"Gone Girl" Author Gillian Flynn Sign Amazon Deal

Amazon Studios Greenlights Utopia, Signs Gillian Flynn to Overall Deal

Flynn, the award-winning, best-selling author and screenwriter of Gone Girl and Sharp Objects, will be the creator, executive producer and showrunner of Utopia, a new series exclusively for Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ: AMZN)— Amazon Studios announced that it has greenlit a straight-to-series order for Utopia, a nine-episode series from award-winning Gillian Flynn, the best-selling author and screenwriter of Golden Globe nominated Gone Girl and HBO’s highly anticipated Sharp Objects. Flynn has also inked an overall deal with Amazon Studios across television, marking Utopia as the first project. Utopia will be available exclusively on Prime Video in more than 200 countries and territories.

Utopia is based on the British series of the same name written by Dennis Kelly. The series is a co-production between Endemol Shine North America and Kudos, an Endemol Shine Group UK production studio, and Amazon Studios.

A group of young adults, who meet online, are mercilessly hunted by a shadowy deep state organization after they come in to possession of a near mythical cult underground graphic novel – they discover the conspiracy theories in the comic’s pages may actually be real and are forced in to the dangerous, unique and ironic position of saving the world.

"Ready Player One" Crosses Half-Billion Mark in Box Office

Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” Surpasses $500 Million Worldwide

The action adventure has earned more than $200 million (RMB 1.3b) in China, becoming the 10th-highest U.S. release ever in that market

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The widely acclaimed action adventure “Ready Player One,” from Warner Bros. Pictures, Amblin Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures, has crossed half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, “Ready Player One” has been a hit in every corner of the globe. Domestically, the movie has taken in more the $120.6 million to date and counting. On the international front, where the box office has been climbing steadily, the film is already at an estimated $379.5 million, including China, where “Ready Player One” has earned more than $200 million (RMB 1.3b). Other markets continue to show strong results, including the UK ($21.1 million), Korea ($17.7 million), France ($16.8 million) and Russia ($12 million).

Completing its worldwide release, “Ready Player One” opened this weekend in Japan, where anticipation has been extremely high.

Spielberg directed “Ready Player One” from a screenplay by Zak Penn and Ernest Cline, based on Cline’s global bestseller of the same name. From Variety:  Recording artist, DJ, and music producer, Tim Bergling, has died at the age of 28, Friday, April 20, 2018.  Best known as "Avicii," he was one of the most successful electronic dance music (EDM) artists of all times.  His hits included "Levels" and "Wake Me Up."  He produced and remixed music for Daft Punk, Madonna, and Coldplay.

From WWE:  Professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino has died at the age of 82, Wednesday, April 18, 2018.  Born in Italy, he became a professional wrestler in 1959 and was best known for his work with the WWWF, now known as the WWE.

From ABC:  Former First Lady Barbara Bush has died at the age of 92, Tuesday, April 17, 2018.  She was the wife of the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, and mother of the 43rd President, George Walker Bush.  Mrs. Bush was also the mother of the 43rd Governor of the State of Florida, John Ellis "Jeb" Bush, Sr.

From Deadline:  The actor and magician, Harry Anderson, has died at the age of 65, Monday, April 16, 2018.  Anderson was best known for his starring role in the long-running NBC sitcom, "Night Court" (1984 to 1992 - 9 seasons).  He later starred in the CBS sitcom, "Dave's World" (1993 to 1997 - 4 seasons).

From THR:  U.S. Marine,Vietnam veteran, and actor, R. Lee Ermey, has died at the age of 74, Sunday, April 15, 2018.  Ermey may be best remembered for his role as "Gunnery Sergeant Hartman" in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket."  Kubrick allowed Ermey to improvise his performance, which Kubrick rarely did.  He was also a voice performer in Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story" films.

From Variety:  Italian film director, Vittorio Taviani, has died at the age of 88, Sunday, April 15, 2018.  Vittorio and his brother, Paolo (who is still living), directed their films together.  The brothers won the Cannes Film Festival's "Palme d'Or" in 1977 for the film, "Padre padrone."

Steven Spielberg to Bring "Blackhawk" Comic Book to the Big Screen

Steven Spielberg Set to Take on “Blackhawk”

The revered filmmaker brings his creative powers to his first movie in the DC universe

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On the heels of their successful collaboration on “Ready Player One,” Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment are again teaming with Warner Bros. Pictures to produce the action adventure “Blackhawk,” with an eye to Spielberg directing the film. Based on the classic DC Comics property, the project will mark the filmmaker’s first feature centered around characters from DC. The announcement was made today by Toby Emmerich, Chairman, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

[Editor's note:  Blackhawk was originally created for Quality Comics in 1941 before being acquired by National Periodical Publications, now DC Comics, in 1957.]

In making the announcement, Emmerich stated, “We are so proud to be the studio behind Steven Spielberg’s latest hit, and are thrilled to be working with him again on this new action adventure. We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide.”

The screenplay for “Blackhawk” is being written by David Koepp, who has collaborated with Spielberg as a screenwriter on the blockbusters “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Spielberg will produce the film together with Kristie Macosko Krieger, under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while Sue Kroll will executive produce, under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment shingle.

Spielberg noted, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring ‘Ready Player One’ to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on ‘Blackhawk.’”

Spielberg’s next two films are the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise and “West Side Story.”

“Blackhawk” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
