NEWS:

BOX OFFICE - From Deadline:  In Thursday (12/19/2024) preview shows, "Sonic the Hedgehog 3's" total of 6.5 million dollars tops "Mufasa's" 3.3 million dollars.

OSCARS - From DeadlineThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has released the "Oscar shortlists" in 10 categories.  Those categories of "International Feature Film," "Documentary Feature," "Original Song," "Music Score" and "Documentary Short," "Animated Short," "Live Action Shorts," "Sound," "Visual Effects," and "Makeup & Hairstyling."  The nominations for the 2025 / 97th Academy Awards will be announced Friday, January 17, 2025, and the winners will be announced Sunday, March 2, 2025.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Apparently, the late Angela Lansbury was going to reprise the role of "Jessica Fletcher," which she played in the long-running former CBS mysteries series, "Murder, She Wrote" (1984-96), and in four made-for-TV movies, in a theatrical film.  Lansbury passed away in 2022, and now comes word that actress Jamie Lee Curtis is the lead to replace Lansbury as Fletcher in the planned "Murder, She Wrote" film.

MOVIES - From Deadline: "Wicked: Part 2" has been retitled "Wicked: For Good."  The film is due November 21, 2025.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 12/13 to 12/15/2024 weekend box office is Disney's "Moana 2" with an estimated take of 26.6 million dollars.

From Deadline:  "Deadline" examines why Sony Pictures' "Kraven the Hunter" had the lowest opening weekend at the box office (11 million dollars) for any "Marvel-branded" movie.

MUSIC - From THR:  A former law enforcement officer in Ventura County, CA has discovered a set of 12 tapes that contain lost recordings of the late singer, Michael Jackson.  Some of the tapes include unreleased music that Jackson recorded between 1989 and 1991 before the release of his 1991 album, "Dangerous."

BOWL SCHEDULE - From YahooSports:  Here is your 2024-2024 college football bowl schedule with games, matchups, times, and dates.  Most of the games are on ESPN.

It begins with the "Cricket Celebration Bowl" on Saturday, December 14th featuring Jackson State vs South Carolina State at Noon EST on ABC.

The first round of the "College Football Playoff" begins Friday, December 20th with Indiana at Notre Dame at 8 p.m. EST on ESPN.

It all climaxes January 20th, 2025 with the "College Football Playoff National Championship" on ESPN.

From EW:  The nominations for the 2025 / 82nd Annual Golden Globes have been announced.  "Emilia Perez" leads with 10 nominations.  The winners will be announced January 5, 2025 on CBS and Paramount+.

DISNEY - From Variety:  Disney Branded Television has just ordered a limited revival of the former Fox Network Television series, "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000-06), for Disney+.  Series stars Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, and Jane Kazcmarek are expected to return.

AWARDS - From IndieWire:  The nominations for the 2025 / 30th Annual Critics Choice Awards have been announced.  "Wicked" and "Conclave" lead with 11 nominations each.

GOLDEN GLOBES - From EW:  The nominations for the 2025 / 82nd Annual Golden Globes have been announced.  "Emilia Perez" leads with 10 nominations.  The winners will be announced January 5, 2025 on CBS and Paramount+.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Announced two years ago, actor Henry Cavill was to star in and executive produce a TV series based on the "Warhammer 40,000" game, and now, the series is officially in development.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 12/6 to 12/8/2024 weekend box office is Walt Disney's "Moana 2" with an estimated take of 52 million dollars.

MOVIES - From ThePlaylist:  Since Joaquin Phoenix abruptly quit Todd Haynes' planned gay romantic drama in August, people have wondered what is next for Haynes' cancelled film.  Haynes recently said that the film and script could be resurrected in a different for someday.  Haynes' latest was 2023's "May December."

OBIT:

From Deadline:  Studio executive, Steve Mensch, has died at the age of 62, Friday, December 6, 2024.  Mensch was President and Manager of General Operations for Tyler Perry Studios.  Mensch joined TPS in 2016 and oversaw the studio's transition to the former Fort McPherson Army Base in Atlanta, which was converted into a 330-acre film and TV production lot.  Mensch died in a single-seat plane crash.  He is survived by a wife and three children.

MOVIES/TRAILERS - From THR:  Sony Pictures has released a mysterious teaser for "28 Years Later," the follow-up to the zombie apocalypse films, "28 Days Later" (2002) and "28 Weeks Later" (2007). The film is due June 20, 2025.

MOVIES - From ThePlaylist:  Amy Adams is keeping the secrets of her new film, Marielle Heller's "Nightbitch," to herself.

HARRY POTTER - From THR:  "The Hollywood Reporter" is reporting that actor Paapa Essiedu ("I May Destroy You") is being considered to play the role of "Professor Severus Snape" in HBO's "Harry Potter" television series.  The role was played by the late Alan Rickman across eight "Harry Potter" theatrical films.

AWARDS - From NBRThe National Board of Review has named its 2024 film honorees.  "Wicked" wins "Best Film" and "Best Director" (for John M. Chu).

From Variety:  "Moana 2" made an estimated 221 million dollars at the domestic box office over the five-day "Thanksgiving holiday weekend" period. The previous record was held by Disney's "Frozen II" with a five-day take of 125 million dollars in 2019.

OBITS:

From Variety:  American screenwriter and director, Marshall Brickman, has died at the age of 85, Friday, November 29, 2024.  Brickman was probably best known for his collaborations with Woody Allen.  Brickman and Allen shared the "Best Original Screenplay" Oscar for Allen's 1977 film, "Annie Hall."  Brickman shared writing credits with Allen on three other films, "Sleeper" (1973), "Manhattan" (1979), and "Manhattan Murder Mystery" (1993).  Brickman also directed three films, including the comedies, "Simon" (1980) and "Lovesick" (1983).

From Deadline:  British-born American assistant director and producer, Adam Somner, has died at the age of 57, Wednesday, November 27, 2024.  Somner was the go-to assistant director for Steven Spielberg (12 films), Paul Thomas Anderson (6), and Ridley Scott (6).  Somner received a "Best Picture" Oscar nomination, shared with Sara Murphy and Paul Thomas Anderson, for Anderson's 2021 film, "Licorice Pizza."

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Idris Elba is set to star as "Man-At-Arms" in Amazon/MGM's "Masters of the Universe."  Nicholas Galitzine is set to play "He-Man" in a film directed by Travis Knight.

MOVIES - From WorldofReelRobert Pattinson has been cast in Christopher Nolan's next film which begins shooting in several countries across Europe. Pattinson was previously in Nolan's wonderful film, "Tenet."

CELEBRITY - From THR:  "The Hollywood Reporter" names their 10 hottest young stars in Hollywood."

CABLE - From DeadlineComcast is spinning off all its linear cable networks (except "Bravo") into a separate company apart from NBCUniversal. The castoffs... err... I mean spinoffs include MSNBC, CNCB, E!, Syfy, and USA, to name a few.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineSeason 5 of the CBS hit, "The Equalizer," will introduce two guest characters with the potential to spun off into their own series.

MUSIC/DISNEY - From DeadlineDisney has snatched the rights to broadcast and stream the Grammy Awards ceremony from CBS, which has been broadcasting the Grammy Awards for 50 years.  The 10 year deal will see the Grammy Awards broadcast on ABC and stream on Hulu and Disney+ beginning in 2027 and ending 2036.

MOVIES - From DeadlineKeenan Ivory Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Marlon Wayans are uniting for the first time in 18 years (since 2006's "Little Man") for a return to the "Scary Movie" franchise.  The movie, which would shoot next year, is scheduled for a theatrical release.

SCANDAL - From YahooNews:  Actor, comedian, and voice performer, Jay Johnston, was sentenced to federal prison for one year and a day for his activities during the U.S. Capitol attack and riot on January 6th, 2021. Johnston is best known for his work on such television comedies as "Mr. Show with Bob and David" (HBO), "The Sarah Silverman Program" (Comedy Central), and the Fox Network's "Arrested Development" and "Bob's Burgers."

MOVIES/STAGE - From DeadlineGeorge Clooney is bringing his 2005 film, "Good Night, and Good Luck," to Broadway.  This time he will play legendary veteran journalist, Edward R. Murrow.  Actor David Strathairn played Murrow in the 2005 which Clooney directed. Performances will begin March 2025.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 10/25 to 10/27/2024 weekend box office is Sony Pictures' "Venom: The Last Dance" with an estimated take of 51 million dollars.

KAMALA - From TheAtlantic:  Film and television impresario, Tyler Perry, has apparently made a better closing argument for why people should vote for VP Kamala Harris instead of disgraced former president, Trump.  Perry says “It was so important for me to stand with a candidate who understands that we, as America—we are a quilt. And I could never stand with a candidate who wants America to be a sheet.”

LGBTQ - From Deadline: Gay actor, Luke Evans, says he can't think of another gay star getting the kind of macho roles he plays.  The Welsh actor has starred in "The Hobbit" and "Fast & Furious" films and is playing a tough, straight guy in Amazon's upcoming, "Criminal."

From Deadline:  American film and television actress, Terri Garr, has died at the age of 79, Tuesday, October 29, 2024.  Garr was best known for appearing in such films as Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstine" (1974), Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), and Sydney Pollack's "Tootsie" (1982).  She received a "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar nomination for her work in "Tootsie."  In television, Garr appeared in multiple episodes of "McCloud," "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour," and "Friend," to name a few.

From Deadline:  American television scriptwriter and producer, Jeri Taylor, has died at the age of 86, Thursday, October 24, 2024.  Taylor was best known for her work on television series, "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Voyager."  Taylor is credited with writing 13 episode of TNG; 3 episodes of DS9, and numerous episodes of "Voyager," which she co-created with Rick Berman and Michael Piller.  Taylor shared a Primetime Emmy nomination as a producer on the final season of "The Next Generation."  Taylor also wrote multiple episodes of such TV series as "Qunicy, M.E.," "Magnum P.I.," and "In the Heat of the Night," to name a few.

BUSINESS - From DeadlineSony Pictures was an acquisition target just eight years ago... according to rumors.  Now, comes reports that Sony Pictures Entertainment is in talks with Apollo Global Management to make a move on acquire Paramount Global.  Currently Skydance/Redbird Capital is in exclusive talkes with Paramount Global's majority shareholder, National Amusements, about taking control of Paramount.

From THRCurtis "50 Cent" Jackson has expanded his G-United Film and Television Inc empire into Louisiana by opening "G-Unit Studios" in Shreveport. It will be an in-house production facility.

MOVIES - From Deadline:   Quentin Tarantino has changed his mind about making his previously announced film, "The Movie Critic," as his 10th and final film.  He has moved onto something else... at least for the time being.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Actors from the "Scream" film franchise show up to support fired "Scream 7" actress, Melissa Barrera, at the premiere of her new film, "Abigail."

ANIMATION - From Deadline:  "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane is partnering, through his Seth MacFarlane Foundation, with Martin Scorsese’s Film Foundation to fund the first-ever, curated restoration of historically significant animated shorts from the 1920s to 1940s.  Nine animated pics from Max and Dave Fleischer, the founders of Fleischer Studios and the creators of Betty Boop and Koko the Clown, are among the pieces that are being restored. 

MOVIES - From SlashFilmSteven Spielberg says his likely next project is "a UFO film based on his own original idea."  David Koepp is reportedly writing the screenplay.  Aliens has been a frequent Spielberg theme, from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977) and "E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" (2008).

MOVIES - From Variety:  At 81, Martin Scorsese is still ready to go.  He has planned his next two projects.  The first is a film about Jesus, who could be played by Andrew Garfield or Miles Teller, and would begin shooting later this year.  The second film is a biography of legendary singer and recording artist, Frank Sinatra.  The Sinatra pic would star Leonardo DiCaprio as Sinatra and Jennifer Lawrence as his second wife, Ava Gardner.

TELEVISION - From THRCBS has given a formal series order, "The Gates," which follows the lives of a wealthy African-American family in a posh, gated community.  The series, which debuts January 2025, is the first Black soap opera in 35 years.

SPORTS - From NBA:  The National Basketball Association (NBA) begins its playoffs today with the first two of three Western Conference "play-in" games tonight.  The Eastern Conference play-in games start tomorrow night.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 4/12 to 4/14/2024 weekend box office is A24's "Civil War" with an estimated box office of 25.7 million dollars.

AWARDS - From Deadline:  The winners at the 76th Writers Guild of America Awards were announced Sunday night (April 14th).  "The Holdovers" written by David Hemingson won "Original Screenplay." The film was directed by Alexander Payne.  "American Fiction" written by Nord Jefferson and based on the novel, "Erasure"by Percival Everett. The film was also directed by Jefferson.

From Deadline:  At the 76th Writers Guild of America Awards, "The Price is Right" host, Drew Carey explains why he covered the costs of striking writers meals. He said "Everybody [the screenwriters] in this room made some actor a million dollars.

From Variety:  The 76th Writers Guild of America Awards are tonight, Sun., April 14th.  Actress Niecy Nash-Betts is hosting the Los Angeles end of the ceremony, which will not be broadcast.

From FoxLA11:  Here are the nominees for the 76th Writers Guild of America Awards.  Oscar winners "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie" lead the film nominees.  "Succession" leads the television categories.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Blitz Bazawule, director of the recent version of "The Color Purple," has set up his next film, "Black Samurai," at Warner Bros.  The story will follow Yasuke, an African warrior who served under Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period of samurai conflict in 16th century Japan.

CELEBRITY - From Deadline:  Actress and Grammy-winning recording  Fantasia Barrino, has set up an entertainment company, Rock Soul Productions, with live event producer and artist manager, Yvonne McNair.  It will be a full-service operation with areas in management, production, and entertainment ventures.  Fantasia will be the company's CEO and Yvonne the president.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineTim Kring is developing "Heroes: Eclipsed," a new incarnation of his former NBC superhero serial drama, "Heroes" (2006-10).  Kring also created the follow-up for NBC, "Heroes Reborn" (2015-16).

OBITS:

From THR:  The film and television actress, Barbara O. Jones, has died at the age of 82, Tuesday, April 16, 2024.  Part of the "L.A. Rebellion" movement of black filmmakers in the 1970s, Jones may be best known for her role as the prostitute who returns home, "Yellow Mary" in Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust (1991).  She also starred in Haile Gerima's "Bush Mama" (1979) and as the wife of Muhammad Ali's character in the NBC TV miniseries, "Freedom Road" (1979).  Her TV career also included roles in such series as "Wonder Woman" and "Lou Grant."

From Deadline:  British special effects artist, Roger Dicken, has died at the age of 84, Sunday, February 18, 2024.  He shared an Oscar nomination in the category of "Best Visual Effects" for his work in the 1971 film, "When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth."  He did freelance work on "2001: A Space Odyssey," for which he did receive a screen credit.  Dicken worked on the "chest buster" scene in Ridley Scott's "Alien" (1979).  Dicken also worked on such films as "Scars of Dracula" (1970) and "The Hunger" (1980).

NAACP/BLM - From Deadline:  The 2024 / 55th Annual NAACP Image Awards came to a close.  Grammy-winning recording artist, Usher, won the "Entertainer of the Year."  "The Color Purple" continued with wins in the category of "Outstanding Motion Picture," "Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture" (Fantasia Barrino), "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture" (Coleman Domingo), "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture" (Taraji P. Henson).  The film also won in five other categories.

From Variety:  The winners at the 2024 / 96th Academy Awards were announced.  "Oppenheimer" took the lead with seven wins, including "Best Picture," "Best Director" (Christopher Nolan), "Best Actor" (Cillian Murphy), and "Best Supporting Actor" (Robert Downey, Jr.).

From Deadline:  The winners for the 2024 / 24th annual Black Reel Awards were announced Jan. 16th, 2024.  "American Fiction" took home the top honor, "Outstanding Film," one of six trophies it won. "The Color Purple" won nine trophies, the most for a musical in the history of the Black Reel Awards.

From Variety: The nominations for the 2024 / 96th Academy Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" leads with 13 nominations, and "Poor Things" follows with 11.  The winners will be announced Sun., March 10th, 2024.

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The latest "Game of Thrones" spinoff, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight" is currently in pre-production and will debut in late 2025.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Warner Bros. has signed Tom Cruise and Margot Kidder to be big production deals.  It has spent $200 million on its "Joker" sequel.  It's all to make Warner Bros. attractive to a buyer or merger partner beginning in April.

MOVIES/TRAILERS - From DeadlineLionsgate has released the first trailer for its star-studded film adaptation of the videogame, "Borderlands."  Directed by Eli Roth, the film stars Cate Blanchett who leads a cast including Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis, to name a few.  It is due in theaters August 9, 2024.

MUSIC - From DeadlineBeyonce has become the first Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard's "Hot Country Songs" chart.  Her song, "Texas Hold 'Em," released February 11, 2024, debuted at the top of the "Hot Country Songs" list.

MOVIES - From DeadlineGareth Edwards is in final negotiations to direct the fourth "Jurassic World" movie.  This comes after news that talks with the first choice, "John Wick" director David Leitch, fell through.  Edwards is best known for directing Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and recently directing "The Creator."  The new Jurassic World movie is due in theaters July 2, 2025.

MOVIES/BOOKS - From Deadline:  Stephen Kings calls out Warner Bros. on Twitter for holding back on the released date of "Salem's Lot," its film adaptation of King's 1975 classic horror novel. The film has been having release date changes since September 2022.

MOVIES/MUSIC - From Deadline:  Oscar-winning director, Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") will direct four separate films about "The Beatles."  Each film will focus on one of four members of "the Fab Four": John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

AMAZON - From DeadlineJonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the high-profile limited series, Amazon Prime Video‘s "Blade Runner 2099."  Van Tulleken also directed the first two episodes of FX's upcoming "Shogun."

BAFTAS - From Deadline:  The winners at the 2024 / 77th BAFTA Film Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" wins seven awards, including "Best Film," "Best Director" (Christopher Nolan), and "Best Actor" (Cillian Murphy).

MOVIES - From DeadlineSony Pictures has bought the international film distribution rights for "Materialists," the next film from Celine Song, whose recent "Past Lives" has won several awards and is currently Oscar-nominated.  A24 will handle the U.S. release.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 2/16 to 2/18/2024 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "Bob Marley: One Love" with an estimated take of 27.7 million dollars.

MOVIES - From DeadlineRidley Scott will direct Paramount Pictures' biopic about the Grammy-winning, hit-making pop music group, the "Bee Gees" (brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb).

OBITS:

From Deadline:   Film, television, and stage actor, Paul D'Amato, has died at the age of 75, Monday, February 19, 2024.  D'Amato is best known for the role of "Tim 'Dr. Hook' McMcCraken" in the 1977 sports movie classic, "Slap Shot."  He also appeared in such films as "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Suspect" (1987).

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, Tony Ganios, has died at the age of 64, Sunday, February 18, 2024.  Ganios may be best known for two roles, his debut role as "Paul LaGuardia" in "The Wanderers" (1979) and as "Anthony 'Meat' Tuperello" in the hit 1981 sex comedy, Porky's, and its two sequels.  He also had a recurring role in the former CBS crime drama, "Wiseguy."
