“The Red Mass” Book 5: “Now You See Her, Now You Don't!”

Vampirella is a vampire and female superhero created by the late author and science fiction and horror expert, Forrest J Ackerman, and designed by comic book artist, Trina Robbins.  Vampirella first appeared in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969), the debut issue of a black and white horror comics magazine from Warren Publishing.  Writer-editor Archie Goodwin changed the character from a hostess of horror comics to a leading character in her own stories.

Vampirella publications were published by Warren into 1983, and after Warren's bankruptcy, Harris Publications obtained the character and published new and reprint Vampirella comic books into the mid-1990s.  In 2010, Dynamite Entertainment obtained the character and has been publishing new Vampirella material since then.

Dynamite's latest Vampirella comic book series is Vampiverse.  The series is written by Thomas Sniegoski and Jeannine Acheson; drawn by Daniel Maine; colored by Francesca Cittarelli; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  In this new series, a Vampirella from one universe must travel the “Threads of the Fabric” and gather Vampirellas from other universes.  Their goal is to stop Bloodwing, a Vampirella who wants to kill all the other Vampirellas and also the Creator of all things, who is also known as “God” or “the Artist.”

Vampiverse Volume 1 #5 (“Now You See Her, Now You Don't!”) opens in London, 1940.  There, Agent Vampirella a.k.a. “Agent Invisirella” seeks to steal documents that will stop the Reich of Chaos.  The documents, however, are also missing pages from the “Book of Prophecy,” and Bloodwing wants them.

Meanwhile, in the Stone Age, the Vampirellas have formed a team.  There is the supernatural detective, “The Vamp,” a Vampirella who is a pulp-style hero in the vein of the old time radio and pulp fiction legend, The Shadow.  There is Lilith, the daughter of a Vampirella recently killed by Bloodwing.  The next two are “Vamp-Por,” the Vampirella from the dawn of time, and Futurella of the Reality Corp., the science fiction Vampirella.  As soon as their bond is formed, they must battle the “Chaos Beasts” in order to retrieve “Vesper,” Futurella's ship.

Meanwhile, Bloodwing, with her hostage, “Book” (the “Book of Prophecy” personified as a disembodied boy), reaches “the Library.”  Can Vampirella and her sisters of Draculon find the Library in time to stop Bloodwing?

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Vampiverse Volume 1 #5, one of a growing number of Vampirella comic books that I have recently read.

After a shaky first issue, Vampiverse kicked into high gear with its second through fourth issues.  Now, we come to the fifth and penultimate issue.  Writers Thomas Sniegoski and Jeannine Acheson have thrown their readers into the fire as they prepare to blow their minds with this last chapter before the finale.  Plus, they throw in a shocker – a look at who God might be...  Vampiverse is certainly giving Vampirella fans their money's worth.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comics will want to read Vampiverse Volume 1.

Nyx created by Tom Sniegoski and Ed McGuinness

“Demon in a Bottle”

Nyx is a Vampirella comic book character.  She is the daughter of Chaos the Mad God and a human woman, making Nyx half-demon and half-human, but she needs to feed on human life force in order to live.  Nyx was created by writer Tom Sniegoski and artist Ed McGuinness and first appeared in Harris Comics' Vengeance of Vampirella #23 (cover dated: February 1996).  She is a longtime enemy and sometimes friend of Vampirella.

The character now has her own solo comic book series, entitled Nyx.  It is written by Christos Gage; drawn by Marc Borstel; colored by Jordi Escuin Llorach; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  The series finds Nyx dealing with her emerging human side, although her demon side is still powerful and hungry for human life force.

Nyx #3 (“Demon in a Bottle”) opens in the wake of Nyx's battle and conversation with her father, the Mad God Chaos.  Now, it's time for a new battle.  Nyx once killed Vampirella, but more recently, they were tenuous allies.

Now, their paths have crossed again, so will it be as friends, enemies, somewhere in between, or all of the above?  Nyx is on a quest to learn how to live among humanity without harming them, and she thinks Vampirella can give her some advice on that.  However, this is something Vampirella herself has never quite mastered?  It's a monster girls' night out – complete with binge drinking and and puking.  Plus, friends of the father decide to crash the par-tay!

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Nyx #3, the third issue of the series that I have read.

Nyx #1 was a powerful first issue, and Nyx #2 also had power.  For this third issue, writer Christos Gage brings in a special guest star, Vampirella, for some fun, and ultimately, “Demon in a Bottle,” is indeed a rather fun read.  This issue is also a good stand-alone (mostly) tale – a jumping-on point – that can introduce new readers to this excellent series.

Marc Borstel's art and Jordi Escuin Llorach's colors are perfect for this action-packed and comedy-packed issue.  Their unique graphical storytelling take on this series makes it stand out from the Dynamite pack.  I highly recommend Nyx for those looking for good comic books.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comic books will want to try Nyx.

Based on the characters and stories created by Roy Thomas, Barry Windsor-Smith, and Robert E. Howard

Conan the Barbarian #23 (cover dated: February 1973) saw the debut of a high fantasy, sword and sorcery heroine, Red Sonja.  Created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith, Red Sonja was loosely based on “Red Sonya of Rogatino,” a female character that appeared in the 1934 short story, “The Shadow of the Vulture,” written by Robert E. Howard (1906-1936), the creator of the character, Conan the Cimmerian.

Red Sonja remained a fixture in comic books from then until about 1986.  In 2005, Dynamite Entertainment began publishing comic books featuring differing versions of the character.  One of those is a spin-off title, Hell Sonja.  The series is written by Christopher Hastings; drawn by Pasquale Qualano; colored by Kike J. Diaz; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  The series finds Hell Sonja and company filling Hell's belly with would-be conquerors.

Hell Sonja #1 finds that the god that ruled Hell is dead, but Hell still hungers.  Now, the champions of the dead god are filling the belly of Hell with those most deserving of punishment.  Hrodulf, Usher of Doom and his henchman, Firmen, Sorcerer of Perversion, are deserving.

Enter Red Sonja, Blue Sonja, Moon Sonja, Gold Sonja, and Purple Sonja.  They are bound together by Hell Sonja, the Queen of Damnation.  If someone so wicked is beset upon you, if you're desperate enough, if no one else can help, maybe your prayers will be heard by Hell Sonja!

THE LOWDOWN:   In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Hell Sonja #1, which is one of several Red Sonja-related comic books that I have read

Hell Sonja is the follow-up to the Sonjaversal comic book series with the same creative team.  I think that this first issue is merely an introduction to the basic concept.  So far, Hell Sonja #1 seems like Sonjaversal with a new title, but I'm curious to see where this goes.  I don't have more to say about it at this point, but I'll see what happens next.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Red Sonja and of Sonjaversal will want to try Hell Sonja.

Review: "THE CONJURING: The Devil Made Me Do It" is Crazy and Scary as Hell

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 1 of 2022 (No. 1813) by Leroy Douresseaux

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Running time:  112 minutes (1 hour, 52 minutes)
MPAA – R for terror, violence and some disturbing images
DIRECTOR:  Michael Chaves
WRITERS:  David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick; from a story by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan (based on characters created by Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes)
PRODUCERS:  Peter Safran and James Wan
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Michael Burgess (D.o.P.)
EDITORS:  Peter Gvozdas and Christian Wagner
COMPOSER:  Joseph Bishara

HORROR

Starring:  Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ruairi O'Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook, Julian Hilliard, John Noble, Eugenie Bondurant, Shannon Kook, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Keith Arthur Bolden, and Sterling Jerins

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is a 2021 supernatural horror film from director Michael Chaves.  The film is a direct sequel to 2016's The Conjuring 2 and is the third film in The Conjuring series and also the eighth film in “The Conjuring Universe.”  Once again, actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play fictional versions of real life, American paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren.  In The Devil Made Me Do It, the Warrens investigate a murder linked to demonic possession.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It opens on July 18, 1981 in Brookfield, Connecticut.  Noted paranormal investigators, Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), are assisting in and documenting in the exorcism of eight-year-old David Glatzel (Julian Hilliard), which is being performed a Catholic priest.  The exorcism is also attended by David's parents; his sister, Debbie (Sarah Catherine Hook), her boyfriend, Arne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor).  During the exorcism, the demon transports itself into Arne.  Ed witnesses this, but suffers a heart attack and falls into an unconscious state before he can warn anyone.

The following month, Ed wakes up at the hospital and reveals to Lorraine that he witnessed the demon enter Arne's body.  Meanwhile, Arne and Debbie have returned to their apartment located above Brookfield Boarding Kennels where Debbie works.  After feeling unwell, Arne murders the kennel's owner, Bruno Sauls (Ronnie Gene Blevins).  Arne is facing a capitol murder charge that could earn him the death sentence.  The Warrens insist that Arne's attorney defend him by claiming demonic possession as a defense.  Meanwhile, the Warrens have to find evidence that helps prove that Arne was possessed when he killed Bruno.  However, Ed and Lorraine are about to discover that in this investigation, they have both a human and a demonic adversary.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is based on the events surrounding the real life murder trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson in Connecticut in 1981.  The film's narrative may also correspond with The Devil in Connecticut, a 1983 book about the trial written by Gerald Brittle.  Brittle is currently suing Warner Bros. and other parties, claiming they infringed upon his 1980 book about the Warrens, The Demonologist.

One thing that I have found is that The Conjuring film series is super-scary even when I don't focus on the Warrens' real-life investigations in which these film are supposedly based.  And The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is no less scary than the previous films in the series.  In fact, The Devil Made Me Do It may be the darkest entry in the series because it deals with horrendous human evil.  Director Michael Chaves wrings bone-chilling, heart-stopping terror from the horrific set pieces that make up The Devil Made Me Do It's narrative.  There is a sequence in a funeral home that had me glued to my chair, but I won't say more.  The fewer spoilers I offer, the more terror you will feel, dear readers.

Once again, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson give excellent performances as the Warrens.  They have the gift of making the Warrens seem like two eccentrics who are not only a loving couple, but are also ass-kicking demon fighters.  The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is the kind of supernatural horror film that is as frightening as the best slasher horror films – with less bloodshed.  I hope The Conjuring series returns for a fourth time... and many more after that.
