Acclaimed Vampire Comic Book, "Silver," Returns with Seventh Issue

Issue #7 of Award-Nominated Stephan Franck's SILVER Coming December 14, 2016

Los Angeles, CA – Dark Planet announced today that its award-nominated graphic novel series SILVER returns with the digital release of SILVER #7Of Hunters And Prey”, an explosive 53-page new extended-issue full of action, drama, and character secrets. SILVER #7 will be available on ComiXology on December 14th, 2016 and from the Dark Planet Webstore. ComiXology has previously included SILVER in its “ESSENTIAL READS” list.

An extension of Bram Stoker’s Dracula set 40 years after the seminal novel’s events, SILVER is told as a classic heist story. It features James Finnigan, a morally ambiguous, pulp-era conman, Rosalynd “Sledge” Van Helsing, who carries on her famous grandfather’s handywork, Tao Leu, a 10 year-old boy with the gift of second sight, and their team of grifters, as they attempt to steal The Silver Dragon--a massive treasure hidden in a castle full of vampires. Staying true to its literary origins while creating its own expansive and wildly original mythology, SILVER is both faithful homage and exciting reinvention.

SILVER #7 “Of Hunters And Prey” picks up where SILVER #6/ Vol. 2 left off. It focuses first on Finn and Tao’s relationship, as the kid was shaken by a recent brush with death. The issue then turns its attention to Sledge, with a 40+ page uninterrupted action sequence tour-de-force which sees her go rogue, puts her through the wringer, and ultimately culminates with the reveal of a deep, dark secret 6 issues in the making.

Since the series’ inception, SILVER has counted some of the most original and contemporary voices from the comics world among its fans:

"What impresses me about SILVER isn't just its Mignola-esque reshuffling of history, or the fanciful legerdemain that keeps the story light on its toes. It's author Stephan Franck's ability to splice genres together like a narrative geneticist. Part Ocean’s Eleven, part From Dusk Till Dawn, with an added dash of American Vampire-cum-noir, SILVER will take you deeper and deeper under its spell until you can't help but beg for more."
--Samuel Sattin, author of  Legend and The Silent End:

A Hitchcock thriller. Vintage pulp. Grindhouse cinema. SILVER has all of the elements you crave and a story that you’ll simply devour.
--David Gallaher, author of High Moon  and  The Only Living Boy

An indy grassroots sensation that came up through the convention scene, SILVER has connected with a passionate and diverse audience, including readers new to the comic book medium. “Coming from a movie background, I try to apply my film-language instincts to the comic book page, which means highlight a dramatic sense of point of view while keeping the audience oriented at all times,” says Franck. “I think that type of formalism has had a lot to do with making Silver’s storytelling accessible to people who had never picked up a comic book before. I am super proud of that.”

While Dark Planet releases SILVER’s single issues directly to digital, the series’ collected editions--SILVER Volume 1 and 2--are also distributed in print to comic shops everywhere, on Amazon, from the Dark Planet Webstore and from the Dark Planet booth at comic book conventions across the US, where the company maintains a dynamic presence. SILVER is also licensed internationally to foreign publishers around the world.

41st Annie Awards Nominations - Complete List

by Amos Semien

ASIFA-Hollywood, the Los Angeles, California branch of the International Animated Film Society, presents the Annie Awards.  The Annie honors achievements in animation as a whole, including current animated productions, as well as career and lifetime achievements.  At the beginning of this week, the group announced the nominations and award recipients for the 41st Annual Annie Awards.

Walt Disney Animation Studio’s Frozen and Pixar’s Monsters University led the feature film nominations for the 41st Annie Awards nominations with 10 each.  Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 2 and DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods followed with nine.

Right now, Frozen appears to be the Oscar favorite.  It has performed quite well at the box office.  I have yet to see the film (not interested, really), but it has been described as having “flashy visuals” and “a strong musical score and songs,” which are generally attractive to critics, audiences, and Oscar voters.  However, the Annies do not always presage the Oscars.  Last year’s Annie winner for “Best Animated Feature” was Wreck-It-Ralph, but Pixar’s Brave won “Best Animated Feature” at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs, and Academy Awards.

The 41st Annual Annie Awards will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2014 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, California.  They ceremony will be hosted by noted voice actor, Patrick Warburton.  Director Steven Spielberg (The Adventures of Tintin) will be presented with the Winsor McCay Award at the ceremony.

Animation Veteran, Stephan Franck, Announces Dark Planet Comics

Stephan Franck has been working in the animation industry for over two decades.  Franck was the supervising animator on the acclaimed animated film, The Iron Giant, and he was a storyboard artist on such feature films as Despicable Me and 9.  He has also worked on such films as Space Jam and How to Train Your Dragon.  I recently received the following press release from Franck:

COMIXOLOGY PICKS UP “SILVER”, ANIMATION VETERAN’S COMIC BOOK DEBUT

Los Angeles, 5/6/13—DARK PLANET COMICS is proud to announce the digital release of its very first title: SILVER #1, now available for download on ComiXology. Silver, a 12-issue miniseries, marks the comic book debut from animation veteran Stephan Franck (The Iron Giant, Despicable Me).

Set in a direct 1930’s extension of Bram Stoker’s universe, and steeped up to its eyeballs in the pulp tradition, SILVER introduces James Finnigan, a witty but (figuratively) soulless con man, who sets out to separate the living-dead from their silver. As Finnigan assembles the crew of talented but broken misfits needed to pull off the heist of the last ten centuries, personality conflicts, emotional entanglements and character comedy abound.

With SILVER, Franck brings the combination of light tone and character depth that has made him first-call in the animation industry. “Silver is about fathers;” Franck says; “It’s about sons. Sons who had bad fathers, and who carry the fear of not knowing how to be good into manhood. Ultimately, it’s about greed and emptiness versus the elusiveness of feeling alive.”

Comic book luminaries have been enjoying Franck’s debut comic:

“With SILVER, Stephan Franck shows how much excitement can be packed into a fast-moving, thrill-filled story...dynamic, unfussy, black and white art, all in the service of speed and momentum...a really, really fun ride.” — Tim Sale (Batman: The Long Halloween; Batman Dark Victory; Superman For All Seasons)

“A beautifully drawn and masterfully told noir/heist story with a teasing side of the supernatural that constantly kept me surprised with it’s reveals. I was particularly taken aback by the creative camera angles and use of shadows. I was kinda blown away, really.” — Takeshi Miyazawa (Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane; X-Men Unlimited; Runaways)

ABOUT STEPHAN FRANCK:
Stephan Franck is a writer/director/animator who has worked for Disney, Dreamworks, Warner Bros, Universal, Columbia Pictures, and Sony Pictures Animation. He was a supervising animator on The Iron Giant, and contributed story to films such as Despicable Me. He is the co-creator of the cult TV show, Corniel & Bernie (ADA Watch My Chops) (TF1, BBC, ABC Australia), that runs in over 60 countries and just got picked up for a second season. He’s had the giant out-of-body experience of being personally hired by George Lucas to direct a movie so cool and crazy it had to be abandoned, and just directed THE SMURFS: THE LEGEND OF SMURFY HOLLOW for Sony Pictures Animation, which is selected in official competition for the 2013 ANNECY INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL in the Best TV Special category.

ABOUT DARK PLANET COMICS
Created in 2013, Dark Planet Comics is the home of Stephan Franck’s original comic book properties. “Having a comic book imprint has been a dream of mine,” Franck says, “it’s about authorship. It’s about the commitment to put my stories out into the world in the way they were intended to be. ComiXology’s amazing platform makes this kind of independence possible.”
