I Reads You Review - "DC COMICS PRESENTS: Batman"
DC COMICS PRESENTS: BATMAN - An I Reads You Review
DC COMICS – @DCComics

WRITERS: Geoff Johns; Len Wein
PENCILS: Carmine Infantino; Andy Kuhn
INKS: Joe Giella; Andy Kuhn
COLORS: Sno Cone; Bill Crabtree
LETTERS: Kurt Hathaway
MISC. ART: Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella
COVER: Adam Hughes
32pp, Color, $2.50 U.S., $3.85 CAN (September 2004)
Batman created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger
That late Julius “Julie” Schwartz (1915-2004) was known for his long association with DC Comics, where he was a longtime editor and guiding force. For a time, he was the primary editor of DC Comics' flagship franchises, Superman and Batman. Schwartz was also one of the earliest science fiction literary agents (being a co-founder of Solar Sales Service, a literary agency) and was basically one of the founders of early science fiction fandom.
After he died in February 2004, DC Comics created a short publishing event, the DC Comics Presents Specials, to celebrate Schwartz's contributions to the publisher. There were eight DC Comics Presents comic books in all, each one bearing a bullet-logo comprised of a cartoon portrait of Schwartz and emblazoned with the words, “A Julie Schwartz Tribute.”
Apparently, one of the hallmarks of Schwartz's editorial and creative vision was to conceive imaginative covers that would serve as springboards for DC Comics writers in need of story ideas. For these DC Comics Presents Specials, classic Schwartz “concept covers” were used to inspire new stories produced by creative teams that either worked with Schwartz or were inspired by his work. Each DC Comics Presents Special was a stand-alone comic book and contained two stories. Each comic book also featured a cover that re-interpreted, re-drew, or was inspired by a “concept cover.”
DC Comics Presents: Batman featured two stories inspired by the cover of Batman #183, which was drawn by Carmine Infantino (pencils) and Joe Giella (inks). DC Comics Presents: Batman also sports a modern take on Batman #183's cover, as drawn by Adam Hughes.
The first story is “Batman of Two Worlds” and is drawn by Infantino and Giella who drew the cover art for Batman #183. Written by Geoff Johns, the story finds Batman and Robin always bickering... until Batman kills Robin! No worries though, this Batman and Robin are fictional, the stars of a scripted television series based on the real Dynamic Duo. When the real Caped Crusaders start investigating this strange Bat-case, they find that everything is not what it seems.
Then, writer Len Wein and artist Andy Kuhn take Batman to television again in “The Ratings War!” The hottest show in Gotham City is “The Real Adventures of Batman and Robin.” In fact, this reality series is about the real Dynamic Duo, because its cameras capture Batman and Robin live and in action across Gotham City. And this show has taken bottom-feeding television station WGTM to the top of the ratings heap. So how does WGTM know when and where Batman and Robin will be in action?
DC Comics Presents: Batman made for pleasant reading. “Batman of Two Worlds” is the kind of simple, straight-forward story that would have fit right into almost any issue of 1960s era Batman or Detective Comics. In fact, the 1960s where when Carmine Infantino (with inker Joe Giella) was producing what would be a hugely-influential run of Batman comic book cover and interior art for both Batman and Detective Comics. However, Gardner Fox wrote many of the stories drawn by Infantino, and disappointingly, Geoff John's “Batman of Two Worlds” is a mere shadow of Gardner Fox's imaginative Batman tales of the 1960s.
Of the two stories, I prefer “The Ratings War!,” which I find truer to the spirit of Gardner Fox. Yet it has a timeless quality. The scenario for “The Rating War!” would be plausible (relatively speaking) in the 1960s. Obviously, this story probably makes more sense today, especially because the last three decades have seen countless reality TV series that follow “real-life” law enforcement on the job, in the courtroom, and behind the scenes.
I could be cynical and say that this Julie Schwartz tribute is as much about selling comic books as it is about remembering a DC Comics luminary, and I'd be right. There is a reason that when DC released this back in 2004, it threw around the names of the fan-favorite comics creators that were contributing to this “tribute.” That reason is sales.
Why did I buy the comic books that comprise this series? Well, I bought them because they are connected to Silver Age DC Comics. I will buy pastiches and tributes to Silver Age DC almost as quickly as I will buy actual reprints of Silver Age DC. And I like DC Comics Presents: Batman for what it reminds me of more than for what it actually is.
[This comic book contains an obituary of Julius Schwartz, “Softly: A Living Legend Passes,” written by Harlan Ellison with Brian M. Thomsen.]

"One-Punch Man" Anime Arrives on Adult Swim's Toonami
VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES THE BROADCAST PREMIERE OF ONE-PUNCH MAN ANIME SERIES ON ADULT SWIM
Action Anime Series About A Superhero With A Knockout Punch, Based On Smash Hit Manga Title, Premieres On North American TV Later This Month
San Francisco, CA – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, has announced the North American broadcast debut of ONE-PUNCH MAN on Adult Swim’s Toonami. VIZ Media and Adult Swim’s Toonami team made the announcement before a packed audience of fans at the nation’s largest anime convention – Anime Expo – held this past weekend in Los Angeles.
The action adventure about an uncanny superhero with a knockout punch is scheduled to premiere on July 16th, 2016 (time to be announced), with future episodes set to air each Saturday. Toonami is the anime programming block on Adult Swim, Turner’s network offering original and acquired animated and live-action series for young adults.
“One-Punch Man is a one of a kind show and we’re excited to have it join our Toonami line-up,” said Jason DeMarco, senior vice president and creative director, on-air for Adult Swim. “We know our viewers have been hoping this would happen for a while, and we're thrilled to have been able to make it happen!”
ONE-PUNCH MAN is based on the bestselling manga series (the latest chapters serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, and graphic novels published by VIZ Media; rated ‘T for Teens), created by writer ONE and artist Yusuke Murata. The anime series was animated by the renowned Japanese studio, Madhouse, and helmed by famed anime director, Shingo Natsume, (Space Dandy, Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos), and features character designs by Chikashi Kubota (From the New World, Robotics:notes). For its broadcast premiere on Toonami, ONE-PUNCH MAN will feature a notable cast of English voice actors including Max Mittelman (as Saitama), Zach Aguilar (as Genos), Robbie Daymond (as Mumen Rider) and Erik Kimerer (as Speed-o’-Sound Sonic).
“With its compelling characters, high-energy animation and contemporary spin on the classic superhero premise, ONE-PUNCH MAN is a bombastic action tale unlike any anime series that has come before,” says Charlene Ingram, Senior Marketing Manager, Animation. “Don’t miss the premiere on Adult Swim later this month!”
In ONE-PUNCH MAN, Saitama only became a hero for fun, but after three years of “special” training, he finds that he can beat even the mightiest opponents with a single punch. Though he faces new enemies every day, it turns out being devastatingly powerful is actually kind of a bore. Can a hero be too strong?
VIZ Media is the official North American distributor of the ONE-PUNCH MAN anime and manga properties and holds the digital and print publishing rights as well as broadcast rights, digital streaming rights, home video rights and master merchandising rights to the series.
For additional information on ONE-PUNCH MAN and other anime and manga titles distributed and published by VIZ Media, please visit www.VIZ.com.

ThunderCats to Roar with He-Man and Masters of the Universe This Fall
MATTEL AND DC PRESENT HE-MAN/THUNDERCATS
The Power of Grayskull and The Sword of Omens Collide this October
It’s the epic crossover event 30 years in the making! He-Man and the Masters of the Universe team up with the ThunderCats to make comic book and pop culture history! Scheduled to debut in October and published by DC Entertainment, this monthly miniseries will embroil heroes and villains—Masters, Mutants and ThunderCats—in a mind-blowing six-part comic book saga!
The story will be brought to life by the writing team of Mattel Head Writer and Masters of the Universe Lead Creative Rob David and Supervising Producer Lloyd Goldfine, with all-star artist Freddie E. Williams II (Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) handling interiors and cover art.
"The Masters of the Universe and the ThunderCats are both global phenomena, beloved by millions. Teaming them up for one enormous story will prove to be a publishing event that fans simply cannot miss. This is something that transcends both comic book and pop culture," said DC Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras.
"For everyone out there who took different action figures and teamed them up to take on the world, this one’s for you," said co-writer Rob David, who recently wrote the storyline for the critically acclaimed He-Man: the Eternity War, published by DC Entertainment in 2015.
"Writing this crossover event is the thrill of a lifetime, and Rob and I can’t wait to get started," added co-writer Lloyd Goldfine. "You don’t wait 30 years and not go big!"
In his eternal desire to destroy the mighty ThunderCats, the evil Mumm-Ra quests for a weapon that can rival the legendary Sword of Omens: He-Man’s Sword of Power! But his dimension-spanning scheme launches a cataclysmic crisis that will, for the first time ever, unite Lion-O, Cheetara, Tygra, Panthro, WilyKit and WilyKat with He-Man, Battlecat, Teela, Man-At-Arms and the rest of the Masters of the Universe.
"The Power of Grayskull and the Great Eye of Thundera have aligned to make me the luckiest guy on all the earths!" explained artist Freddie E. Williams II. "He-Man and ThunderCats were my life when I was in grade school—family and friends knew I loved both cartoons so much. I used to pause episodes and draw from them, since they were so awesome. The He-Man/ThunderCats crossover is the fulfillment of a lifelong goal and my fanboy dream come true! I'm having a blast!"
HE-MAN/THUNDERCATS #1 debuts October 5, 2016.
