"ODY-C" Comic Book Gets First Trade Paperback Collection
ODY-C, VOL. 1 retells the classic epic this June
The sci-fi series will be collected into trade paperback
New York Times bestselling writer Matt Fraction (SEX CRIMINALS, Hawkeye) teams up with Christian Ward (INFINITE VACATION, Olympus) for an expansive, immersive, retelling of Homer’s classic epic in ODY-C. The first five issues of the series has been collected into trade paperback and is available this month (June).
An epic 26 centuries in the making, ODY-C, VOL. 1 is set in the aftermath of a galactic war a hundred years long. Odyssia the Clever Champion and her compatriots begin their longest, strangest trip yet: the one home. ODY-C—the gender-bent, eye-popping, psychedelic, science fiction odyssey—begins here.
ODY-C, VOL. 1 (ISBN: 978-1-63215-376-0) hit comic book stores on June 10, 2015 and will be in bookstores on June 23, 2015, and will be available for $9.99. It can be ordered by retailers from Diamond Book Distributors with Diamond Code MAR150539.
More praise for ODY-C:
"A trippy, gender-flipped version of Homer's Odyssey hurtling through space on psychedelic, science fiction wings." —WIRED
“According to the letters page, they were going for a mix of Barbarella and a Cirque de Soleil show, and they hit the nail on the f*cking head. It's a kinetic, psychedelic, trippy journey through this new universe, this new history, with innovative panel layouts, action, and a musical quality to the whole thing. It's a helluva comic, unlike anything I've read in awhile” —Comic Bastards
“One of the best new series of 2014. Its the kind of Sci-Fi I want to see more of in the future: mature, adventurous and challenging.” —Nerds Unchained
“Despite the fact that the Odyssey is a very familiar story, Matt Fraction and Christian Ward play on audience expectations to craft a story that stands apart from the many adaptations of Homer's work. The abstract art creates a singular look for this world, which simultaneously appears futuristic and classic, and is rich in detail and subtle symbolism that elevates the story's themes. Fraction's decision to flip the genders is an interesting enough choice on its own, but he takes it one step further by playing against the contrasting warrior/mother sides of Odyssia. This team has singular creative vision, and they work together perfectly to execute it.” —Multiversity Comics
“The weird sci-fi Odyssey fever dream you didn't know you wanted… ODY-C gives new life to an old legend in a daring, profound way.” —Comic Book Resources

Review: Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz Shine in "Big Eyes"
TRASH IN MY EYE No. 25 (of 2015) by Leroy Douresseaux
Big Eyes (2014)
Running time: 106 minutes (1 hour, 46 minutes)
MPAA – PG-13 for thematic elements and brief strong language
DIRECTOR: Tim Burton
WRITERS: Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski
PRODUCERS: Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, Tim Burton, and Lynette Howell
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Bruno Delbonnel
EDITOR: JC Bond
COMPOSER: Danny Elfman
Golden Globe winner
DRAMA/BIOPIC
Starring: Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, Terence Stamp, Jon Polito, Delaney Raye, Madeleine Arthur, and James Saito
Big Eyes is a 2014 biographical drama from director Tim Burton. The film is a dramatization of the complicated relationship between American pop-art painter, Margaret Keane, and her husband, Walter Keane. Brothers Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein are executive producers on the film.
Margaret Keane is famous for her “big eyes” paintings, which are paintings featuring children as waifs with big doe eyes. For a decade, Margaret's second husband, Walter Keane, took credit for the paintings because, as he told Margaret, people would take her paintings seriously if they were credited to a man. Margaret's paintings became hugely popular in the 1960s and earned the couple a large fortune, but Walter became more domineering the more prominence “big eyes” art attained.
Big Eyes opens in 1958 in Northern California. Margaret Ulbrich (Amy Adams), a painter, leaves her husband and takes her young daughter, Jane (Delaney Raye), with her. Mother and child arrive in North Beach, San Francisco where Margaret's friend, DeAnn (Krysten Ritter), lives. One day, Margaret in selling drawings in a local park when she catches the attention of Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz), a painter who is also selling his art in the park.
Margaret and Walter marry, and Walter begins to try to sell both their paintings. People ignore Walter's paintings, but the “big eyes” paintings of his new wife, Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), soon become a sensation. Walter lies when people ask him and claims to be the creator of the “big eyes” art, and Margaret goes along with him. The “big eyes” become a sensation, but Margaret cannot truly find peace of mind. Can she ever break away from Walter and take credit for her work?
When director Tim Burton's 2003 film, Big Fish, debuted, some critics said that Burton had finally made an adult film instead of his usual, a fantasy film. Big Fish actually had its share of surrealism and eccentricity, like practically all Burton's work. I think Burton's first adult film was the fanciful biopic, Ed Wood, which was more humorous than dramatic.
One might call Big Fish an adult film, but I found it dull and stiff. Burton's 2014 movie, Big Eyes, is a drama, and it is similar to Ed Wood in that both movies focus on an outside or cult artist. Big Eyes simply plays the biographical matter in a straighter fashion than Ed Wood. In that movie, Ed Wood and his band of merry filmmakers were weirdos (and I'm not saying this in a pejorative manner). Margaret Keane's art may be weird, but the screenwriters, Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, and even director Tim Burton take her life seriously. Their movie is a fictional account of Keane's life that details the path she took to independence and to an awakening.
Since her coming-out-party in the indie film, Junebug, Amy Adams has been one of the best American actresses of the last decade. As Margaret Keane, she gives one of her best performances, if not her best. She embodies in herself and shows the struggle of a woman who is trying to break free of everything that holds her back – including herself. In her face and in her emotions, Adams conveys the trials of the artist trying to claim her own work and of a woman living in an era when the wife must be “the little wifey” and little more.
It is a testament to Christoph Waltz's skill as an actor and a performer that he keeps Walter Keane from being burned in the radiance of Adams' performance. Waltz makes it impossible to believe much of what Walter says, but he also keeps the fraudulent painter from becoming a caricature. In his hands, Walter is a fully realized character, which I realized when I noticed that I was sympathetic to him (just a little) by the end of the film.
Big Eyes, which is essentially a low-budget independent film, is Tim Burton's first good movie in a few years. With Ed Wood 20 years ago and with Big Eyes now, he shows that he sympathizes and identifies with artists who are off the beaten path, but who take their art as seriously as the “elite” artists. Burton does indeed know how to let the best dramatic actors do some of their best work. While I like a “serious” film (or Burton's version of it) such as Big Eyes, I do want more Tim Burton movies like Beetlejuice and Sleepy Hollow, which are both Oscar-winners, by the way.

Famed Inker, Klaus Janson, Guest of Honor at 2015 Inkwell Awards
(New Bedford, MA/USA) Results from the 8th annual Inkwell Awards will be presented at the inking advocacy group's 5th live awards ceremony this June 19-21, 2015 at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. Legendary ink artist Klaus Janson will be one of the speakers.
“It's exciting and rewarding to celebrate with fans in recognizing the industry’s best ink artists,” said Bob Almond, the non-profit organization’s founder and director. “Since one of the major awards organizations dropped their 'best inker' category years ago and later began awarding 'best penciller/inker team' to individuals, we've been proud to pick up the slack and show the world the vital and varied contributions made by inkers.”
Rather than just “Favorite Inker,” the Inkwells have five categories, including the “Props” award for under-recognized professionals, and the S.P.A.M.I., for favorite Small Press And Mainstream-Independent work. Thousands of voters visited and voted during May at the group’s web site to show their support.
The awards ceremony is scheduled this year for Friday (not Saturday as in the past), June 19 at 5:00 PM in room 209-210. In addition to past Hall of Fame award-winner and guest of honor Klaus Janson, other speakers include host Almond, presenters Mike McKone (Inkwell special ambassador) and Mark McKenna (2012 Sinnott Hall of Fame winner), plus Steve Hampton, Craig Yoe and Orion Zangara. Announced with the award-winners will be the two recipients of the annual Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award and the first recipient of the Special Recognition Award.
Other attendees include Inkwell ambassadors Mark Brooks, Cully Hamner, Laura Martin and Mike McKone, contributors Randy Green, Enrica Jang and Dan Panosian, and more. Also appearing will be the Ms. Inkwell spokesperson character, portrayed this time by Massachusetts model, Holly Black.
As an added bonus, the first 20 non-member attendees will receive a raffle ticket for an automatic door prize. After the event, every ticket holder will win a prize as explained at the ceremony.
The Inkwells will be set up in Artists Alley at table 307, offering for donations their new, 4th annual Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge book and plenty of other Inkwells merchandise to help raise much-needed funds. “We’re immensely grateful to Shelton Drum and the Heroes Con staff for supporting the community and giving fans an opportunity to learn more about and appreciate this often overlooked industry craft.”
The Inkwell Awards is an official 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. Now in its 8th year, the organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and numerous contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.
