“Home is Where the Hatred Is” Part III: “Manifest Destiny”

Killadelphia is an apocalyptic vampire and dark fantasy comic book series from writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander and is published by Image Comics.  At the center of this series is a police officer caught in a lurid conspiracy in which vampires attempt to rule Philadelphia, “the City of Brotherly Love.”  Colorist Luis Nct and letterer Marshall Dillon complete Killadelphia's creative team.

Killadelphia focuses on James “Jim” Sangster, Jr. and his father, revered Philadelphia homicide detective, James Sangster, Sr., thought to be dead.  He is actually a vampire.  Now father and son lead a ragtag team comprised of a medical examiner, a dead president, and a rebellious, but special young vampire (Tevin Thompkins a.k.a. “See Saw”) in a bid to save Philly from an ambitious and murderous former First Lady.

As Killadelphia #15 (“Manifest Destiny”) opens, there is a new vampire player in town, and it's another “Founding Father” and former president.  Meet Tom Jefferson.  He has a tale to tell, philosophically, of course, and he is making a claim on the throne.

Elsewhere, Toppy and the rest of Abigail Adams' inner circle invade the Sangsters' sanctum.  Oh, they also want to know where See Saw has gone, but isn't that his body, all curled up on the floor?  Meanwhile, See Saw is meeting important religious figures like Jesus (who is Black), but he may have to go back to an original god to get the help and the answers he seeks.

THE LOWDOWN:  Killadelphia hits the midway point of its third story arc, “Home is Where the Hatred Is.”  After the pyrotechnics of the previous story arc, “Burn Baby Burn,” this new story line started with a focus on family – damned and otherwise, but now, its pyrotechnics begin.

I find myself endlessly fascinated by writer Rodney Barnes' plots, but sometimes, I really get a chance to admire how he drops history, religion, culture, politics, and philosophy, scattered like drops of enlightening blood throughout his scripts.  That he has brought Thomas Jefferson into play shows that Killadelphia is not growing cold, but will keep surprising and scaring us.

Artist Jason Shawn Alexander and colorist Luis Nct dance through Barnes' script bringing each scene or sequence into life with its own unique look.  From lurid to luminescent, Killadelphia is a comic book of different worlds and different textures and moods and not a place where things are from a melting pot...

Killadelphia #15 is a another great chapter, and you should be reading it, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of vampire comic books and of exceptional dark fantasy will want Killadelphia.

Comics Review: "RED ROOM: The Antisocial Network #2" Shows a Deadly Poker Face

Red Room: The Antisocial Network is a 12-issue new comic book series from cartoonist Ed Piskor.  Piskor is best known for Hip Hop Family Tree, a comic book that chronicles the early history of Hip-hop culture and that has been published in both graphic novel and serial comic book form.  Piskor also produced a highly unusual history of Marvel Comics' X-Men via a series of comic book miniseries entitled X-Men Grand Design.

Publisher Fantagraphics Books describes Red Room: The Antisocial Network as “a cyberpunk, outlaw, splatterpunk masterpiece.”  Red Room focuses on a murderous, dark web subculture in which a secretive audience pays to view webcam murders with crypto-currency.  A “Red Room” is a place on the Internet with an encrypted I.P. address.  Each Red Room is a webcam stream where viewers can watch a “torture star” murder another human being in the most brutal, savage, vile, and stomach-turning ways.  With the help of untraceable crypto-currency, a subculture of criminals has emerged in which one side patronizes the webcam murders for entertainment and in which the other side gleefully kills to entertain in what seems like the evolution of the snuff films of folklore.

As Red Room: The Antisocial Network #2 opens, Pentagram Pictures streams the latest act of butchery from torture star, “Decimator.”  Elsewhere, former multiple Super Bowl champion, Mike Wilkins, is using a flood rescue as a “recruiting mission” to help the people behind torture star, “Poker Face,” find their next Red Room victim.  So how do you turn a guy named Damian into a victim no one will recognize?  You force Doctor Daniels, plastic surgeon, to work on him … because Poker Face needs fresh meat!

THE LOWDOWN:  Red Room is a science fiction comic book series, albeit a dark one.  It has elements of dystopian sci-fi, speculative fiction, and contemporary drama.  It would be easy to call this new series depraved, which it is not.  In a real world in which rich people want what they want and have the super-wealth to get it, the darkest corners of the web will one day offer murder and mayhem like that seen Red Room.  Or maybe it already is.  Each ISIS beheading was Internet ready.

Red Room #2 is a stand alone issue, as was the first issue.  In fact, the entire series will be comprised of stand alone, single-issue tales that are part of a larger narrative world.  This issue, Piskor, with this story of Damian as a man who needs to be saved (several times), tugs at the heart as much as Poker Face will tug on his intestines.  What keeps Red Room from being a joke or torture porn is that Piskor can depict humanity in the the most embarrassing and most horrifying scenes.

Here is something that I noticed before, but to which I never really paid attention.  For a cartoonist, Piskor is an exceptionally skilled illustrator.  From perspective to figure drawing, Piskor's compositions are full of exaggeration and surrealism, but everything and everyone looks correctly drawn (for instance, the floodwaters sequence).  It is a kind of cartoon realism that not everyone could pull off … realistically.  So I highly recommend, Red Room: The Antisocial Network to you, dear readers.  Don't be antisocial and not read Red Room.  Reviews and quotes don't really capture the complex and multi-layered nature of this title.

CBS Television Network, CBS Studios and Paramount+ together received a total of 35 Primetime Emmy nominations:

•     CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” – the #1 late night talk show on television – received five nominations, marking the series’ 18th Emmy nomination to date.
•     CBS landed several nominations for talent and special programming, including “Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” and “John Lewis: Celebrating A Hero.” “The Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show Starring The Weeknd” and “The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards” also received multiple nods this year. For her starring role in “Mom,” Allison Janney was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
•     CBS Studios received 21 nominations, among them an Outstanding Competition Series nod for “The Amazing Race.” Short-form series “Carpool Karaoke: The Series” was also nominated.
•     Paramount+, together with CBS Studios, picked up six nominations this season, including four nominations for “Star Trek: Discovery.” “Star Trek: Lower Decks'' and “Stephen Colbert Presents Tooning Out the News'' each received their first-ever Emmy nominations.

ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Group landed 20 Primetime Emmy nominations across its portfolio of MTV, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, Smithsonian Channel, CMT and VH1:

•     Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” received nods for Outstanding Variety Talk Series plus Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and “South Park” was also nominated for Outstanding Animated Program.
•     VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” earned 11 nominations this year, including Outstanding Competition Series, and two nominations for its aftershow, “RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked.”
•     Paramount Network’s “Yellowstone” and MTV Documentary Films’ “76 Days” each earned its first-ever Emmy nomination.

CANNES - From Variety:  At the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, the "Palme d'Or" goes to director Julia Ducournau's horror film, "Titane."

BOX OFFICE - From Variety:   The animated/live-action hybrid film, "Space Jam: A New Legacy," which stars NBA mega-star, LeBron James, is set to win the weekend box office over Disney's "Black Widow."

From Deadline:   Rapper, singer, DJ, and actor, Biz Markie, has died at the age of 57, Friday, July 16, 2021.  Biz was best known for the hit song, "Just a Friend" (1989), which was a top ten hit on the "Billboard Hot 100" music chart was certified platinum.

From Deadline:  Rock guitarist, Jeff LaBar, has died at the age of 58, Wednesday, July 14, 2021.  LaBar was best known as a guitarist for the 1980s hair/glam metal band, "Cinderella," which he joined in 1985, replacing an original member, Michael Schermick.  LaBar played on all four of Cinderella's four studio albums and was a fixture with the band during its heyday from the mid-1980s to the 1990.

From Variety:   Veteran television and film actor, Charlie Robinson, has died at the age of 75, Monday, July 12, 2021.  Wilson was best known for his role as clerk court, "Mac Robinson," in the former NBC sitcom, "Night Court" (1984-92), beginning in the series second season.  Wilson was a series regular or had a recurring role in a number of other sitcoms, including "Buffalo Bill," "Love & War," "Home Improvement," and "Mom," to name a few.

“2467”

The Silver Coin is a horror comic book anthology and miniseries published by Image Comics.  It is the creation of artist Michael Walsh and writers Ed Brisson, Jeff Lemire, Kelly Thompson, and Chip Zdarsky.  Each issue of this five-issue miniseries tells a tale of terror that is set in a supernatural world in which the mysterious “Silver Coin” changes the lives of those who take possession of it.  The fourth issue is written by Jeff Lemire; drawn and lettered by Michael Walsh; and colored by Walsh and Toni Marie Griffin.

The Silver Coin #4 (entitled “2467”) opens in the year 2467.  The new metropolis of this new world has buried the old world beneath its junk and refuse.  A trio of scavengers are on the run from Officer Colten Dudley and his remote controlled drone (called a “bird”).  But one of these scavengers is going to discover an ancient treasure.  The price it carries is unimaginable, and everyone may end up paying that price.

THE LOWDOWN:  As I wrote in my reviews of the first three issues of The Silver Coin, I am a big fan of horror comic book anthologies.  That includes everything from the classic EC Comics titles to later titles like DC Comics' Ghosts and House of Mystery, Kitchen Sink Press's Death Rattle, and Approbation Comics' Amour, to name a few.

“2467,” the offering in The Silver Coin #4, surpasses the stories offered in issues #2 and #3.  Jeff Lemire, who has written some outstanding science fiction comics, including Sweet Tooth, offers a tale that shows that the past isn't always history – a thing long gone – even if we have forgotten that past.

Once again, Michael Walsh's art and graphical storytelling are what really delivers the unsettling moments in this tale.  The “worms” which the citizens of this world use to connect to each other as if each person were a device, are both nasty and chilling.  I think the world of “2467” is worth some expansion.  Dear readers, let's come back for the finale and see what's in store.

Comics Review: "POST AMERICANA #6" is a Wonder of Violence

Post Americana is a seven-issue miniseries written and drawn by Steve Skroce and published by Image Comics.  Post Americana is set in a dystopian future and focuses on two rebels' attempts to save an area called the “Wasteland” from a rogue President of the United States.  Colorist Dave Stewart and letterer Fonografiks complete Post Americana's creative team.

Post Americana has two settings.  The first is “The Bubble,” an installation inside the Cheyenne Mountains that is the most sophisticated super-bunker in the world.  Inside, Nathaniel Hawksworthe, the new President of the United States, plans to use the bunker's resources to build the “New America” by basically paving over the second setting, the “Wasteland.”  Determined to stop Hawksworthe are Michael “Mike” Lee, a hapless rebel, and Carolyn, a deadly Wasteland girl, who is already hellbent on revenge against the denizens of the Bubble.  But Carolyn and Mike will have to survive the Wasteland in order to save the Wasteland.

As Post Americana #6 opens, Carolyn, Mike, and Evey face betrayal in the form of the wrath of Night Terror and his partner, Donny (a vicious werewolf).  On the lost coast of California, the trio found Wonder Studios (a Walt Disney-like studio), and thought that they had found a refuge.  Can Mister Floppibottoms and Eggbert save our heroes?

Meanwhile, things are starting to take a dark turn in the Bubble.  What shall we make of Hawksworthe's crazy story of his apparently crazier past?  The future hangs in the balance!

THE LOWDOWN:  As a reminder:  I am a huge fan of writer-artist Steve Skroce, going back over two decades.  All the while that I have been reviewing this series, I have regaled you, dear readers, with the joys of reading Post Americana.

It turns out that Post Americana #5 was NOT the penultimate issue of the series.  The former six-issue miniseries is now seven issues long.  A similar thing happened with Skroce's previous creator-owned Image series, Maestro, so this issue, Post Americana #6 is the penultimate issues.

Issue #5 seemed divorced from the rest of the narrative, but issue #6 brings it all back, connecting the Wonder Series subplot with a jarring turn in the story of the Bubble and its ruler.  Who knows what to expect of issue #7, but, in the meantime, Skroce delivers a high-octane, violent, action movie sixth issue.  As always his kinetic drawing style and bracing graphic storytelling is perfect for the ol' ultra-violence depicted here.

I can't wait for the seventh issue.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Steve Skroce's comics and of post-apocalyptic sci-fi will want Post Americana.
