Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Invites New Members - Documentary, Short Film, Animation

ACADEMY INVITES 683 TO MEMBERSHIP

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 683 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2016.

18 individuals (noted by an asterisk) have been invited to join the Academy by multiple branches. These individuals must select one branch upon accepting membership.

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in the fall.

National Geographic Channel Announces Airdate for Season 2 of Years of Living Dangerously and Releases First Trailer

Produced in collaboration with The Years Project, Years of Living Dangerously once again features some of Hollywood’s biggest influencers who are passionate about environmental issues, and it reveals emotional and hard-hitting accounts of the effects of climate change from across the planet.

The full list of season two correspondents includes Jack Black, Gisele Bündchen, Ty Burrell, Don Cheadle, America Ferrera, Thomas Friedman, Joshua Jackson, David Letterman, Aasif Mandvi, Nikki Reed, executive producer Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ian Somerhalder, Cecily Strong, Sigourney Weaver and Bradley Whitford. They give first-person accounts from locations — some shockingly close to home, others in far-flung corners of the globe — where the effects of climate change are most prevalent. They cover crucial issues, like severe hurricanes, deforestation, the solar energy crisis, climate migrants, historic droughts and the rapidly increasing extinction rate of our planet’s wildlife. The energy market has an estimated global value of $6 trillion — a number that could be greatly affected by an increase in renewable sources, especially solar. In his first television project since retiring as host of CBS’s “The Late Show,” David Letterman travels to India for the first time to find out what the world’s soon-to-be most populous country is going to do to expand its inadequate energy grid, power its booming economy and bring basic electricity to 300 million citizens who have never plugged in. Letterman interviews the prime minister, travels to rural villages where power is a luxury few can afford and finds out why the U.S. may play a key role in India’s energy future. “Saturday Night Live” cast member Cecily Strong travels to Florida and Nevada to investigate what’s blocking the growth of solar energy in the U.S. — and she gets the real story from industry insiders and a retired commissioner now willing to tell their stories.

If nothing is done to curb carbon emissions, Miami is in danger of being underwater by the end of the century. Jack Black is there to find out if and how the city and other low-lying coastal areas can survive rising seas. He finds a political and business community in denial and talks to a few lone legislators, residents, activists and scientists trying to do something before it’s too late. Ian Somerhalder journeys to the Bahamas to investigate the future threat of superstorms, caused by rising sea temperatures, whose devastating effects could reach biblical proportions. At the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, he joins scientists on a deep dive to explore blue holes, underwater caves that have collected the remnants of past storms for centuries.

Years of Living Dangerously: The Battle in the Woods (wt)

The battle to save the Amazon in Brazil — the “lungs of the planet” — is the ultimate race against time. There are ever-increasing threats from cattle ranching, drought, deforestation, massive hydroelectric dams and illegal mining. Supermodel and activist Gisele Bündchen travels to her home country to see the extent of the damage and investigates what’s being done to save the rainforest for all of us. Deep in the Amazon, she joins the national environmental police on a mission to put an end to illegal deforestation; in Alta Floresta, she meets with Greenpeace for a flyover of the forest, which reveals huge patches of deforested land, logs piled high on trucks and barges, drought-stricken fields, burnt rainforests and vast cattle ranches that were once lush, thousand-year-old tropical rainforests.

Premieres Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 10/9c

Almost one-fifth of all carbon emissions in the world come from the transportation sector. Actor Ty Burrell takes to the road to see the environmental revolutions being made in electric vehicles (EVs) and automated vehicles (AVs). Burrell visits Silicon Valley to learn about AV advancements and hear how big automakers are pouring major capital into AV technology. In Atlanta, where some of the country’s most generous EV incentives were recently killed, Burrell makes a visit to see the effects and hear firsthand from EV advocates. Action hero, politician, climate crusader and Years of Living Dangerously executive producer Arnold Schwarzenegger sets out to explore the military’s relationship with a changing climate, including how our armed forces are dealing with an increasing number of climate-related disasters and how the military is working to reduce its own carbon footprint. Schwarzenegger travels to Kuwait to visit soldiers and travel in a fuel convoy (where more than 3,000 soldiers have been killed or injured since 9/11). He learns how serious a threat the military perceives climate change to be, talks to top-level military leaders and meets the brave men and women who are dealing with climate change threats and disasters on the front lines.

Years of Living Dangerously: The Uprooted (wt)
Featuring Tom Friedman and Don Cheadle
Premieres Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 10/9c

New York Times columnist Tom Friedman investigates the increasing population of climate refugees — migrants forced to leave their homes due to climate change-induced sea-level rise, natural disasters and destroyed livelihoods. He travels from the COP21 climate conference in Paris to the Sahel region of a parched and war-torn Africa, where he hears from refugees themselves. He explores this new wave and what the future may bring. Actor Don Cheadle is on the ground in California, where the worst drought in 1,200 years is devastating the nation’s most populous state and the world’s seventh-largest economy. He investigates how Gov. Jerry Brown’s administration is fighting the drought while also fighting climate change. Along the way, Cheadle meets a scientist who warns of a global water and food crisis as well as a family of farmers whose lives may never be the same as they struggle to find water in the parched Central Valley.

Years of Living Dangerously: Warming and Winning (wt)
Featuring Joshua Jackson and Nikki Reed
Premieres Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 10/9c

Joshua Jackson investigates the one place on Earth where the impacts of climate change are most profound yet practically invisible: the oceans. Josh travels to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to look at the devastating impacts of ocean warming on the world’s largest reef system, and he explores the predicted impact of ocean acidification. In the Philippines, he looks at the impact of climate change in a place where hundreds of millions of people rely on healthy reefs for food, income and protection from storms. Actress and activist Nikki Reed explores what some believe to be the ultimate solution for climate change: putting a price on carbon. She joins a group of passionate students at Ponoma College in Southern California on a mission to put it into action and travels to Vancouver, a carbon-pricing success story, for a sit-down with the mayor.

Years of Living Dangerously: Saving What’s Left (wt)

Premieres Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 10/9c

Animal species around the world are disappearing at an alarming rate, and climate change is only worsening the trend. Former “Daily Show” correspondent Aasif Mandvi sets off on a quest to understand just how much of a threat climate change poses to endangered species. He travels to Kenya’s wildlife preserves to meet the people on the front lines of conservation efforts, discovering that increased drought and irregular rainfall are compounding poaching and loss of habitat. Meanwhile, “West Wing” star Bradley Whitford travels to Capitol Hill to explore the growing movement to get Republicans to admit that climate change is real and to commit to doing something about it. He tells the story of Jay Butera, who has spent the past 10 years lobbying Republicans on climate. For Butera, it’s not about brow-beating lawmakers with facts; it’s about providing solutions they can get behind to forge a bipartisan majority to act. Whitford follows Butera and some of the members of Congress he’s convinced, to see if this movement can be sustained.

Even though coal plants are shutting down across the country, coal remains a major source of energy, and burning it emits toxic pollutants and climate-altering carbon dioxide. America Ferrera journeys to Illinois, where a still-functioning coal plant is creating tension between those who want to shut it down and those — like the local mayor — who want to keep it open. She meets a group of activists fighting hard to close it in favor of an option that can provide clean energy and green jobs. Sigourney Weaver explores China’s explosive economic growth and the impact it is having on the environment not just locally but on a massive global scale. In New York, she sits down with the former U.S. ambassador to China before traveling to Hong Kong and China to see whether the world’s biggest polluter is fulfilling promises to reduce emissions — even as its populations and industry continue to grow.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association Continues Support for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles

Hollywood Foreign Press Association® Awards $25,000 Grant to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to Expand Entertainment Industry’s Role in Helping Heal Patients through the Arts

The Hospital's Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program Uses the Power of Art, Music, Dance and Drama to Help Patients Face Life-threatening Illness or Injury with Renewed Hope and Inspiration

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is continuing its support for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) with its second $25,000 grant to drive collaboration between the entertainment community and the hospital’s Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program. Facilitated by certified expressive arts therapists and partners in the community, the Artists Program uses music, dance, drama and the expressive arts to address the unique physical and emotional challenges faced by hospitalized infants, children, teens and young adults. The grant brings the HFPA’s total commitment to the Artists Program to $50,000.

“The result of two industries coming together for one cause is powerful, moving and inspiring. The HFPA is in awe of the hospital’s staff and the great lengths they go to every day to put a smile on a child’s face.”

In partnership with the hospital’s Hollywood Cares for Kids™ program, the Artists Program will utilize the grant to integrate professionals and artists in the entertainment industry into the program, drawing upon their distinct skillset to inspire, encourage and help patients through their medical journey. For example:

professional animators can teach young patients about communicating through the limitless world of cartoons;
filmmakers can introduce young people to the power of narrative storytelling;
writers and composers can help the shyest of patients find their inner voice through one-on-one song writing sessions with their music therapist;
musical artists can provide private music performances and engage in art and music workshops.

“CHLA is committed to treating the whole child, recognizing the critical role that a child’s spirit plays in the course of healing,” said Alex Field, manager, Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program. “Through drama, music, dance, and the visual and expressive arts, we help children find ways to convey their emotions, ask questions they have not found the words to ask and feel a bit more in control of their lives. Young people can also discover a new talent, develop a new interest, or enjoy a form of art they have never experienced before, creating a budding life-long appreciation for the arts.”

CHLA was one of the many non-profits that benefited from the nearly $2.4 million dollars gifted on Aug. 4, 2016 by the HFPA, the organization widely known for hosting the Golden Globe Awards. The group annually donates grants to causes and efforts that the HFPA is committed to supporting, including entertainment-related non-profits, foundations and schools.

“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association unreservedly gives this grant to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to help nurture the relationship they have with the entertainment industry,” said HFPA President Lorenzo Soria. “The result of two industries coming together for one cause is powerful, moving and inspiring. The HFPA is in awe of the hospital’s staff and the great lengths they go to every day to put a smile on a child’s face.”

“The entertainment community has the capacity in many unique ways to positively impact the children we serve,” said Lyndsay Hutchison, director, Hollywood Cares for Kids program. “Whether the child is an aspiring artist or just facing a very tough road ahead, having the chance to work with an industry professional brings a level of encouragement and renewed excitement. From writers to animators to musicians and actors, the entertainment community offers a wide array of expertise in their respective fields, providing a tremendous asset in helping children find their voice.”

In addition to their emotional impact, the Artists Program has a physiological effect on children that contributes to healing. Research has shown that heart rates slow, blood pressure decreases, and the perception of pain declines when patients pick up a musical instrument, sing a song or see a live performance up close. In the hospital’s Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit, staff members have reported the slowing of heart and pulse rates in premature infants upon the first musical note they hear, and mothers have found a new way to bond with babies they cannot yet hold by simply singing to them. At CHLA, the arts are indispensable to the therapeutic process, facilitating recovery and rehabilitation.

Established in 1901 as Southern California’s first hospital dedicated to the care of children, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has grown alongside the Hollywood community for more than a century. Baltimore Comic-Con Brings Veteran Creators, New Projects

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel, the creative pioneers who launched Blood of the Innocent, Mars, and numerous other creations, will explore things a little closer to home with their appearance at the Baltimore Comic-Con, September 2-4, 2016 at the Baltimore Convention Center. This is the seventeenth annual Baltimore Comic-Con and this marks Insight Studios Groups' sixteenth straight appearance at the show. They will be joined by studio mates Jerry Carr, G.D. Despite vibrant and incredibly varied solo careers, Mark Wheatley and Marc Hempel have been frequent, highly successful collaborators. Their work together has included Tarzan, Jonny Quest, Titanic Tales, and Doctor Cyborg, among other projects. They are presently at work on a fully restored and lavishly produced re-issue of their acclaimed graphic novel Breathtaker for Titan Comics as well as a touring show of the original art organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum. Long out of print, it was originally serialized and then collected into a best selling trade paperback by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint 20 years ago. Their work, both together and separately, was extensively profiled in IS Art: The Art of Insight Studios.

"Even with the addition of some stellar media guests, the Baltimore Comic-Con remains one of the most staunchly comic-centric conventions on the circuit. Of course we're favorably predisposed to our hometown show, but it's so much more than just regional pride. The guest list just can't be beat by any other show of this size or even many that are quite a bit bigger," said Mark Wheatley. On his own, Wheatley has most recently had his work for CBS Television featured on The Millers, 2 Broke Girls, and Super Clyde, and the Square Roots pilot for ABC. In print his work has been featured in the acclaimed Jungle Tales Of Tarzan from Dark Horse Comics, on the cover of the Meteor House release of Exiles Of Kho, the Phillip Jose Farmer series novel by Christopher Paul Carey, and his own well-received art book, Stars, which presents elaborate line art portraits of actors, musicians, and authors.

With a track record that includes Frankenstein Mobster, Radical Dreamer, Return of the Human, Hammer of the Gods, EZ Street, Skultar, and Lone Justice, Wheatley is an Inkpot, Mucker, Gem, Speakeasy, and Eisner award-winning creator. He has lectured at the Library of Congress, exhibited at the Norman Rockwell Museum, created set pieces for The Black Eyed Peas, designed for Lady Gaga, and contributed designs to ABC's Beauty and the Beast. He will be displaying art from Doctor Cthulittle, his innovative new project in collaboration with studio members G.D. Falksen and Evelyn Kriete.

Marc Hempel, grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and now resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where he plies his craft on such diverse projects ranging from his own Gregory, Tug & Buster, and Naked Brain to Disney Adventures, and from Clive Barker's Hellraiser to "The Kindly Ones" in Neil Gaiman's The Sandman. Hempel's art has also appeared in MAD, Marvel Fanfare, Epic Illustrated, Heavy Metal, Flinch, My Faith in Frankie, The Dreaming, Lucifer, Munden's Bar, Nickelodeon Magazine, and a 21-page Escapist story for Dark Horse Comics. His series The Love Brothers has appeared in Aces Weekly.

ComicMix.com editor-in- chief Mike Gold is a 40-year veteran of the comic book field, having co-founded the Chicago Comicon as well as First Comics with Rick Obadiah, later serving as group editor/director of editorial development of DC Comics and a packager of comics with arrogantMGMS. Among the many projects he edited and helped develop are American Flagg!, Jon Sable Freelance, GrimJack, The Flash, Green Arrow, The Question, Legends, Breathtaker, and Mars. Gold is also a long-time political activist and broadcaster, presently doing the show Weird Sounds Inside The Gold Mind on getthepointradio.com. He was the recipient of the Hero Initiative Humanitarian of the Year Award, given at the Baltimore Comic-Con in 2011.

Cryptozoo Crew artist Jerry Carr will debut a select number of large and small stretched canvas prints, illustrating a variety of furkini-clad jungle heroines and the monkeys who love them. At the Baltimore Comic-Con he will also unveil new, limited edition poster prints depicting all kinds of alien, primate, and reptilian critters. His and Allan Gross' Cryptozoo Crew has been optioned by Alcon Entertainment.

G.D. Falksen is an author, lecturer, public speaker, and actor. He also studies history and has consulted for Disney. He is the author of The Ouroboros Cycle series, The Transatlantic Conspiracy, and several other works of fiction. He is a voice actor for and co-writer of the animated film Hullabaloo and an accompanying educational series titled Ask The Professor.

Evelyn Kriete is an editor, producer, artist, stylist, marketing adviser, social media strategist, and new media coordinator. She is also a crowdfunding consultant for Indiegogo and Comicmix. Through crowdfunding, she has raised over $1 million for various projects, including the animated film Hullabaloo, which she is producing alongside film creator James Lopez. She has previously worked on the staff of literary publications such as Weird Tales and Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine.
