Review: "BLACK WIDOW" is Dark Drama and Spectacular Action
TRASH IN MY EYE No. 45 of 2021 (No. 1783) by Leroy Douresseaux

MPAA – PG-13 for intense sequences of violence/action, some language and thematic material
DIRECTOR: Cate Shortland
WRITERS: Eric Pearson; from a story by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson (based upon the Marvel Comics character)
PRODUCER: Kevin Feige
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Gabriel Beristain
EDITOR: Leigh Folsom Boyd
COMPOSER: Lorne Balfe
SUPERHERO/DRAMA/ACTION
Starring: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, Ray Winstone, Ever Anderson, Violet McGraw, O-T Fagbenie, and William Hurt
Black Widow is a 2021 3D superhero film directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the 24th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series. The film is based on the Marvel Comics character, Natalia Alianovna “Natasha” Romanova/Black Widow, that was created by Stan Lee, Don Rico, and artist Don Heck and first appeared in the comic book, Tales of Suspense #52 (cover dated: April 1964). Black Widow the film finds the title character on the run and forced to confront the conspiracies and people of her past.
Black Widow is largely set between the events depicted in the films, Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity Wars (2018). The film, however, opens in 1995. Young Natasha Romanoff (Ever Anderson) lives a quiet life in suburban Ohio with her younger sister, Yelena Belova (Violet McGraw), and their parents. But Natasha and Yelena are not siblings, and their surrogate mother, Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), is really a Russian scientist/spy, and their father, Alexei Shostkov (David Harbour), is a spy and also the costumed superhero, “Red Guardian,” Russia's super-soldier version of Captain America. When this “family's” mission suddenly ends, Natasha and Yelena are returned to Russia and sent to the “Red Room” for further training.
Twenty-one years later, in the year 2016, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is on fugitive, on the run from U.S. Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross (William Hurt). Fate reunites her with an older Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who until recently was still a “Widow,” an assassin working for the Red Room. Now, both women, traumatized by their pasts, set out to find and kill Dreykov (Ray Winstone), the head of the Red Room and the mastermind behind the “Widow” program. To do so, however, they must mend the broken relationships of their pasts, and Natasha must face the reality that her actions could not only alert her pursuers to her whereabouts, but could also lead to her destruction.
I wondered how Marvel Studios could hope to deliver a superhero movie that would satisfy their audiences in the wake of Avengers: Endgame, which was a special effects extravaganza, which changed the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which was a record-setting box office hit, and which saw some beloved characters die, including the Black Widow. Black Widow does offer big action sequences: a harrowing opening air plane escape, a battle royale in Budapest, a crazy prison escape, and that final showdown on a giant aerial base. After waiting two years for a Marvel Studios film (because of the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown of movie theaters), the big action of Black Widow is big enough to sate my Marvel needs.
However, I must be honest, it is the action that really makes Black Widow for me. The drama is good, and the interpersonal relationship conflict and drama are fitting for the story of a character like the Black Widow who past is so very dark and is filled with violence and pain. The main cast of Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz gives excellent performances in this tale of betrayal and of secrets of lies. In a way, these performances only serve to make the drama all the more dark, edgy, and, at times, depressing. So, that is why I must be honest. I respected the character drama of Black Widow, which director Cate Shortland delivers in gritty detail. But while watching the film, I was always anxious for the arrival of the next big, special effects-driven action sequence, and man, Black Widow did not disappoint!
Black Widow has a great adversary in “The Taskmaster,” but the reveal of that villain's identity is a bit of a letdown. Ray Winstone, an actor I like, was just okay as Dreykov, a promising bad guy the script makes into a shallow character. Still, the action scenes – I'm crazy about them. They are both the reason that I am giving Black Widow a high grade and the reason I will watch Black Widow many more times when it starts airing on cable television in a little less than two years from now.

“Full Throttle Dark” Part Five
Nocterra is a horror and science fiction comic book series from writer Scott Snyder and artist Tony S. Daniel. Published by Image Comics, Nocterra is set on an Earth that has been experiencing an everlasting night, the “Big PM,” since the sky went dark and the world was plunged into an everlasting night over a decade ago. Colorist Tomeu Morey and letterer Andworld Design complete the series' creative team.
In Nocterra, any living organisms left unlit in the dark for more than 10 hours start undergoing a biological transformation. Soon, the living turn into monstrous versions of themselves, becoming something called a “Shade.”
Valentina “Val” Riggs – call sign “Sundog,” – was in the fifth grade the day the “Big PM” occurred. Thirteen years later (“13 PM”), Val drives a big rig hauler, a heavily-illuminated 18-wheeler known as the “Sundog Convoy.” A skilled “ferryman” Val transports people and goods along deadly unlit roads between the few remaining human outposts, and now she has her most dangerous haul – Bailey, a girl with a dangerous secret and her brother, Emory “Em” Riggs, who is becoming a Shade.
As Nocterra #5 opens, Val remembers those early days of sanctuary, when there was hope to reverse her parents' transformations into “Smudges,” the name for a human Shade. Now, Val has found safety in the mysterious Sanctuary, having brought Bailey to the her grandfather's brother, Tiberius McCray, the leader of Sanctuary.
Sanctuary is also the place where Val found that mysterious light, “the Lux,” that can reverse Em's transformation into a Smudge. Now, Val has two choices: keep herself and Em safe or take Sanctuary for granted and leave. Val is leaning towards that latter, but is there truth and darkness even in this great light?
THE LOWDOWN: As I have written in some of my earlier reviews of Nocterra, I enjoy writer Scott Snyder's creator-owned series. I have also told you, dear readers, that I am usually happy to read a comic book drawn by Tony S. Daniel, going back to his early days writing and drawing creator-owned titles at Image, such as The Tenth. Nocterra has justified my devotion, and this penultimate issue, #5, of the series' first story arc has made me determined to follow Nocterra's dark highways and byways wherever they might lead.
As a theme in Nocterra #5, Snyder presents the idea that nothing, even sanctuary, is enough for humans. They will take the bad that is the best for which they can hope and do worse trying to get better instead – even if that will obviously lead to disaster. Andworld Design's lettering pounds the reads with this issue's ominous mood and dark misgivings about humanity.
Daniels eschews kinetic action for two-fisted conspiratorial drama that carries readers to this issue's shocking cliffhanger. Tomeu Morey's beautiful colors advances an array of moods and emotions, conveying darkness even in the blinding light of Lux. So, dear readers, there is time to catch up before this debut story arc ends.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Scott Snyder and Tony S. Daniel will want to sample Nocterra.

Geiger created by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank
“Fallout”
Geiger is a new comic book series from writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank. Published by Image Comics, Geiger is set on a dying Earth in the years after a nuclear war ravaged the planet. Colorist Brad Anderson and letterer Rob Leigh complete the series' creative team.
Geiger is set 20 years after the nuclear conflict known as the “Unknown War” ravaged the planet, turning Earth into a dying world. In the state of Nevada, desperate outlaws battle for survival in a world of rapidly disappearing resources and supplies. In Boulder City, Nevada, there resides the fearsome man known by many names: Joe Glow, The Meltdown Man, and the Walking Bomb, to name a few. But before the war, he was simply a man named Tariq Geiger. So who or what is Geiger, now?
As Geiger #3 (“Fallout”) opens, a flashback reveals Tariq's past life when he began his fight against cancer. Back in the present, Tariq, now known as “Geiger,” has saved two siblings, Hailee and Henry, from Nightcrawlers. What will he do with these kids … when all he wants to be is alone?
Meanwhile, another flashback reveals Geiger's first encounter with the young King of Camelot and his Knights. With this King spoiling for revenge, Geiger may have to take a serious look at whatever these two children's plans are.
THE LOWDOWN: As first issues go, Geiger #1 was mostly an introduction, kind of like a prologue. It introduced the title character, Geiger, giving readers a look at who he was in the past and a glance at who he is now. Geiger #2 went inside Las Vegas.
With Geiger #3, Geoff Johns begins to excavate the heart of the character drama and the passion of old grudges and conflicts. It feels like the third issue is the first one with some real emotion in the story.
In this third issue, Gary Frank's pencil art captures the emotions, passions, and hotter blood of the relationships of the past that shape the present of Geiger's narrative. Frank conveys the evil and petulance of the fake boy king in a way that strikes out at the reader, while he reveals Tariq/Geiger in layers that finally opens up the character to readers. Brad Anderson's colors, however, keeps this “revealing” from dispelling the mystery by painting color and shadow in equal measure.
I'm all in on Geiger now, and I highly recommend it.
I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Geoff Johns and Gary Frank will want to check out Geiger.
