Casting Continues on the New “Fantastic Beasts” Adventure Set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World
Actors Join the Ensemble Led by Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Jude Law and Johnny Depp
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Additions have been made to the cast of the all-new adventure set in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, the second of five feature films in the series that began with “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” The film, which is currently in production, is being directed by David Yates.
Among the actors who have joined the international ensemble cast are: Carmen Ejogo, returning to the role of Seraphina Picquery; Wolf Roth as Spielman; Victoria Yeates as Bunty; Derek Riddell as Torquil Travers; Poppy Corby-Tuech as Rosier; Cornell S. John as Arnold Guzman; and Brontis Jodorowsky as Nicolas Flamel. Fiona Glascott and Jessica Williams have also been cast in roles to be revealed.
Reprising their roles from the worldwide hit “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” are Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”), who stars as wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander; Katherine Waterston as Auror Tina Goldstein; Dan Fogler as No-Maj Jacob Kowalski; Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein; and Ezra Miller as Credence. Oscar nominee Johnny Depp (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, “Finding Neverland”) returns as the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and Oscar nominee Jude Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Cold Mountain”) portrays Hogwarts professor Albus Dumbledore.
Rounding out the main cast are Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange; Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander; Claudia Kim as a woman in a wizarding circus; William Nadylam as Yusuf Kama; Ingvar Sigurdsson as Grimmson; Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Skender; and Kevin Guthrie as Abernathy.
J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the film, which opens in 1927, a few months after Newt helped to unveil and capture the infamous Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. However, as he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause—elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore. But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina, Queenie and Jacob, but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.
The film expands the wizarding world, moving from New York to London and on to Paris. There are also some surprising nods to the Harry Potter stories that will delight fans of the books and film series.
David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram are producing the film, with Tim Lewis, Neil Blair, Rick Senat and Danny Cohen serving as executive producers.
Collaborating with Yates behind the scenes are: Oscar-winning director of photography Philippe Rousselot (“A River Runs Through It”); three-time Oscar-winning production designer Stuart Craig (“The English Patient,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Gandhi,” the “Harry Potter” films), three-time BAFTA Award-winning editor Mark Day (the last four “Harry Potter” films, “State of Play”), four-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” “Chicago,” “Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Alice in Wonderland”), Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor Tim Burke (“Gladiator,” the “Harry Potter” films), and Oscar-nominated visual effects supervisor Christian Manz (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1”).
The new adventure is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, which has been the cinematic home of the Wizarding World since the first “Harry Potter” film.
Slated for release on November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Review: Live-Action "GHOST IN THE SHELL" is a Miscast Misfire
TRASH IN MY EYE No. 17 (of 2017) by Leroy Douresseaux
[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Running time: 107 minutes (1 hour, 47 minutes)
MPAA – PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, suggestive content and some disturbing images
DIRECTOR: Rupert Sanders
WRITERS: Jamie Moss, William Wheeler, and Ehren Kruger (based on the comic, Ghost in the Shell, by Masamune Shirow)
PRODUCERS: Avi Arad, Michael Costigan, and Steven Paul
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Jess Hall (D.o.P.)
EDITORS: Billy Rich and Neil Smith
COMPOSERS: Lorne Balfe and Clint Mansell
SCI-FI/ACTION
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbaek, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, Michael Carmen Pitt, Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Kaori Momoi, and Peter Ferdinando
Ghost in the Shell is a 2017 science fiction and action film from director Rupert Sanders. The film is based on the manga (Japanese comics) created by Masamune Shirow and published in 1989 and 1990. Ghost in the Shell the movie focuses on a first-of-its-kind cyborg super-soldier that fights terrorists and dangerous criminals.
Ghost in the Shell is set in Tokyo, Japan, in the the near-future. Most humans have augmented various traits like vision, strength, and intelligence with cybernetics, and the line between human and robotics has blurred. Major Mira Killian (Scarlett Johansson) is a young woman who survived a terrorist attack that killed her parents. Her body was destroyed, but she was saved by the world's leading developer of “augmentative technology,” Hanka Robotics, via the secret “Project 2571.” Mira's brain (her “ghost”) was placed in a mechanical body or “shell.” Now, she is cyborg counter-terrorism operative in a unit known as “Section 9.”
A year after her rebirth, Major is involved in an operation to discover the whereabouts of the mysterious hacker and cyber-terrorist known only as “Kuze” (Michael Carmen Pitt). An electronic or digital encounter with Kuze causes the glitches that Major has been suffering to intensify. Major has also discovered that this case is raising troubling questions about what really happened to her and that will bring her into direct conflict with Hanka's domineering CEO, Cutter (Peter Ferdinando).
I would call Ghost in the Shell mediocre or average, but those words don't quite describe the listless, empty nature of this film. Ghost in the Shell has been praised for its special effects, soundtrack, and design, but little of that impresses me. In fact, the visual effects look like leftovers from Steven Spielberg's 2002 film, Minority Report.
It looks to me as if Ghost in the Shell's director, Rupert Sanders, is desperately trying to make his film look and sound like Ridley Scott's beloved 1982 film, Blade Runner. Ghost in the Shell, however, has neither Blade Runner's style nor its jazzy, Film-Noir vibe; actually Ghost in the Shell is simply a limp and lame attempt to copy Blade Runner.
Some have been critical of Ghost in the Shell's story and its lack of character development. Yeah, I would describe it as “lack of character development,” and the screenplay is indeed hackneyed. You can see it story points coming miles away; everything Major knows is a lie; she shares a past connection with the villain; being a human is the most important thing... yadda, yadda, yadda.
Because Ghost in the Shell is an original Japanese work of fiction, some people were upset that Scarlett Johansson, a white woman, plays the lead. I have read the original manga, and Major is drawn to look like a white woman. Even if she were not depicted as white, it still would not bother me all that much that a white actress plays the part of Major.
It is not Johansson's skin color that is the problem. It is her wooden, monotone performance. It is as if Scarlett is pretending to be a ghost with no personality that lives inside a mannequin. It is obvious that I am disappointed in this movie. As an adaptation of a visually striking manga/comic, Ghost in the Shell is simply a major misfire.

VIZ Media to Bring "Blame!" Anime to U.S. Home Media
VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF THE CELEBRATED ANIME FILM BLAME
Acclaimed Sci-Fi Thriller From Polygon Pictures Scheduled For DVD And Blu-Ray Release in 2018
San Francisco, CA – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, thrilled a packed audience during its official panel at New York Comic Con this past weekend as it announced the acquisition of the North American home video and product licensing rights to the celebrated film, BLAME!
VIZ Media will release BLAME! as Blu-ray and DVD Editions, featuring an Art Gallery, and a Blu-ray exclusive "Making of BLAME!" documentary. The film was directed by Hiroyuki Seshita, who also brought the world the complex, sci-fi action of "Knights of Sidonia" and Ajin: Demi-Human. BLAME! debuted on NETFLIX this past May.
In BLAME!, an “infection” in the past has caused automated systems to spiral out of order, resulting in a multi-leveled city structure that replicates itself infinitely in all directions. Now humanity has lost access to the city’s controls, and is hunted down and purged by the defense system known as the Safeguard. In a tiny corner of the city, a little enclave known as the Electro-Fishers is facing eventual extinction, trapped between the threat of the Safeguard and dwindling food supplies. A girl named Zuru goes on a journey to find food for her village, only to inadvertently cause doom when an observation tower senses her and summons a Safeguard pack to eliminate the threat. With her companions dead and all escape routes blocked, the only thing that can save her now is the sudden arrival of Killy the Wanderer, on his quest for the Net Terminal Genes, the key to restoring order to the world.
“BLAME! blends apocalyptic action and hard science fiction with the story of man’s struggle against technology,” says Charlene Ingram, VIZ Media’s Director of Animation Marketing. “We are thrilled to add this film to VIZ Media’s home media collection and look forward to presenting BLAME! to fans this spring.”
BLAME! was originally serialized as a manga series in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine from 1997 to 2003. It was the debut work of creator Tsutomu Nihei, who went on to win the 39th Kodansha Manga Award for his series, Knights of Sidonia. Nihei is also known for his work on the sci-fi manga series, Biomega (which is published in English by VIZ Media).
BLAME! was produced by Polygon Pictures, the Japanese 3DCG animation studio widely renowned for its award-winning work on shows like "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Transformers: Prime," as well as the acclaimed Knights of Sidonia series.

PANELS HOSTED BY IMAGE COMICS:
Image Comics: Creating The Future of Creativity
Thursday, October 5th @ 4:45 – 5:45 PM, Room 1A02
"Do you have a story to tell that you think might be "too weird" or a little bit off-kilter? Here's the truth: anything goes in comics. The only limits are your time and imagination, so why hold back? Come to this panel and follow the example of Seth M. Peck (THE REALM), Cat Staggs (CROSSWIND), Jeremy Haun & Jason A. Hurley (THE BEAUTY), Brenden Fletcher (MOTOR CRUSH), and Matt Wilson (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE). They swing for the fences every time, and so should you.
Image Comics: The Future of Genre
Friday October 6th @ 6:45 - 7:45 PM, Room 1A21
"What kind of comics are you into? Are you a horror fiend? A crime fan? On the hook for sci-fi? Comics are perfectly suited to tell all types of stories. Come listen to Wes Craig (DEADLY CLASS), Ryan Browne (CURSE WORDS), Donny Cates (GOD COUNTRY), Gregg Schigiel (PIX), and Amy Reeder (ROCKET GIRL) discuss telling stories that range from the realistic to the magical, what drives their creative engines, and what they're looking forward to seeing more of in the future.
Image Comics: The Future of Fantasy
Saturday October 7th @ 4:00 - 5:00 PM, Room 1A24
"Fantasy has long been a genre where we discuss our deepest fears, express our quietest hopes, or even just enjoy a rollicking story of swords and magic. Justin Jordan (THE FAMILY TRADE), Meredith Finch (ROSE), Sebastian Girner (SCALES & SCOUNDRELS), Simon Spurrier (CRY HAVOC), Caspar Wijngaard (ANGELIC), and W. Maxwell Prince (ONE WEEK IN THE LIBRARY) have more than proven that they know their way around a fantasy tale, and they're here to talk about telling stories about fantastic places while living on our mundane Earth, avoiding common pitfalls of the genre, and making the unbelievable beloved.
Image Comics: The Future of Storytelling
Sunday, October 8th @ 3:45 - 4:45 PM, Room 1A21
"Comics aren't just words or pictures. They're the intersection of both, and mastering the art of comics storytelling can be tricky. Marjorie Liu (MONSTRESS), Kyle Higgins (HADRIAN'S WALL), Morgan Beem (THE FAMILY TRADE), Andrew MacLean (HEADLOPPER), Alison Sampson (WINNEBAGO GRAVEYARD), and Cliff Chiang (PAPER GIRLS) co-create some of the most beautiful and powerful comics on store shelves. Come listen to them discuss the ins and outs of storytelling and how to make your comics the best they can be.
