National Society of Film Critics Name Michael B. Jordan "Best Actor of 2015;" "Spotlight Named "Best Picture"

The National Society of Film Critics was founded in New York City in 1966 and its membership is currently comprise of 56 of the country’s most prominent movie critics.  Known for their highbrow tastes, these critics form one of the most prestigious film groups on the United States.  Current members include some of my favorite film critics, like David Edelstein and J. Hoberman, among others.  The late Roger Ebert, my favorite critic, was also a member.  The society has produced several anthologies about movies, including the must-have for film fans, Produced and Abandoned: The Best Films You’ve Never Seen (1990).

The National Society of Film Critics gathered on Sunday, January 3, 2016 to vote on their annual film awards.  The group chose Tom McCarthy’s film, Spotlight, as Best Picture of the Year 2015.

"Real Deal Comix" Comes to Fantagraphics Books

MORE RAGE PER PAGE, MORE SLAUGHTER FOR YOUR DOLLAR

The Real Deal Comes to Fantagraphics

SEATTLE, WA—Fantagraphics is proud to announce the complete collection of the provocative Real Deal Comix. The deluxe 176-page hardcover will be released in May 2016.

A vital collection of sociopolitical comics history, Real Deal Comix was inspired by a shared frustration with racial tensions in south central Los Angeles. Creators Lawrence Hubbard (a.k.a. RawDog) and H.P. McElwee (a.k.a. R.D. Bone) created Real Deal Comix in their spare time as an incendiary yet satirical response to the brutality and inequality witnessed firsthand in their community. Dubbing the genre “Urban Chaos,” Hubbard and McElwee tell stories of inner city lives on the precipice, where everyday tasks like filling up a gas tank requires stand-or-back-down survival skills.

With stories depicting life in the hood, Real Deal blends melodrama, Blaxploitation, satire, and legitimate howling rage. Self-published sporadically from 1989 to the present and primarily sold at the annual Comic-Con International in San Diego, Real Deal has achieved cult status over the years (and even inspired a line of Stüssy T-shirts), especially in California’s underground comix scene.

"A Real Deal collection has been a dream of mine for quite some time, and I'm thrilled to work with Fantagraphics to make this happen!” says Real Deal creator Lawrence “Rawdog” Hubbard, who continues to create new Real Deal stories in the wake of co-creator H.P. McElwee’s untimely passing in 1998 from a heart attack.

“I first discovered Real Deal at a San Diego Comic-Con many years ago,” said Fantagraphics Associate Publisher Eric Reynolds. “A new Real Deal became one of the best things to look forward to at SDCC every year. I’m excited to bring the work to a broader audience.”

Hubbard added, “And always remember the Real Deal motto: 'MORE RAGE PER PAGE, MORE SLAUGHTER FOR YOUR DOLLAR!'"

Jim Jarmusch's "Paterson" is Amazon Studios' Next Original Movie

Amazon Studios Announces Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson to be Next Amazon Original Movie

Paterson stars Adam Driver and will be released in theaters in 2016

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ:AMZN)—Amazon Studios today announced that Jim Jarmusch’s "Paterson," starring Adam Driver (Girls) and Golshifteh Farahani (About Elly), will be Amazon’s next original movie. Written and directed by Jarmusch (Only Lovers Left Alive), Paterson is produced by Joshua Astrachan (Louder Than Bombs) and Carter Logan (Only Lovers Left Alive), and executive produced by K5’s Oliver Simon (Get Low) and Daniel Baur (Night Train to Lisbon) and Le Pacte’s Jean LaBadie (Only Lovers Left Alive) and Ron Bozman (Philadelphia). Paterson recently completed principal photography in New Jersey and New York and will debut exclusively in theaters in 2016.

“Adam Driver is one of this generation’s most gifted actors. It’ll be exciting to see what he and Jim unearth as they explore the intimate and richly textured world of Paterson.”

“Paterson is a funny, philosophical and moving story that only Jim can tell. We look forward to working closely with him and supporting his vision in bringing the film to life,” said Ted Hope, Head of Motion Picture Production at Amazon Studios. “Adam Driver is one of this generation’s most gifted actors. It’ll be exciting to see what he and Jim unearth as they explore the intimate and richly textured world of Paterson.”

Added Jim Jarmusch, “I’m very happy to be able to make this film, Paterson, with the support of Amazon, K5, and Le Pacte, and to have their expertise and creativity in delivering our film to audiences around the world. I’m also very happy to collaborate with a wonderful cast and crew.”

Paterson (played by Driver) is a bus driver in the city of Paterson, New Jersey – they share the name. Every day, Paterson adheres to a simple routine: he drives his daily route, observing the city as it drifts across his windshield and overhearing fragments of conversation swirling around him; he writes poetry into a notebook; he walks his dog; he stops in a bar and drinks exactly one beer. He goes home to his wife, Laura (played by Farahani). By contrast, Laura’s world is ever changing. New dreams come to her almost daily, each a different and inspired project. Paterson loves Laura and she loves him. He supports her newfound ambitions; she champions his secret gift for poetry. The history and energy of the City of Paterson is a felt presence in the film and its simple structure unfolds over the course of a single week. The quiet triumphs and defeats of daily life are observed, along with the poetry evident in its smallest details.

Image Comics Anounces New Story Arc for "Shutter"

SHUTTER SETS OUT ON NEW STORY ARC

Writer Joe Keatinge (RINGSIDE, GLORY, TECH JACKET), artist extraordinaire Leila Del Duca, and colorist Owen Gieni (MANIFEST DESTINY) will launch a new story arc in their ongoing globe-trotting urban fantasy series SHUTTER this February.

Praise for SHUTTER:

As in the best fantasy, all the wildly imaginative elements come together to create a story that makes you care.”—“The Best Graphic Novels of 2015” Barnes & Noble Sci-Fi & Fantasy blog

Keatinge and Del Duca have created a contemporary world that teems with casual miracles and feels all the more real and lived in for it."—Booklist (Starred)

"Fun and vibrant, Shutter is a wild ride of a comic"—Entertainment Weekly

Previously in SHUTTER, Kate Kristopher, once the most famous explorer of an Earth far more fantastic than the one we know, was forced to return to the adventurous life she left behind when a family secret threatened to destroy everything she spent her life protecting.

In SHUTTER #18, Kate knows everything—and we don't! The first issue in a new chapter, “All Roads,” that sheds light on the past Kate (and company) tried to leave behind, and where they’re going next.

All roads converge. Not everyone survives the trip.

“Shutter has operated at a breakneck pace of raising questions and expanding the mystery around Kate Kristopher's family, but with ‘All Roads,’ Kate knows the truth behind everything and we take the time to see its dire consequence,” said Keatinge.

“This arc features some never-seen-before backstories involving romance, imaginary friends, and forbidden origami toys, all set in incredible locations around the world!” said Del Duca. “Owen and I have a blast experimenting with new art styles, as per usual, in between our typical textured style, and look forward to having you join the Shutter characters in the next leg of their journey.”

SHUTTER #18 (Diamond code: DEC150549) hits stores Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016. Final order cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, January 11th, 2016.
