Amblin Partners Begins Principal Photography on “A Dog’s Journey”
Dennis Quaid and Josh Gad Return for the Heartwarming Follow-up to “A Dog’s Purpose”
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Amblin Partners announced that it has begun principal photography on “A Dog’s Journey,” the much-anticipated follow-up to 2017’s beloved “A Dog’s Purpose.” Both films are based on the inspirational, best-selling books by award-winning author W. Bruce Cameron.

Co-financed and co-produced by Walden Media and Alibaba Pictures, “A Dog’s Journey” reunites Dennis Quaid as Ethan with his cherished dog, Bailey, voiced by Josh Gad—who also returns. Marg Helgenberger, Betty Gilpin, Henry Lau and Kathryn Prescott have joined the film, which is being directed by Gail Mancuso. The screenplay was written by W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Wally Wolodarsky & Maya Forbes. Gavin Polone is producing the film.

Walden Media Joins DreamWorks Studios’ “A Dog’s Purpose”

Based on the beloved book by W. Bruce Cameron, the screenplay was written by Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Audrey Wells. Review: "Parental Guidance" Good for Families

Parental Guidance is a 2012 comedy and family film from director Andy Fickman. The film stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as grandparents who agree to look after their three grandchildren whose modern kid attitudes clash with their old-school ways.
Artie and Diane Decker (Bette Midler and Billy Crystal) live in California. Artie is the announcer for the Fresno Grizzlies, until he is fired because he is not familiar with new technology and social media. Diane thinks this is the perfect opportunity to take their daughter, Alice (Marisa Tomei), and her husband, Phil Simmons (Tom Everett Scott), up on an offer to watch their three children, while they attend a conference in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Artie and Diane fly to Atlanta where Alice and her family live, but they have a few misgivings about the week with the children. In recent years, they have not seen their grandchildren much, and are now practically “the other grandparents.” Plus, Artie and Diane are old school, while Alice and Phil are type-A helicopter parents who micromanage their children’s’ lives and overdo it on building self-esteem.
Artie and Diane are quickly reacquainted with the grandchildren: eldest child and daughter, 12-year-old Harper (Bailee Madison); the middle child, 8-year-old Turner (Joshua Rush), who has a stutter; and 5-year-old Barker (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf), who has an imaginary friend, a kangaroo he’s named Carl. The children think their grandparents are weird, and Barker calls Artie, “Farty.” Now, Artie and Diane have a week to get to really know their only three grandchildren, but that means they’ll have to earn these youngsters’ trust and love.
Parental Guidance starts off as one of those movies created by people who criticize the way other people rear their children. People see sports leagues that give every participating child a trophy simply for participating as a sign of the apocalypse. I have to admit that I find parents that won’t tell their children “No” or “Don’t” in order not to inhibit their creativity, ridiculous. But the republic will survive parents that don’t set boundaries for their children… I hope.
The movie, however, is really about the grandparents, Artie and Diane Decker, and their relationship-building with their grandchildren. The movie follows the struggle of the old school grandparents versus the modern, excessively tolerant parents to a lesser extent. And Parental Guidance is better for it. Who wants to see a movie about two people and their daughter and son-in-law exchanging harsh, snide comments about parenting? I don’t, although I don’t know about you, dear reader.
In some ways, Parental Guidance is mediocre, which is most obvious when Crystal and Midler have to over-act and over-react to make up for flimsy character development. Andy Fickman’s direction is professional and functional, but is also colorless and sometimes uneven.
But the magic in Parental Guidance is watching two grandparents bond with their lovely grandchildren. This film is more sweet than sentimental, and there are moments when the interaction between a grandparent and child seems genuine and honest. The kick-the-can and Turner calls the Giants game scenes make this movie a winner in spite of any blemishes. Talk about a feel good movie: Parental Guidance might be a frothy take on the grandparents and grandchildren dynamic, but it is an irresistible treat.

Review: "Bridge to Terabithia" is Beautiful and Heartbreaking (Happy B'day, AnnaSophia Robb)

Bridge to Terabithia, the beloved Newberry Medal-winning book by Katherine Paterson, finally makes it to the big screen in a film produced by Walden Media. The film is co-written and co-produced by Katherine’s son, David Paterson, for whom she wrote the book a little over three decades ago. (There was a 1983 TV version produced by WonderWorks and broadcast on PBS.)
Jesse Aaron (Josh Hutcherson) is an outcast at home and at school. His parents seem to focus all their attention on his two older and two young sisters and have little time for their only son, the middle child. At school, he is a loner and his interest in drawing only makes his isolation worse. In this situation arrives a new classmate, Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), the only daughter of well-to-do writers. Her free-spirited ways and mall punk fashion sense also don’t fit in well with her new rural home.
Although Jesse at first resists, he eventually accepts Leslie’s overtures of friendship. She takes him deep into the local woods, and together, with Leslie’s imagination as the catalyst, the duo creates the make-believe kingdom of Terabithia, a magical land of giants, trolls, and assorted fantastical monsters and creatures where they’re free to be themselves. In Terabithia, the outcast duo reigns supreme and plot revenge against their fellow schoolmates who bully them, but tragedy will test the fate of their creation.
Although I haven’t read the book as of writing this, I have to wonder that Bridge to Terabithia the book must be wonderful source material. Walt Disney’s advertising campaign for the film’s theatrical release is deceptive. Bridge to Terabithia is not a fantasy like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. It’s a heartfelt drama about childhood friendships and the trials and adversities of pre-teen life, and the real lives of Jesse and Leslie, not Terabithia, is where the story and its themes largely exist. The make-believe world of Terabithia represents a place of total freedom, where the two heroes can be who they want to be free of the judgments and criticisms of the real world.
Taking its cue from Katherine Paterson’s book, the film focuses on the complexities of making friendships and of family dynamics. Friendships can be formed between people who are not at all alike, whether the differences are because of personality or socio-economic status, the film says. The story also emphasizes that families are not perfect, nor are the relationships within families perfect, as parents may show more favor or attention to some children than others.
Director Gabor Csupo (of Klasky-Csupo, the creators of “Rugrats” and “The Wild Thornberrys,” among others) shows great restrain in focusing the film on the relationship dynamics, and makes the film an engaging drama and universal story. Terabithia is a source of strength and unquestioning love that carries over into the real world to help our two heroes survive the pratfalls and obstacles of childhood. Bridge to Terabithia, the beloved Newberry Medal-winning book by Katherine Paterson, finally makes it to the big screen in a film produced by Walden Media. The film is co-written and co-produced by Katherine’s son, David Paterson, for whom she wrote the book a little over three decades ago. (There was a 1983 TV version produced by WonderWorks and broadcast on PBS.)
Jesse Aaron (Josh Hutcherson) is an outcast at home and at school. His parents seem to focus all their attention on his two older and two young sisters and have little time for their only son, the middle child. At school, he is a loner and his interest in drawing only makes his isolation worse. In this situation arrives a new classmate, Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb), the only daughter of well-to-do writers. Her free-spirited ways and mall punk fashion sense also don’t fit in well with her new rural home.
Although Jesse at first resists, he eventually accepts Leslie’s overtures of friendship. She takes him deep into the local woods, and together, with Leslie’s imagination as the catalyst, the duo creates the make-believe kingdom of Terabithia, a magical land of giants, trolls, and assorted fantastical monsters and creatures where they’re free to be themselves. In Terabithia, the outcast duo reigns supreme and plot revenge against their fellow schoolmates who bully them, but tragedy will test the fate of their creation.
Although I haven’t read the book as of writing this, I have to wonder that Bridge to Terabithia the book must be wonderful source material. Walt Disney’s advertising campaign for the film’s theatrical release is deceptive. Bridge to Terabithia is not a fantasy like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter. It’s a heartfelt drama about childhood friendships and the trials and adversities of pre-teen life, and the real lives of Jesse and Leslie, not Terabithia, is where the story and its themes largely exist. The make-believe world of Terabithia represents a place of total freedom, where the two heroes can be who they want to be free of the judgments and criticisms of the real world.
Taking its cue from Katherine Paterson’s book, the film focuses on the complexities of making friendships and of family dynamics. Friendships can be formed between people who are not at all alike, whether the differences are because of personality or socio-economic status, the film says. The story also emphasizes that families are not perfect, nor are the relationships within families perfect, as parents may show more favor or attention to some children than others.
Director Gabor Csupo (of Klasky-Csupo, the creators of “Rugrats” and “The Wild Thornberrys,” among others) shows great restrain in focusing the film on the relationship dynamics, and makes the film an engaging drama and universal story. Review: "Holes" is a Winning Mystery Film (Happy B'day, Shia LaBeouf)

At the camp, he meets a colorful cast of campmates, and like them, he has to dig a hole a day to keep The Warden (Sigourney Weaver) and her henchmen, Mr. Sir (Jon Voight) and Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson) at bay. There is, however, more to digging those holes than just the character building Mr. Sir says digging gives a boy. Stanley’s family history is somehow tied to incidents that happened a century ago where Camp Green Lake stands today, and Stanley and his new friend, Hector Zeroni or “Zero” (Khelo Thomas) are going to solve that old mystery, even if it gets them in trouble with The Warden and endangers their lives.
In Holes, the star of the film is not the setting, although the rundown camp and desert add a sense of foreboding and mystery to the film. The star is also not the story, which is intriguing with its twists and turns, interconnectedness with the past, and the fact that characters from the past are related to some in the present. Holes’ star, its center of radiance, is then-16-year old Shia LaBeouf, although his name was fourth on the marquee, behind the better-known adult actors. Shia drives this film, and the narrative sometimes drifts when it shifts away from him, especially when it shifts to the past. Shia epitomizes the average kid who rises to the challenge – a Harry Potter type, and that talent is this film’s charm.
I liked the central mystery and Holes’ resounding message about family and legacy. The mild turn of the 20th-century romance, that happens in a series of flashbacks during Stanley’s time at the camp, can feel a little jagged (because it was such a dangerous thing for two people to do), but the romance only adds to this Holes’ sense of peril and risk. Tim Blake Nelson stands out amongst the adult cast, and it’s always good to see Sigourney Weaver on the big screen. The rest of the boys in the camp seem woefully underutilized, but even their relatively small parts help to make Holes a compelling family drama and a winning juvenile mystery.

One year after the events depicted in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the two youngest Pevensie children, Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley), are living in Cambridge with their cousins, the Scrubbs. Their older siblings, Susan (Anna Popplewell) and Peter (William Moseley), are in the United States with their parents. Lucy and Edmund now have their obnoxious cousin, Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter), as a disagreeable companion.
The adventure beings when a magical painting transports Lucy, Edmund, and Eustace to an ocean in Narnia. There, the trio is rescued by Caspian (Ben Barnes) and the large talking mouse, Reepicheep (Simon Pegg), and taken aboard the sailing ship, the Dawn Treader. Three years have passed in Narnia since the Pevensie siblings last visited, and Caspian is now the King of Narnia. King Caspain is on a quest to find the seven Lost Lords of Narnia and invites the Pevensies and their cousin to join him.
During a visit to the Lone Islands, they discover a slavery ring that sacrifices people to a mysterious green mist. In order to save the sacrificial victims, the crew of the Dawn Treader must sail to Dark Island where resides a corrupting evil that threatens to destroy all of Narnia. Lucy, Edmund, King Caspian, and Eustace will find themselves tested as they journey to the far end of world and to the home of the great lion, Aslan (Liam Neeson).
As was the case with Prince Caspian, I enjoyed The Voyage of the Dawn Treader much more than I did the first Narnia film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Dawn Treader is the cleanest and purest of the series, thus far. It is a straightforward adventure, an ocean-going tale that takes the characters from one obstacle they must overcome to another. Its philosophical theme is also simple – fighting, avoiding, and overcoming temptation. Its spiritual theme – the yearning to be one with the almighty or perfection – is surprisingly up front, and the story is almost frank in equating Aslan with the Christian God.
The main characters: Lucy, Edmond, and Caspian do not offer anything new in terms of personality; they’re like old friends, now. The story does get a much needed jolt in new characters, such as the firm captain of the Dawn Treader, Lord Drinian (Gary Sweet), and especially the tart Eustace Scrubb. While the arc of Eustace’s change is interesting, what is best about the character is Will Poulter’s portrayal of Eustace. Pitch-perfect in his performance, Poulter makes the annoying Eustace a scene stealer who will make the audience want more of him.
The special effects in this third movie are better than those in the second film. Although not as impressive as those in the original film (which won an Oscar), the visual effects in this film seem more inventive and even more magical. This is Michael Apted’s touch as director; he makes the most of what he has. He doesn’t get the most impressive acting, but he makes it seem so. Apted doesn’t have a solid villain in the evil green mist, which essentially represents temptation, but he adds chilling touches using the mist.
In the final act, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader especially emphasizes its Christian elements. The spiritual messages will make some yearn for God, but even more people will be sad that the end of this movie means that we must once again leave Narnia – until we return…

Robin Hood has distributed thousands of vouchers redeemable for admission to any performance of the film at select New York theaters over a three-week period starting Friday, October 22. There will be additional free screenings of the film to be shown throughout the five boroughs over the next several months.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Sept. 9, 2010 — Paramount Pictures, Participant Media and Walden Media announced today 60,000 people have pledged to see the award-winning documentary film WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” when it opens this fall, making it the fourth goal reached on the campaign’s “Pledge Progress Meter.” As a result, First Book and global education leader Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH) will distribute an additional $100,000 worth of new books to schools and programs in low-income communities across the country. First Book and HMH initially joined forces at the 50,000 level by donating 250,000 new books in a similar fashion. The books will be generously provided by HMH and distributed through First Book’s award-winning book distribution channels.
“We’re thrilled by the opportunity to continue our support of WAITING FOR ‘SUPERMAN,’” said Barry O’Callaghan, HMH’s Chief Executive Officer. “Together with First Book, we can use this opportunity to put better educational resources in the hands of the nation’s teachers and students.”
WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) will be released under the Paramount Vantage banner and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It examines the crisis of public education in the United States through multiple interlocking stories. Designed to start a national conversation, the movie and corresponding “Take the Pledge” campaign aim to inspire everyone to create innovative and long-term solutions to help change the course of our kids’ lives for the better.
The “Pledge Progress Meter” launched in May as a way for non-profits, foundations and corporations to match individual pledge levels with powerful action items aimed at helping both students and public schools. First Book was the first organization to take the pledge.
The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 24, nationwide in October.
The film is produced by Lesley Chilcott, with Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann serving as executive producers. It is written by Davis Guggenheim & Billy Kimball.

OfficeMax Fulfills Commitment to Waiting for "Superman"

HOLLYWOOD, CA (August 23, 2010) – Paramount Pictures, Participant Media and Walden Media announced today 40,000 people have pledged to see the award-winning documentary film WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” when it opens this fall, making it the second goal reached on the campaign’s “Pledge Progress Meter.” As a result, Chicago-based office supply retailer OfficeMax® is fulfilling its commitment to add 40 deserving U.S. teachers to its “A Day Made Better” program.
Now in it’s 4th year, the OfficeMax program helps defray the out-of-pocket expenditures on school supplies by dedicated teachers by awarding 1,000 outstanding teachers with $1,000 in school supplies.
"Thanks to more than 40,000 pledges to see this important documentary film, OfficeMax is pleased to surprise 40 deserving teachers across the country with a total of $40,000 in school supplies on behalf of our national cause called A Day Made Better," said Bill Bonner, senior director of external relations for OfficeMax. "By joining the ‘Take the Pledge’ campaign, we hope to call attention to the issue of teacher out-of-pocket spending, encourage national support and start erasing teacher teacher-funded classrooms."
WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN” directed by Davis Guggenheim (“An Inconvenient Truth”) will be released under the Paramount Vantage banner and distributed by Paramount Pictures. It examines the crisis of public education in the United States through multiple interlocking stories. Designed to start a national conversation, the movie and corresponding “Take the Pledge” campaign aim to inspire everyone to create innovative and long-term solutions to help change the course of our kids’ lives for the better. The “Pledge Progress Meter” launched in May as a way for non-profits, foundations and corporations to match individual pledge levels with powerful action items aimed at helping both students and public schools. First Book was the first organization to take the pledge, by agreeing to donate 250,000 new books to schools and programs in low-income communities across the country once the pledge meter reaches 50,000 pledges.
The film opens in New York and Los Angeles on September 24, nationwide in October.
The film is produced by Lesley Chilcott, with Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Diane Weyermann serving as executive producers. It is written by Davis Guggenheim & Billy Kimball.
