Filming Commences on “Crazy Rich Asians”
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Filming began today on Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Crazy Rich Asians,” based on the acclaimed worldwide bestseller by Kevin Kwan.
Jon M. Chu (“Now You See Me 2”) is directing the contemporary romantic comedy, which features an entirely Asian international cast. The film stars Constance Wu (“Fresh Off the Boat”); Henry Golding, making his feature film debut; Gemma Chan (“Humans”); Awkwafina (upcoming “Ocean’s 8,” “Neighbors 2”); and Michelle Yeoh (upcoming “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).
Color Force’s Nina Jacobson (“The Hunger Games” films) and Brad Simpson (“World War Z”), and Ivanhoe’s John Penotti (“Hell or High Water”) are producing the film, with Tim Coddington, Robert Friedland and Kwan serving as executive producers.
“Crazy Rich Asians” follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu (Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick’s family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country’s wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. Being on Nick’s arm puts a target on Rachel’s back, with jealous socialites and, worse, Nick’s own disapproving mother (Yeoh) taking aim. And it soon becomes clear that while money can’t buy love, it can definitely complicate things.
The film’s large ensemble cast also includes Chris Pang (“Marco Polo”), Sonoya Mizuno (“La La Land”), Jing Lusi (“Stan Lee’s Lucky Man”), and comedian Ronny Chieng (“The Daily Show”), as well as a number of Singaporean actors, including Pierre Png, Fiona Xie and Tan Kheng Hua.
The behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Vanja Cernjul (“Marco Polo”), production designer Nelson Coates (“Fifty Shades Darker”), costume designer Mary Vogt (“Kong: Skull Island”) and editor Myron Kerstein (“Going in Style”).

RIOT, a one-hour special airing the day before LA 92 on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 9/8c, will provide firsthand accounts of the events in Los Angeles in April 1992 by those who lived it, helping also to shed light on the evolution and future of human protest. In 1992, Los Angeles erupted in turmoil. The frustration between African-American citizens and the Los Angeles Police Department reached a tipping point with the acquittal of four officers who had been caught on tape using what the public deemed excessive force. Riots that reflected this public outrage ensued. Although at their core these riots were a protest for equality, this meaning was lost in the destruction and chaos. RIOT will feature stories from and interviews with key eyewitnesses and spokespeople who can provide insight into the city’s race relations and how the city made it to the “point of no return”: from world-renowned graffiti artist Kelly Graval (aka RISK) and hip-hop star Rakaa from Dilated Peoples to former LAPD Detective Tom Lange, civil rights lawyer Connie Rice and LA Times columnist Sandy Banks.
Psychologist Abigail Marsh and sociologists Fran Buntman and Antwan Jones will use history and biology to examine why some people demonstrate their frustrations in the form of a riot while others use organized protest. With human rights issues consistently making headlines and social media giving every citizen public forums in which to share his or her opinions, these experts will attempt to answer the looming question: Are we on the precipice of more disastrous riots in the future?

WASHINGTON & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--National Geographic announced today the official greenlight of a second season of the scripted anthology series Genius, which tells the untold stories of the world’s most brilliant innovators. The announcement comes as the first season is set to premiere tonight.
Season two will chronicle the life of another renowned mastermind and tell the untold narrative of the person behind the genius. The identity of this virtuoso will be revealed during the season one finale of Genius on June 20.

WASHINGTON & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--National Geographic announced today the official greenlight of a second season of the scripted anthology series Genius, which tells the untold stories of the world’s most brilliant innovators. The announcement comes as the first season is set to premiere tonight.
Season two will chronicle the life of another renowned mastermind and tell the untold narrative of the person behind the genius. The identity of this virtuoso will be revealed during the season one finale of Genius on June 20.

Now, BET has joined forces with Twitter for the first-ever industry analysis of the overall impact and importance of “Black Twitter.” What is “Black Twitter”? It’s a digital water cooler where African Americans exchange ideas and opinions that are centered on the Black experience, all dialogue is unapologetically Black and is exclusive to things that impact the Black community. Then, on Saturday afternoon, fans will get a preview of what’s in store at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts during a presentation hosted by Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek. Sunday afternoon, Disney Legend Alan Menken will take fans on a musical journey during an all-new concert.
These Expo favorites will take place in “Hall D23,” the 6,800-seat venue located in Hall D of the Anaheim Convention Center. The schedule of Hall D23 Events and Presentations are as follows (all events subject to change):
The Disney Legends Awards Ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, July 14. The ceremony, hosted by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger, will once again honor those visionaries and artists who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy. This year’s recipients are: Carrie Fisher, Clyde “Gerry” Geronimi, Manuel Gonzales, Mark Hamill, Wayne Jackson, Stan Lee, Garry Marshall, Julie Taymor, and Oprah Winfrey.
The Walt Disney Studios will present a behind-the-scenes look at its blockbuster collection of upcoming films in two jam-packed Hall D23 sessions. At 2:30 p.m. on Friday, fans will discover what’s on the drawing board for the acclaimed filmmakers at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios. On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., Disney, Marvel, and Lucasfilm showcase the Studios’ exciting slate of live-action films. As always, attendees will be treated to exclusive footage, special guest appearances, and more!
On Saturday, July 15, at 3 p.m., step into the worlds of magic of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts with Chairman Bob Chapek to find out what’s new and what’s next for resorts around the globe.
To round out the weekend, Disney Legend Alan Menken will perform his exciting new one-man show, A Whole New World of Alan Menken. The eight-time Oscar®-winner introduced new generations to musicals through such box office hits as Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Enchanted, and Tangled, as well as the Broadway shows Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act, Newsies, and A Bronx Tale, as well as the ABC television series Galavant. Classic Archie is back with a twist: YOUR PAL ARCHIE launches in July from Parent, Templeton
Legendary artist celebrates 30 years with Archie by reinterpreting beloved look
Classic Archie is back with a fun twist in YOUR PAL ARCHIE, a new all-ages comic book series launching in July from artist Dan Parent and writer/inker Ty Templeton.
Parent, in his 30th year drawing Archie and the gang, continues his legendary run at the company with a tweak on the hugely popular Archie look, keeping his iconic style fresh and vibrant.
“I've been fortunate enough to be drawing in the classic style for so long, that I eventually formed my own style based on the Dan DeCarlo/Bob Montana model,” said series artist Dan Parent.
“In addition to drawing lots of classic Archie stories for the digests, I've been working on the digital first series LIFE WITH KEVIN, starring Kevin Keller. I had a feeling a classic monthly title might come back into the fold. So here it is!”
Parent’s artwork will be influenced from the styles and fashion of The CW’s hit new RIVERDALE TV series, but will remain familiar for fans of the classic style.
“The influence from the show is more of a fashion makeover for me. I've changed the hairstyles a bit, and the clothes. And the faces are a little more detailed, but the line work is still the simple classic lines I've always used.”
Comics mainstay Ty Templeton will be making his Archie Comics debut with YOUR PAL ARCHIE, joining Parent as the series writer and inker.
“This made me a hero to my children,” said Templeton. “I consider it an honor to write Archie’s latest adventures and a big responsibility that I take very seriously until I remember that it's my job to dump Archie in a bucket of squid now and then or it won't be fun.
Speaking of fun, I get to work with the legendary Dan Parent! He's given the characters a new updated look, but they still feel like group we've all grown up with. I could not be happier for this opportunity and I hope the fans are as happy with the result.”
Victor Gorelick, Archie Comics Co-President/Editor-in-Chief, will edit the new series. Gorelick, whose tenure at Archie Comics will hit 60 years toward the end of 2017, is excited to be working on the new series.
“Archie and I have been real close pals since October 6, 1958. That’s when I started working at Archie Comics. My goal is to make Archie your pal, too. Your Pal Archie will have stories filled with humor. The kind of stories that have, over the last 75 years, made Archie an American icon,” said Gorelick.
“I have two of the most talented people in the industry, Dan Parent, who has been writing and drawing Betty & Veronica, Archie and Jughead stories for almost 30 years and Ty Templeton, who is new to Archie. He’s a terrific writer and artist. I’m looking forward to working with him."
