Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez to revive their beloved series
SEATTLE, WA–– Fantagraphics Books is proud to announce that Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez’s beloved Love and Rockets will return this fall in the same magazine format that fans fell in love with during its original 50 issue run from 1982-1996. Love and Rockets has been Fantagraphics’ flagship publication since its initial magazine debut in 1982, and the new series (Vol. IV, for those keeping track) will launch on the eve of the title’s 35th anniversary in September 2016 and continue every four months thereafter. The new format and schedule comes after a decade of the Love and Rockets: New Stories annual.
The Love and Rockets stories by brothers Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez continue to hold a firm grasp on the imaginations of several generations of comic book fans, garnering multiple Eisner and Ignatz Awards in recent years for their work on New Stories. Meanwhile, the collected Love and Rockets trade paperbacks continue to be perennial best sellers for Fantagraphics, with 11 volumes to date.
The new Love and Rockets marks Gilbert and Jaime’s return to the “floppy” format for the first time in a decade and will measure 8 ½” x 10 ¾”, with at least 32 pages per issue, retailing at $4.99.
“Over the past few years, Gilbert and Jaime had each casually mentioned more than once that it might be fun to try their hand at a regular comic book series again after a decade of creating the new annual every year,” said Fantagraphics Associate Publisher Eric Reynolds. “Gilbert joked at one point that he would simply love to be able to draw more covers — with he and Jaime trading covers, he was only creating one new L&R cover every two years! We agreed that something needed to be done about this, and we’re very excited to return L&R to its comic book roots.”
The new format will play to the strengths of master cartoonists Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, focusing on their diverse cast of characters and the rich milieus they have established over the past three-and-a-half decades: from Jaime’s Maggie and Hopey to Gilbert’s Luba and Fritz, old and new fans alike will be able to enjoy two of the great bodies of work in comics history, under one cover.

Nightcrawler is a 2014 neo-Noir drama and crime-thriller from writer-director Dan Gilroy. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the film focuses on a Los Angeles man who enters the world of freelance video journalism and then begins to manipulate events in order to create more lurid stories.
Nightcrawler opens in Los Angeles. It introduces Louis “Lou” Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a thief always looking to convert his stolen merchandise into quick cash. One night, Bloom is driving back to his apartment when he comes across the scene of a car crash. He pulls over to witness the chaos, but most of his attention is taken by the “Stringers,” freelance cameramen who are filming live footage of the crash scene with the intent of selling that video footage to local television news stations.
Fascinated and inspired, Bloom buys his first camcorder and a police radio scanner and begins driving the streets of L.A. at night. He looks for accidents, emergencies, and crime scenes that he can film. He makes his first sale to KWLA, a bottom-rung television station, where he catches the notice of the station's morning news director, Nina Romina (Rene Russo). As he muscles his way into the world of L.A. crime journalism, however, Bloom's dark side quickly emerges.
On the surface, Nightcrawler might seem like it is only a slick crime film, especially because of Robert Elswit's gorgeous cinematography. What writer-director Dan Gilroy also offers, however, is a mean, edgy film that is classic L.A. crime story. This film is high-quality neo-Noir that recaptures the classic, black and white L.A. Film-Noir, without being a prisoner to style and expectations.
Nightcrawler might not be the excellent film it is without Jake Gyllenhaal's marvelous performance as the sociopathic and murderously ambitious Lou Bloom. It is now official; doubting that Gyllenhaal is a supremely talented and skilled actor is no longer okay. I must also throw some cheer Rene Russo's way. Hell, yeah, she's good, but Hollywood industry ageism now keeps her away from audiences. She takes a throwaway character like Nina and makes her crucial to the execution of the narrative. Also, I must not forget Riz Ahmed. As Rick, Bloom's desperate-for-money assistant, Ahmed delivers a star-turn that just comes out of nowhere.
It might be easy to focus on Louis Bloom's sociopathic tendencies; one might call him an outright sociopath. However, I think Nightcrawler speaks to the world that creates the Lou Blooms. The world of L.A. local television news is little better than rogue capitalism. The movie is rife with characters that are me-first and win-at-all-costs, to say nothing of the anal obsession with acknowledging achievement that comes from literally walking over dead bodies.
Nightcrawler is not perfect; some of it seems a bit far-fetched. Louis Bloom gets away with things that stretch credulity, although I won't be specific in order to avoid spoilers. Still, I was destined to like Nightcrawler because I like neo-Noir set in Los Angeles. I think that what makes Nightcrawler so fascinating to watch are the things that sometimes make it hard to watch. Dan Gilroy's gem is blunt about a morally bankrupt society in which class status is everything and in which society treats actual people as nothing more than commodities.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA Los Angeles) is pleased to announce it will honor award-winning actor Samuel L. Jackson with the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment at this year’s British Academy Britannia Awards.
The annual gala celebration will take place on Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Jackson will appear in David Yates’ “Tarzan,” starring alongside Alexander Skarsgård, Margot Robbie and Christoph Waltz this July as well as Tim Burton’s “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” which will release in September. Most recently, he completed production on the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures film “Kong: Skull Island” and is currently in production on Lionsgate’s “Hitman’s Bodyguard” with Ryan Reynolds and Gary Oldman.
In 2012, he co-starred in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” as ‘Stephen,’ with Christoph Waltz, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio. He also starred in “The Avengers,” which is part of his 9-picture deal with Marvel Studios. The highly anticipated film opened on May 4, 2012 to a record breaking $200 million opening weekend.
Jackson reprised his role as ‘Nick Fury’ in both Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which was released in April 2014, and the 2015 sequel “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.” In February 2015, he starred alongside Colin Firth and Taron Egerton in Matthew Vaughn’s “Kingsman: The Secret Service.”
Jackson made his Broadway debut in 2011 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater in “The Mountaintop,” where he portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. The play also starred Angela Bassett and was directed by Kenny Leon.
Jackson’s career began onstage upon his graduation from Morehouse College in Atlanta with a degree in dramatic arts. Among the plays were Home, A Soldier’s Play, Sally/Prince and The District Line. He also originated roles in two of August Wilson’s plays at Yale Repertory Theatre. For the New York Shakespeare Festival, Jackson appeared in Mother Courage and Her Children, Spell #7, and The Mighty Gents.

On the small screen, Jackson served as Executive Producer for the Spike TV animated series, “Afro Samurai” which premiered in 2007. The series received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Animated Program from the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences. The first edition of the “Afro Samurai” video game launched in February 2009.
On television, in addition to “The Sunset Limited,” Jackson starred in John Frankenheimer’s Emmy Award-winning “Against the Wall” for HBO. His performance earned him a Cable Ace nomination as Best Supporting Actor in a Movie or Miniseries, as well as a Golden Globe nomination.
The 2015 ceremony took place in October at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Harrison Ford received the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Entertainment, Orlando Bloom received the Britannia Humanitarian Award presented by the Beazley Group, Meryl Streep received the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film, Sam Mendes received the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing presented by the GREAT Britain campaign, James Corden received the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year presented by Burberry and Amy Schumer received the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy presented by Kodak.
