Based on the characters and stories created by Ian Fleming

James Bond” is a fictional British Secret Service agent created by Ian Fleming, a British writer and novelist.  Fleming introduced James Bond in the 1953 novel, Casino Royale, and featured the character in 12 novels and two short-story collections.  Of course, most people know Bond because of Eon Productions' long-running James Bond-007 film series, which began with the 1962 film, Dr. No.

Over the past 50+ years, Bond has made sporadic appearances in comic books, but Dynamite Entertainment has been steadily publishing James Bond comic books since early 2016.  Their latest James Bond comic book is James Bond: Himeros.  It is written by Rodney Barnes; drawn alternately by Antonio Ruso, Pierluigi Minotti, and Giorgio Pontrelli; colored by Adriano Augusto; and lettered by Social Myth Studios.  In Himeros, 007's struggles to save a woman from Anton Bates, a military arms dealer who wants to keep secret his connections to billionaire financier and notorious sex trafficker, the late Richard Wilhelm, from coming to light.

James Bond: Himeros #5 opens on Wilhelm's island.  There, Bond makes his last stand to protect Sarah Richmond, Wilhelm's right hand man and keeper of his secrets.  That means taking on Bates' assassin, Kino.  Bond knows that by the end of this, not everyone is walking away with their lives.

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is James Bond: Himeros #5, which is one of several Dynamite James Bond comic books I've read.

James Bond: Himeros #5 is the final issue of the series, and writer Rodney Barnes offers an ending so explosive that it might … blow your minds.  Barnes' certainly ends Himeros better than No Time to Die ended actor Daniel Craig's run as movies James Bond.  Still, readers may find Barnes' take on Bond to be as tough as thuggish as Craig's.

Giorgio Pontrelli proves to be the best of the three artists that drew this series.  Pontrelli draws this final chapter in widescreen which gives the story a cinematic effect, and the art makes Barnes' story hit with two-fisted authority.

I would like to see Barnes and Pontrelli attack another James Bond comic book with the same storytelling ferocity.  This comic book miniseries feels like classic Bond, and it certainly reminds me of the Bond prose that I have read.  “Himeros” is the Greek god of sexual desire, and after reading James Bond: Himeros, dear readers, I am horny for more.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of James Bond comic books will want to try James Bond: Himeros.

“The Red Mass” Book 6: “To All Things...”

Vampirella is a vampire and female superhero created by the late author and science fiction and horror expert, Forrest J Ackerman, and designed by comic book artist, Trina Robbins.  Vampirella first appeared in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969), the debut issue of a black and white horror comics magazine from Warren Publishing.  Writer-editor Archie Goodwin changed the character from a hostess of horror comics to a leading character in her own stories.

Vampirella publications were published by Warren into 1983, and after Warren's bankruptcy, Harris Publications obtained the character and published new and reprint Vampirella comic books into the mid-1990s.  In 2010, Dynamite Entertainment obtained the character and has been publishing new Vampirella material since then.

Dynamite's latest Vampirella comic book series is Vampiverse.  The series is written by Thomas Sniegoski and Jeannine Acheson; drawn by Daniel Maine; colored by Francesca Cittarelli; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  In this new series, a Vampirella from one universe must travel the “Threads of the Fabric” and gather Vampirellas from other universes.  Their goal is to stop Bloodwing, a Vampirella who wants to kill all the other Vampirellas and also the Creator of all things, who is also known as “God” or “the Artist.”

Vampiverse Volume 1 #6 (“To All Things...”) opens in Loveland, Ohio.  There, we find the house of “The Artist,” the one who weaves the fabric of creation and tells the stories … of Vampirella.  But the artist is ailing.

Meanwhile, in the trans-dimensional place known as “The Library,” the receptacle for all the stories of the weave, a battle rages against Bloodwing, the Vampirella who would kill all other Vampirellas, as well as the Artist.  Vampirellas of hundreds of realities have gathered to take on Bloodwing's army.  Can these daughters of Drakulon save the fabrics of reality?

Now, however, it is time for Vampirella and Bloodwing to meet the Artist, their God, so to speak.  So what does Trina Forrest have to say and what are her plans for her characters?  Or will Bloodwing vanquish them all and reshape their stories in her own glorious, twisted image?

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Vampiverse Volume 1 #6, one of a growing number of Vampirella comic books that I have recently read.

Writers Thomas Sniegoski and Jeannine Acheson offer a final issue that is so enjoyable that I wish Vampiverse was not ending.  They made this series of myriad versions of Vampirella and the one who wanted to rule them all (Bloodwing) fun, if for no other reason than to just meet new characters.

Vampiverse is certainly giving Vampirella fans their money's worth.  Hopefully, something like it will appear again.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comics will want to read Vampiverse Volume 1.

Comics Review: "Nyx #4" is Another Good Issue in a Really Good Series

Nyx created by Tom Sniegoski and Ed McGuinness

“Deranged Tales”

Nyx is a Vampirella comic book character.  She is the daughter of Chaos the Mad God and a human woman, making Nyx half-demon and half-human, but she needs to feed on human life force in order to live.  Nyx was created by writer Tom Sniegoski and artist Ed McGuinness and first appeared in Harris Comics' Vengeance of Vampirella #23 (cover dated: February 1996).  She is a longtime enemy and sometimes friend of Vampirella.

The character now has her own solo comic book series, entitled Nyx.  It is written by Christos Gage; drawn by Marc Borstel; colored by Jordi Escuin Llorach; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  The series finds Nyx dealing with her emerging human side, although her demon side is still powerful and hungry for human life force.

As Nyx #4 (“Deranged Tales”) opens, Nyx is at “St. John's Occult Emporium.”  There, she hopes that the proprietor, St. John, a human sorcerer, will remove her human side – with the help of the powerful occult book, “The Crimson Chronicles.”  But, of course, the eager St. John has plans of his own.

Also, Nyx meets her first Pendragon.  Yes, it's Victoria Pendragon, the great-granddaughter of “Pendragon the Great,” Vampirella's old partner in a stage act.  Victoria is also a hunter of monsters and demons, so does Nyx fit that description?

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Nyx #4, the fourth issue of the series that I have read.

Christos Gage has made Nyx a thoroughly enjoyable comic book to read.  It has lots of dark fantasy action-violence, for those who need that, but the comic book is also more than that.  It seems like a narrative about relationships and about characters getting to know one another, with a mixture of fantasy and comedy.  I find myself interested in learning more about both Nyx and whichever guest pops up in a particular issue.

Marc Borstel's art and Jordi Escuin Llorach's colors strike the perfect storytelling tone for both the series' fantasy elements and for the character drama.  The art is clear and emotive, and the colors make the story hum with magic and feeling.  I implore you, dear readers, to read Nyx.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comic books will want to try Nyx.
