"Briggs Land," New Brian Wood Comic Book Being Developed for TV

Brian Wood Launches New Comic Book Series “Briggs Land”, Writes and Produces Potential TV Adaptation

MILWAUKIE, OR— From New York Times best-selling writer Brian Wood (The Massive, Rebels, DMZ, Channel Zero) comes an electrifying crime saga relevant to current world events: Briggs Land.

The new ongoing comic series is set to begin in summer 2016, with interior artist Mack Chater (Ashes, Six), cover artist Tula Lotay (Rebels), and Hugo Award–nominated colorist Lee Loughridge bringing Wood’s script to life on the page.

Wood is also developing a television adaptation of the comic for AMC, serving as writer and executive producer, with producing partners John Hodges and Ravi Nandan at A24.

“AMC and I have been looking for the right thing to work on together for years, and it finally came in the form of Briggs Land, a crime drama set within a rural secessionist community. It’s the culmination of everything I’ve done in my twenty years as a comics creator, bringing socially conscious and politically charged themes to the page, putting some of the more unsettling elements of American culture under scrutiny,” noted Brian Wood. “With AMC I have a much larger canvas to work on, and the ability to design the overall story so the TV show and the comic add to each other.”

A24’s John Hodges and Ravi Nandan added, “We have been avid readers and rabid fans of Brian’s work for some time, and we are thrilled to collaborate with him on translating this exciting new property to the screen for AMC, which continues to define itself by championing bold and unique voices.”

The series tells the story of Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness that harbors the largest and most secretive antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. When matriarch Grace Briggs wrests control of the operation from her incarcerated husband, she sparks a war within the community—and her immediate family—that threatens to bring the full power of the federal government down on their heads.

Briggs Land #1 is in stores August 17, 2016.

Praise for other works by Brian Wood:

One of the best character writers in the industry.”—IGN

[Northlanders is] another creative victory for writer Wood, who’s quickly emerging as one [of] the medium’s premier scribes.”—Entertainment Weekly

"March" Graphic Novels Marching Into New York City School

John Lewis Brings Graphic Novel Education to NYC Schools

NEW YORK — When John Lewis was a college student in Nashville, Tennessee, he attended a workshop on nonviolence that changed his life. Based on the principles of Gandhi and the recent Montgomery Bus Boycott, it also included a comic book — Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story — as a take-home study aid in nonviolent resistance. “That little book became like a Bible for us,” says Lewis.

Fifty years later, he teamed with co-writer Andrew Aydin and artist Nate Powell to adapt his own incredible life story into a series of award-winning graphic novels, entitled MARCH. The MARCH series is a #1 NYT-bestselling phenomenon, earning a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, becoming a popular selection for university reading programs, and prompting the Washington Post to write, "There is perhaps no more important modern book to be stocked in American school libraries than MARCH."

Now, this groundbreaking graphic novel series reaches the nation’s largest public school system. Congressman Lewis and his MARCH co-creators, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell, visited New York City today to address hundreds of the city’s social studies teachers about teaching the civil rights movement and their graphic novel series, which is being added to “Passport to Social Studies,” an expansive new curriculum developed by the New York City Department of Education. Students study the civil rights movement in the 8th grade, and now, teachers may choose to utilize lessons developed by the Department of Social Studies that feature scenes from MARCH, to discuss milestones such as John Lewis's speech at the 1963 March on Washington.

In today's session, New York's teachers had a rare opportunity to hear from a seminal figure of history whose story is vitally relevant to the modern day — and who now presents that story in a powerful new format for engaging today's students.

Teachers across the country, at every grade level, have embraced MARCH as a dynamic and powerful visual testimony of the civil rights movement, narrated by one of its major figures. For example:

  •     "MARCH has become essential reading in my courses... From the poignancy of Lewis’ childhood sermons with the family chickens to the courage of Freedom Riders nearly trapped inside a burning bus, each panel of MARCH rewards close readers, inviting analysis and critical reflection." — Qiana Whitted, University of South Carolina

  •     “MARCH brings the African American freedom struggle to life as no other memoir can. Told through the lens of Lewis’s remarkable biography, MARCH encapsulates many of the most important themes of the Civil Rights Movement, and American history more generally. Students at all levels will find that the vivid illustrations and quick pace make the narrative exciting to read, while also allowing for in-depth understandings about the complicated themes of race, equality, and perseverance in twentieth-century America. Nate Powell’s lines remain true to the horrific reality of U.S. history, while somehow highlighting people’s agency and humanity in the face of American racism and violence.” — Dave Gilbert, Mars Hill University

  •     "I have never had to ask students to put books down before, until MARCH." — Judith Marks, Olney Charter High School, Philadelphia, PA

Image Comics Announces Second Printing for "Renato Jones: The One%"

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% STRIKES AGAIN

Issue #1 is fast-tracked to a second printing

“Nobody else makes comic books quite like Kaare Andrews.” —Nerdist

Critically-acclaimed writer/artist/director Kaare Kyle Andrews (Spider-Man: Reign, Iron Fist: The Living Weapon) has taken the comics industry by storm with his next-level action thriller RENATO JONES: THE ONE%. In order to keep up with customer demand, Image Comics is pleased to announce that RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1 is being rushed to a second printing.

In RENATO JONES: THE ONE %, society’s upper one percent own more than half the world’s wealth. They’ve crashed economies, bought governments, and have amassed more power than any other group in history. And they still don’t have enough. With this kind of power how can anyone make them pay? WHO will make them pay? Enter Renato Jones, a mysterious vigilante, out to even the score. And when he enters the fray THE SUPER-RICH ARE SUPER F***ED.

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1 remains available for purchase across all digital platforms, including the Image Comics website (imagecomics.com), the official Image Comics iOS app, Comixology’s website (comixology.com), iOS, Android, and Google Play.

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #1, 2nd printing (Diamond Code MAR169020) will arrive in stores on Wednesday, June 1st, 2016. The Final Order Cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, May 9th, 2016.

RENATO JONES: THE ONE% #2 (Diamond Code APR160770) will hit stores on Wednesday, June 8th, 2016. The final order cutoff deadline for retailers is Monday, May 16th, 2016.

Select praise for RENATO JONES: THE ONE%:

"A sort of hallucinatory rage pop 'Punisher from Occupy.' It's gorgeous and also demented." —Warren Ellis

A true showcase for what one creator can accomplish when they script, draw, ink and color their own book.” —IGN

If Kaare Andrews is drawing a comic book, we will be reading that comic book. We’re sticking with this series, because nobody in modern comics lays out a page like Andrews. Nobody else brings the energy and life he delivers on every page. Nobody else makes comic books quite like Kaare Andrews, and that’s the way we like it.” —Nerdist

I can comfortably say Renato Jones: The One% has ticked most of the boxes it needs to in all of its thirty-five pages. Tech that makes its wearer superhumanly strong? Check. Gold Lamborghinis? Check. Orgies and stupendously rich, entitled douche-bags? Check. A protagonist who’s quietly dangerous and effortlessly cool at the same time? Check. This is the exact thing you’d get if you could somehow convert a flipped, sticky-from-champagne middle finger into a comic book.” —Bleeding Cool

BET Adds New Cast Members to "New Edition" Miniseries

Just in Time for Mother’s Day BET Networks Announces More Casting News for Its NEW EDITION: THE MOVIE Miniseries

La La Anthony, Yvette Nicole Brown, Monica Calhoun, Lisa Nicole Carson and Sandi McCree Join the Biopic to Play the Mothers of the Iconic Music Group New Edition

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BET Networks announces new cast additions to its much-anticipated original three-part miniseries NEW EDITION: THE MOVIE. La La Anthony (Power), Yvette Nicole Brown (The Office; The New Odd Couple), Monica Calhoun (The Best Man), Lisa Nicole Carson (Ally McBeal) and Sandi McCree (The Wire) have joined the cast to play the mothers of the iconic music group New Edition. Written by Abdul Williams (Lottery Ticket) and executive produced by Jesse Collins (Real Husbands of Hollywood) for JCE Films, a division of Jesse Collins Entertainment, the three-night miniseries event is scheduled to premiere on BET in 2017. Principal photography is currently underway in Los Angeles.

  •     La La Anthony will play Ronnie DeVoe’s mother Flo DeVoe.
  •     Yvette Nicole Brown will play Michael Bivins’ mother Shirley Bivins.
  •     Monica Calhoun will play Ralph Tresvant’s mother Patricia Tresvant.
  •     Lisa Nicole Carson will play Ricky Bell’s mother Mae Bell.
  •     Sandi McCree will play Bobby Brown’s mother Carole Brown.

The ladies join previously announced NEW EDITION: THE MOVIE cast Bryshere Y. Gray (Empire), Elijah Kelley (The Butler, The Wiz Live!), Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Luke James, Keith Powers (Straight Outta Compton) and newcomers Algee Smith and Woody McClain.

New Edition laid the foundation for how modern-day boy bands look, feel, and sound. Boyz II Men, N’SYNC, The Backstreet Boys, and New Kids On The Block all took their cues from Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny. After 30 years of breaking hearts on the record and from the stage, New Edition finally gets the biopic that their stellar tenure in entertainment so richly deserves. This three-part miniseries follows the group from their humble beginnings as kids in Boston to global megastardom - weathering the highs and lows of controversy, personnel changes, and the ultimate cost of fame.

NEW EDITION: THE MOVIE is executive produced by Jesse Collins (Real Husbands of Hollywood) for JCE Films, a division of Jesse Collins Entertainment; directed by Chris Robinson (ATL) and co-produced by Brooke Payne, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ronnie DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown.
