to an ending that is both gut wrenching and heavy.  Here, through Sarah Polley as Maren, Bigelow makes her strongest case that the mistakes of the past, like insistent ghosts, never leave.  They will drown the future if they aren’t guarded against – even in a small moment of weakness when the mind, body and soul lapse into rage.

2014 Writers Guild Award Nominations - Feature Film Categories

On Friday, January 3, 2014, the Writers Guild of America, West (WGAW) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) announced nominations for outstanding achievement in writing during the year 2013 – the 2014 Writers Guild Awards.  The winners will be honored at the 2014 Writers Guild Awards on Saturday, February 1, 2014, during simultaneous ceremonies held in both Los Angeles and New York.

Alliance of Women Film Journalists Chooses "12 Years a Slave"

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists, Inc. (AWFJ) present the annual EDA Awards “in recognition of outstanding accomplishments (the best and worst) by and about women in the movies.”

The AWFJ named director Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave the "Best Film" of 2013, for which McQueen also won "Best Director."  On the "women only" side of the awards, Nicole Holofcener won for directing and writing her film, Enough Said.

Detroit Film Critics Choose "Her" as "Best Film" of 2013

The Detroit Film Critics Society was founded in Spring 2007 and currently consists of a group of 20 Michigan film critics (as December 2013) who write or broadcast in the Detroit area as well as other major cities within a 150-mile radius of the city including Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, and Flint, Michigan.

American Hustle and Short Term 12 led the pack with five nominations apiece for the 2013 Detroit Film Critics Society Awards, in nominations announced December 9. 2013.  However, when the winners were announced Friday, December 13, 2013, Spike Jonze’s Her was named “Best Film.”

15 Vie for Five 2014 Best Documentary Oscar Nominations

15 Documentary Features Advance in 2013 Oscar® Race

The Oscars nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards® for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

"War Witch" Tops 2013 Canadian Screen Awards

War Witch was named the “Best Motion Picture” of 2012 at the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards. Kim Nguyen, director of War Witch, won “Achievement in Direction.”

This was the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards, which honor achievements in Canadian film and television production, as well as achievements in digital media. In 2012, the formerly separate Genie Awards (for film) and Gemini Awards (for television) merged into a single ceremony, the Canadian Screen Awards.

War Witch, which is also known by its French-language name, Rebelle, swept away nearly all competition at the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards broadcast gala Sunday night (March 3, 2013). The Congo-set drama about child soldiers won in 10 of the 12 categories for which it was nominated.

War Witch’s teen star, Rachel Mwanza, won “Actress in a Leading Role.” Mwanza once lived on the streets of Kinshasa (the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo). Now, she is earning accolades internationally for her performance as Komona, a child forced to kill her parents and join a local warlord’s band of soldiers

2013 Canadian Screen Awards - Film Nominees

The Canadian Screen Awards honor achievements in Canadian film and television production, as well as achievements in digital media. In 2012, the formerly separate Genie Awards (for film) and Gemini Awards (for television) merged into a single ceremony, the Canadian Screen Awards.

The 2013 Canadian Screen Awards are scheduled to be held on March 3, 2013, to honor achievements in Canadian film and television production in 2012. This will be the first-ever Canadian Screen Awards ceremony. In addition, the new Canadian Screen Awards will include awards for achievements in digital media.

The 2013 Canadian Screen Award nominations were announced on January 15, 2013. The awards ceremony will be hosted by Martin Short.

Toronto Film Critics Choose Paul Thomas Anderson and Sarah Polley

The Toronto Film Critics Association named The Master as the "Best Picture of 2012" with the film's director, Paul Thomas Anderson, winning "Best Director."  Sarah Polley's film, Stories We Tell,won two honors, as best documentary and as best Canadian film, the latter of which came with a $100,000 prize.

The Toronto Film Critics Association was established in 1997 and is comprised of Toronto based journalists and broadcasters who specialize in film criticism and commentary. All major dailies, weeklies and a variety of other print and electronic outlets are represented.

Under the TFCA’s guidelines, contenders eligible for the awards include films released in Canada in 2012 plus films that qualify for the 2012 Oscars and have Canadian distribution scheduled by the end of February 2013.

Review: "eXistenZ" is as Crazy as Ever (Happy B'day, Jude Law)

eXistenZ is a 1999 Canadian/British science fiction film from director David Cronenberg. The film is set in the near-future and involves advanced video games and organic virtual realities. When Cronenberg, a surrealist and master filmmaker, tests the bounds of imagination, he makes you wonder if there really are any boundaries to imagination, or at least to his. With a filmography full of movies that are trippy experiences, it’s hard to pick out the craziest Cronenberg picture, but I’d say eXistenZ is safe bet.

Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is the world’s best game designer, and her new game, eXistenZ, is a virtual-reality masterpiece. During a demonstration or, perhaps, beta testing, of eXistenZ, a crazed fan makes a peculiar attempt on her life. Ted Pikul (Jude Law), a marketing intern at the company for whom Allegra designs games, spirits her away from the scene, but though they escape the murderous attempt on her life, this is just the beginning of a strange trip that takes them both to worlds real, unreal, and maybe real.

The usual Cronenberg themes: bodily invasion, altered states of perception, and what is real are much in evidence, but like some of his best work, eXistenZ questions what effect technology has on the human body, mind, and spirit. Cronenberg also seems to question whether humans should change their bodies and the way they live to accommodate a technology that is of only the most frivolous use – entertainment-based technology. That question permeates almost every frame of the film, and adds weight to the drama.

Many of the performances are stiff, although deliberately so, but still it’s a bit too wooden and too cold. Sometimes the acting is all a bit too affected and too smart for its own good. Jude Law and Jennifer Jason Leigh, however, give, wildly spirited and inspired performances; even their odd and taut moments have a vivacious air to them. They’re fun to watch, and the pair has a screen chemistry the just screams that this is a mismatched matched pair. For some reason it works, and they look gorgeous on the screen, making this truly odd tale fun to watch.

The best way to describe this story is too say that it deals with virtual worlds and computer generated realities like The Matrix did. eXistenZ, however, is not about cardboard philosophy, wire-fu fight scenes, and pyrotechnics and special effects as sexy eye candy. This is The Matrix for smart people.

Review: Go Have Fun with Pulp Fiction-Inspired "Go" (Happy B'day, Sarah Polley)

Some have compared it to Pulp Fiction, and Go, a film from Doug Liman (Swingers), certainly bears some similarities to Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-winning film. Go is alternately a dark, teen comedy, a delirious action movie, a snarky crime caper, and a candy coated Tarantino movie for the late teen/early 20’s set.

On first glance, Go seems to tell the story of the events that happen after a drug deal. The real launching point is simply the changing of work shifts between two young working stiffs at a small grocery store. From there, Go is three interconnected short movies, in which many of the characters from each short movie encounter one another. In that sense, it is similar to Pulp Fiction, but only stylistically and superficially.

In one story, Ronna Martin (Sarah Polley) tries to raise rent money by selling ecstasy to two men (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf) looking to buy from her co-worker, Simon Baines (Desmond Askew), who normally deals drugs. When Ronna is forced to ditch the drugs, she has to scam Simon’s supplier, a nasty little thug named, Todd (Timothy Olyphant), to whom she now owes some drug money.

Meanwhile, in the second story, Simon tears through Las Vegas with four buds. Simon and one of his pals, Marcus (Taye Diggs), find themselves in an awful mess at a strip club and on the fun from the owners.

In the third story, Adam (Wolf) and Zack (Mohr) find themselves in a predicament over drugs with the police. Their situation becomes more precarious when an undercover officer shows special interests in the two buddies, and the drama doesn’t let up when the two later become involved in a hit and run.

Go is a comedy, although there are times when it seems too dangerous to be funny, but even those tense moments unravel and reveal themselves to be uproarious situations. John August’s script is filled with over the top moments that make sense in a strange way instead of simply being over the top or just too much. It’s outlandish and absurd, but stunningly well put together. The movie plays at being very violent, but it’s mostly cartoonish, as if the film won’t quite acknowledge how painful violence can be. Or maybe, this is just part of the hedonistic life the film portrays. It’s all done in fun, and at the end of the day, all the players get to walk away from their various little “car wrecks,” though maybe an occasional fatal mistake would teach them all a lesson. Well, maybe not. They’d be slacking, doing drugs, and playing with guns the very day after burying a homie who shot himself playing with a gun or overdosing on ecstasy.

I give Liman much credit for directed this very funny film. It’s slick and glossy, but incredibly well executed. On the surface, it might seem like a rave culture version of Pulp Fiction, though it does owe more than a nodding acknowledgement to that film. However, it’s a modern, violent physical comedy where each actor and filmmaker has to hit his marks. Liman plays with incredible timing, and most of the time he gets it right. One misstep, and the film falls apart. Luckily, the film doesn’t begin to shake to pieces until the very end, but up until the closing scenes, Go is near flawless and near perfect. I’ve rarely laughed so hard at something so obviously meant to be eye candy. But Liman’s film is gourmet candy, thoughtfully concocted by a director determined to give his audience a good show. Most Tarantino clones were content simply to copy, whereas Liman and screenwriter John August were determined to give us a lurid taste of pulp fiction made from their own very best recipe.
