CANNES - From Variety:  At the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the "Palme d'Or" goes to director Julia Ducournau's horror film, "Titane."

BOX OFFICE - From Variety:   The animated/live-action hybrid film, "Space Jam: A New Legacy," which stars NBA mega-star, LeBron James, is set to win the weekend box office over Disney's "Black Widow."

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The long-running lawsuit between AMC and Frank Darabont, the original showrunner of "The Walking Dead," and his agency, CAA, has been settled with AMC giving Darabont and CAA 200 million dollars. 

CANNES - From Deadline:  Kira Kovalenko’s Russian drama, "Unclenching The Fists," won the Grand Prize in Cannes Film Festival’s "Un Certain Regard" sidebar this year.

DISNEY - From Deadline:   Oscar-nominee Antonio Banderas is joining fellow Oscar-nominee Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones 5."  James Mangold is directing the film.

TELEVISION - From TheWrap:   The site published excerpts from 360 pages of complaints that supporters of former President Trump made to the FCC about "Saturday Night Live" and its comedy skits about Trump.

BOX OFFICE - From Deadline: "Black Widow" has the best non-holiday Monday at the pandemic box office (7.16 million dollars) and now has the best pandemic box office Tuesday (7.6 million dollars).

STAR TREK - From Deadline:   Director Matt Shakman guided Disney+/Marvel's "WandaVision" to 23 Emmy nominations, including one for himself.  Now, his next project is Paramount's next "Star Trek" movie, which is being fast-tracked to begin production next spring.

PIXAR-TRAILER - From CBC:   Pixar has released a teaser trailer for its film, "Turning Red" (Spring 2022), and Toronto residents are happy to see that their city is the backdrop for the film.

EMMYS - From Variety:   The nominations for the 2021 / 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced.  The article includes a complete list of nominees.  The winners will be announced on September 19th in a ceremony broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount Plus and hosted by Cedric the Entertainer.

From Variety:  Cedric the Entertainer has been named host for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony.

LGBTQ-EMMYS - From Variety:   Mj Rodriguez has become the first transgender performer to pick up an Emmy nomination in a major acting category.  The category is "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" for FX's "Pose."

THE RACISTS - From SkyNews:  One of the three Black English football players receiving racist abuse from English football fans speaks out.  Tyrone Mings rightly calls out Home Secretary "Pissy" Priti Patel for her hypocrisy.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 7/9 -7/11/2021 weekend box office is Disney/Marvel's "Black Widow" with an estimated take of 80 million dollars.

From Deadline:  The concert documentary, "Summer of Soul (...Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)" leads the specialty box office with a 1.4 million dollars.  The film is distributed by Searchlight Pictures and also streams on Hulu.

CANNES - From Variety:  Director Wes Anderson's long-awaited film, "The French Dispatch" dazzles the crowd at the 2021 edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

OBITS:

From Deadline:   Rapper, singer, DJ, and actor, Biz Markie, has died at the age of 57, Friday, July 16, 2021.  Biz was best known for the hit song, "Just a Friend" (1989), which was a top ten hit on the "Billboard Hot 100" music chart was certified platinum.

From Deadline:  Rock guitarist, Jeff LaBar, has died at the age of 58, Wednesday, July 14, 2021.  LaBar was best known as a guitarist for the 1980s hair/glam metal band, "Cinderella," which he joined in 1985, replacing an original member, Michael Schermick.  LaBar played on all four of Cinderella's four studio albums and was a fixture with the band during its heyday from the mid-1980s to the 1990.

From Variety:   Veteran television and film actor, Charlie Robinson, has died at the age of 75, Monday, July 12, 2021.  Wilson was best known for his role as clerk court, "Mac Robinson," in the former NBC sitcom, "Night Court" (1984-92), beginning in the series second season.  Wilson was a series regular or had a recurring role in a number of other sitcoms, including "Buffalo Bill," "Love & War," "Home Improvement," and "Mom," to name a few.

“2467”

The Silver Coin is a horror comic book anthology and miniseries published by Image Comics.  It is the creation of artist Michael Walsh and writers Ed Brisson, Jeff Lemire, Kelly Thompson, and Chip Zdarsky.  Each issue of this five-issue miniseries tells a tale of terror that is set in a supernatural world in which the mysterious “Silver Coin” changes the lives of those who take possession of it.  The fourth issue is written by Jeff Lemire; drawn and lettered by Michael Walsh; and colored by Walsh and Toni Marie Griffin.

The Silver Coin #4 (entitled “2467”) opens in the year 2467.  The new metropolis of this new world has buried the old world beneath its junk and refuse.  A trio of scavengers are on the run from Officer Colten Dudley and his remote controlled drone (called a “bird”).  But one of these scavengers is going to discover an ancient treasure.  The price it carries is unimaginable, and everyone may end up paying that price.

THE LOWDOWN:  As I wrote in my reviews of the first three issues of The Silver Coin, I am a big fan of horror comic book anthologies.  That includes everything from the classic EC Comics titles to later titles like DC Comics' Ghosts and House of Mystery, Kitchen Sink Press's Death Rattle, and Approbation Comics' Amour, to name a few.

“2467,” the offering in The Silver Coin #4, surpasses the stories offered in issues #2 and #3.  Jeff Lemire, who has written some outstanding science fiction comics, including Sweet Tooth, offers a tale that shows that the past isn't always history – a thing long gone – even if we have forgotten that past.

Once again, Michael Walsh's art and graphical storytelling are what really delivers the unsettling moments in this tale.  The “worms” which the citizens of this world use to connect to each other as if each person were a device, are both nasty and chilling.  I think the world of “2467” is worth some expansion.  Dear readers, let's come back for the finale and see what's in store.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic horror comic book anthologies will want to spend The Silver Coin.

Comics Review: "POST AMERICANA #6" is a Wonder of Violence

Post Americana is a seven-issue miniseries written and drawn by Steve Skroce and published by Image Comics.  Post Americana is set in a dystopian future and focuses on two rebels' attempts to save an area called the “Wasteland” from a rogue President of the United States.  Colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Fonografiks complete Post Americana's creative team.

Post Americana has two settings.  The first is “The Bubble,” an installation inside the Cheyenne Mountains that is the most sophisticated super-bunker in the world.  Inside, Nathaniel Hawksworthe, the new President of the United States, plans to use the bunker's resources to build the “New America” by basically paving over the second setting, the “Wasteland.”  Determined to stop Hawksworthe are Michael “Mike” Lee, a hapless rebel, and Carolyn, a deadly Wasteland girl, who is already hellbent on revenge against the denizens of the Bubble.  But Carolyn and Mike will have to survive the Wasteland in order to save the Wasteland.

As Post Americana #6 opens, Carolyn, Mike, and Evey face betrayal in the form of the wrath of Night Terror and his partner, Donny (a vicious werewolf).  On the lost coast of California, the trio found Wonder Studios (a Walt Disney-like studio), and thought that they had found a refuge.  Can Mister Floppibottoms and Eggbert save our heroes?

Meanwhile, things are starting to take a dark turn in the Bubble.  What shall we make of Hawksworthe's crazy story of his apparently crazier past?  The future hangs in the balance!

THE LOWDOWN:  As a reminder:  I am a huge fan of writer-artist Steve Skroce, going back over two decades.  All the while that I have been reviewing this series, I have regaled you, dear readers, with the joys of reading Post Americana.

It turns out that Post Americana #5 was NOT the penultimate issue of the series.  The former six-issue miniseries is now seven issues long.  A similar thing happened with Skroce's previous creator-owned Image series, Maestro, so this issue, Post Americana #6 is the penultimate issues.

Issue #5 seemed divorced from the rest of the narrative, but issue #6 brings it all back, connecting the Wonder Series subplot with a jarring turn in the story of the Bubble and its ruler.  Who knows what to expect of issue #7, but, in the meantime, Skroce delivers a high-octane, violent, action movie sixth issue.  As always his kinetic drawing style and bracing graphic storytelling is perfect for the ol' ultra-violence depicted here.

I can't wait for the seventh issue.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Steve Skroce's comics and of post-apocalyptic sci-fi will want Post Americana.

The Walt Disney Company Celebrates 166 Nominations for the 2021 Primetime Emmys

Congratulations to The Walt Disney Company’s 2021 Emmy Award Nominees

The Walt Disney Company proudly announces an impressive 166 nominations across 85 categories and 38 titles for the 73rd Primetime Emmy® Awards. While the Television Academy announced the attributed total number as 146, the Company additionally recognizes all the programming produced for third party platforms and by all its production and studio entities.

For the second year in a row, Disney+ leads the way with Lucasfilm Ltd‘s The Mandalorian garnering 24 nominations including Outstanding Dramas Series. Additionally, Disney+’s limited Marvel Studios’ series WandaVision received 23 honors including a nomination for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and nominations for Outstanding Lead Actress (Elizabeth Olsen) and Outstanding Lead Actor (Paul Bettany) in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Similarly, Disney+’s Hamilton became a fan-favorite this year with 12 total nominations including two nods for Outstanding Lead Actor—Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr.—as well as a nomination for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded); and Marvel Studios/Disney+’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier scored five including Don Cheadle’s nod for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series.

Hulu Original The Handmaid’s Tale netted a series-best 21 nominations including Outstanding Drama Series and a Lead Actress nod for Elisabeth Moss, making season four the most nominated season to date. Additionally, Pen15 earned the platform its first Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, and Aidy Bryant earned her first lead actress nomination for Shrill.  Nat Geo scored 13 total nods including Cynthia Erivo’s critically acclaimed performance in Genius: Aretha as well as reality and documentary programming City So Real and Secrets Of The Whales. Whereas FX’s Pose earned 10, including Outstanding Drama Series as well as Outstanding Lead Actor for Billy Porter and a historic first-ever nomination for a transgender nominee for Mj Rodriguez as Outstanding Lead Actress; and much-talked-about The New York Times Presents: Framing Britney Spears scored two nominations including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special.

ABC’s black-ish earned a show-best of six nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and nods for Lead Actor (Anthony Anderson) and Lead Actress (Tracee Ellis Ross). This is Anthony Anderson’s seventh nomination, making him the most nominated Black actor in Emmy history in the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series category. Additional series with multiple nods include 20th Television-produced This Is Us and ABC’s Dancing with the Stars.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nickelodeon is commemorating 25 years of its groundbreaking animated series Blue’s Clues with the greenlight of a brand-new, original movie and an array of anniversary initiatives across multiple platforms. Celebrating one of the most iconic preschool series of all time, which launched on Sept. 8, 1996, the milestone anniversary will also be marked by a multitiered partnership with global nonprofit organization Save the Children, a TV tentpole event, a one-of-a-kind nostalgia-driven music video, exclusive consumer products programs and more, kicking off this summer.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Nickelodeon has greenlit a Blue’s Clues & You! movie that will follow Josh and Blue as they head to New York City to audition for a big Broadway musical. Matt Stawski (Side Effects) is onboard as director of the original as-yet-untitled movie, with writing by Angela C. Santomero (Blue’s Clues franchise, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) and Liz Maccie (Siren, Foxglove). Darlene Caamaño Loquet, Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon Movies, will oversee the production on the film. Nickelodeon Animation Studio will commence production on the movie this summer, with additional details to be announced at a later date.

Nickelodeon has also expanded its partnership with Save the Children, the national leader in helping children prepare for and succeed in school across rural America. Blue’s Clues & You! will help the nonprofit provide learning opportunities and education materials to kids and families in the U.S. through its early childhood education programs.

In addition, Blue’s Clues & You! is featured in Save the Children’s 100 Days of Reading Campaign this summer, with content integration across platforms and on-the-ground activations through the 100 Days of Reading Bus Tour – which is providing fun learning activities and essential education resources to 20,000 children and families. Save the Children will also be Nickelodeon’s prosocial partner for the net’s second annual “Blue Friday,” a day of giving and learning. “Blue Friday” is an initiative that centers around supporting early learning opportunities for kids in need this holiday season. Across America and around the world, Save the Children gives children a healthy start in life, the opportunity to learn and protection from harm. For over 100 years, the nonprofit has been committed to addressing children’s unique and unmet needs, working to ensure they thrive as learners and in life.

Additional Blue’s Clues 25th anniversary highlights include:

•     Two special TV events this fall:

1.         Blue’s Clues & You! “It’s YOUR birthday!” tentpole premiering Friday, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. (ET/PT). In the episode, it’s time to make a wish and blow out the candles, because Blue and her friends are celebrating the birthday of the viewer at home. DJ Slip is spinning the tracks, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper are baking up a cake, and everyone is playing Blue's Clues to figure out what game Blue wants to play at the party. To celebrate the big day, Blue and her friends play 'Pin the Tail on the Puppy' and skidoo to Birthday World to gather prizes to fill a birthday piñata.
2.         Blue’s Clues & You! "Our New Neighbor," premiering Friday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. (ET/PT) and featuring the return of classic fan-favorite character Periwinkle. Josh and Blue play Blue’s Clues to figure out how they can help Periwinkle feel welcome and learn more about their new kitten neighbor along the way, helping him unpack and even skidooing to his old neighborhood to retrieve his missing stuffie.

•     An original 25th anniversary nostalgia-driven music video featuring Blue’s Clues & You! star Josh Dela Cruz and former Blue’s Clues hosts, Donovan Patton and Steve Burns, alongside real-life fans from various generations who grew up on the series. Burns also serves as director of the video.
•     A limited-time, dedicated “Bluetique” at FAO Schwarz’s NYC flagship location in Rockefeller Plaza. For the month of August, the exclusive shop will feature the latest products while showcasing archival Blues Clue's memorabilia, such as Steve’s original rugby shirt, the original Handy Dandy Notebook and more.
•     Launch of the first half of season one (12 episodes) of Blues Clues & You! and the fifth and sixth seasons (40 episodes) of Blue’s Clues on Paramount+ beginning September, joining the first four seasons of Blue’s Clues and seasons one and two of the live-action spin-off Blue’s Room.
•     Over 20 original learning games, ebooks, and interactive episodes available on Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers, where kids can learn and play along with Josh and Blue.
•     An all-day Blue’s Clues marathon on Wednesday, Sept. 8, on the Nick Jr. Pluto TV channel.
•     A new assortment of consumer products inspired by Blue’s Clues & You!, spanning toy, home goods, accessories, DVD and party goods will be available beginning this summer, including a brand-new line of educational toys from Melissa & Doug.
•     Blue’s Clues & You! elements featured at the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts opening this summer in Riviera Maya, including: Blue character meet and greets; sculpture in the Aqua Nick water park; themed merchandise; and various graphics throughout the property. Blue character appearances will also be introduced at the Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Punta Cana.

Blue’s Clues & You! is produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif., and 9 Story Media Group’s Creative Affairs division and its animation studio Brown Bag Films.
