“Greece and Desist”

Bettie Page (1923–2008) was an American model who gained notoriety in the 1950s for her pin-up photos.  She is still referred to has the “Queen of Pinups,” and her shoulder-to-armpit-length jet-black hair with its trademark bangs and her blue eyes have inspired generations of artists, illustrators and comic book artists.

In 2017, Dynamite Entertainment made Bettie Page the star of her own comic book miniseries.  The latest is Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6.  It is written by Ani-Mia; drawn by Celor; colored by Farah Nurmaliza; and lettered by Carlos M. Mangual.  The series finds Bettie searching for answers concerning an alien conspiracy.

Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6 #3 (“Greece and Desist”) opens on the island of Crete, Greece.  Following a nearly deadly escapade in the pyramid of Djoser at the Saqqara Necropolis in Egypt, Bettie and her team, Young-ja and Sofia, cautiously jet off to their next clue location in Greece.

This time, the ladies set out on their own, without backup, and hope that they are better prepared to handle any traps that may await them.  Inside the ruins of the ancient Greek Palace of Knossos, Bettie and company will find that the answers are hard to come by and there is not much time to find them.

THE LOWDOWN:   In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  The latest is Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6 #3, which is the sixth issue of a Dynamite Bettie Page comic book that I have read.

Writer Ani-Mia (the pen name of Mia McLaughlin) offers an easy pace for Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda.  The story is Indiana Jones light, with a plot that vaguely resembles the film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls.  Ani-Mia does not provide the big action set pieces that the film offers, but mystery, puzzles, and traps pop up with regularity.

Celor's calm and smooth storytelling carries readers along on this delightful adventure.  There is something alluring here about the way Celor tells this story.  Dear readers, if you are into the legends surrounding the Roswell crash, you may be interested in trying Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda.  I, for one, love this comic book.  I am ready for another issue.

BOX OFFICE - From Deadline:  "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" has grossed $86 million at the international box office after two days of release.

SCANDAL/TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Disney has fired Fred Savage as executive producer and director of ABC's freshman TV series, "The Wonder Years" for "inappropriate conduct."  Savage was the star of the original version of "The Wonder Years" from 1988-93.

From Deadline:  Actress Alley Mills, who played the family matriarch on the original version of "The Wonder Years," says that the series was cancelled for what she called a ridiculous harassment lawsuit against then 16-year old lead, Fred Savage, and his co-star, then 20-year old Jason Hervey.

POLITICS/TELEVISION - From NYPost:  Five Republican U.S. Senators want TV ratings updated to warn parents about shows with LGBTQ characters and have sent a letter to the "TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board" asking for a TV ratings overhaul.

From Deadline:  Country singer and actress, Naomi Judd, has died at the age of 76, Saturday, April 30, 2022.  Naomi and her elder daughter, Wynonna, formed the award-winning country music duo, "The Judds" in 1983.  They released six studio albums from 1984 to 1990 and won five Grammy Awards from 1985 to 1992. Naomi also won a Grammy in the category of "Best Country Song" for co-writing the song, "Love Can Build a Bridge."  As an actress, Naomi made guest appearances on several TV series, including "3rd Rock from the Sun" and "Touched by an Angel." Naomi's young daughter is Oscar-nominated actress, Ashley Judd.

From People: "Sources" have apparently told "People" magazine that Naomi Judd died by suicide Sat. April 30th.

From Deadline:  Actor Mike Hagerty has died at the age of 67, Friday, April 29, 2022.  He was best known for playing the building super, "Mr. Treeger," in NBC's late sitcom, "Friends," and a used clothing store owner in NBC's former sitcom, "Seinfeld."  He was currently seen in HBO's "Someboyd Somewhere."

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2022 superhero, action, and horror-fantasy film directed by Sam Raimi and produced by Marvel Studios.  It is the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and is also a sequel to the 2016 superhero movie, Doctor Strange.  Both films focus on the Marvel Comics character, Doctor Strange, who first appeared in the comic book, Strange Tales #10 (cover dated: July 1963), and who was created by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee.  In the new film, Doctor Strange battles to protect the Multiverse and a young woman who can travel through it.

As Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens, Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is plagued by dreams in which he finds himself involved with a mysterious young woman.  But life goes on.  Wong (Benedict Wong), Strange's friend and mentor, is now Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.  Also, Stephen's former lover, Dr. Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams), is getting married, and he is attending the wedding.

During the wedding, an octopus demon wreaks havoc in the neighborhood, and Stephen meets the young woman again.  Her name is America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), and she can travel through the Multiverse by punching doorways through dimensions.  Demonic forces are tracking her, and Strange believes that only the Book of Vishanti can stop these demons.  Dr. Strange turns to an expert for help, the former Avenger, Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).  However, the mastermind behind the attacks on America is quite powerful, and the identity of this attacker is quite surprising.

And things only get worse.  Dr. Strange must face his old adversary, Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) … something called “the Illuminati” … and multiple versions of himself.

I have come across complaints that Marvel Studios' films are formulaic and complaints that the studios' films are not “director-driven” (whatever that means).  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not like other Marvel films, and at least to me, it seems “director-driven.”

The director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is Sam Raimi, who is best known for directing Sony/Columbia Picture's first trilogy of Spider-Man films (2002-07).  Before then, Raimi's best known work was the “Evil Dead” trilogy, comprised of Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead II (1987), and Army of Darkness (1993).  And Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seems like a superhero film built on the aesthetic or, at least, the sensibilities of the “Evil Dead” trilogy.  In fact, this Doctor Strange film is like an Evil Dead movie with the budget of a … well, Marvel Studios movie.  Even more than his Spider-Man films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the truest Sam Raimi superhero movie to date.

I don't want to spoil much more than I already have, but I can say that the VFX in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is not only superb, but also inventive and imaginative.  Of course, the productions values are quite good; once again, I must say that everything looks like it would in a Raimi Evil Dead movie with mega-event, tent-pole film's budget.  Also, Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen give superb performances, especially Olsen.

In spite of what Marvel Studios and Disney may say, however, I am not sure what the impact of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actually is.  I really like this movie because it really IS a Sam Raimi movie, and I love his movies.  But, is this Doctor Strange film as consequential to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man: No Way Home seems to be...?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seems most important because of what it promises – new tomorrows, new worlds, new heroes, new movies … and hopefully more Sam Raimi Marvel movies.  I am thankful that Marvel Studios allowed him to make this movie.  Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is better than the original film, and it is Marvel's weirdest movie to date – a thrill ride of delightful and inspired wackiness.  Plus, it gives some of us what we hoped that the original would – a true dark fantasy/horror Doctor Strange movie.

Review: "NIGHTMARE ALLEY" is One of 2021's Very Best Films

Nightmare Alley is a 2021 neo-noir crime thriller and drama directed by Guillermo del Toro.  The film is an adaptation of the 1946 novel, Nightmare Alley, which was written by William Lindsay Gresham.  Nightmare Alley the film focuses on a drifter who works his way from low-ranking carnival employee to acclaimed psychic medium on his way to his self-made doom.

Nightmare Alley opens in 1939 and introduces Stanton “Stan” Carlisle (Bradley Cooper).  A drifter, Stan gets a job at a carnival operated by Clement “Clem”Hoatley (Willem Dafoe).  He begins working with the carnival's clairvoyant act, “Madame Zeena,” (Toni Collette) and her alcoholic husband, Peter “Pete” Krumbein (David Strathairn).  They use coded language and cold reading tricks, which Pete keeps in a secret book.  Although Pete teaches tricks to Stan, he also warns him against using these tricks to be a mentalist that pretends to speak to the dead, known as a “spookshow.”

Stan becomes attracted to a fellow performer, Mary Margaret “Molly” Cahill (Rooney Mara), and he eventually convinces her to leave with him.  Two years later, Stan has successfully reinvented himself with a psychic act for the wealthy elite of Buffalo, and Molly is his assistant.  His act has attracted the attention of consulting psychologist, Dr. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett), and she is determined to reveal him as a fraud.  Thus, begins a cat and mouse game between Stan and Lilith that will destroy lives.

Nightmare Alley is not the first film adaptation of William Lindsay Gresham's novel.  Hollywood legend Tyrone Power starred in a 1947 version in a bid to escape from the kinds of films (romance and adventure) that had made him a Hollywood star, but had also relegated him to the same kinds of roles (romantic leads and swashbuckling heroes).  From what I have read, Guillermo del Toro's 2021 version is more faithful to original novel than the 1947 film.

Some excellent and even great films are ruined or nearly ruined by their endings.  Del Toro's Nightmare Alley is solidified as a great film because of its ending, which brings back elements from the beginning of the film.  Bradley Cooper's Stan Carlisle is a doomed fool, a man consumed by greed and self-interest.  As his lust for power and greed for money and fame become more evident, Nightmare Alley turns truly prophetic.  A con man's ultimate mark is himself, and Stan never paid attention to the warnings, especially those that came when he first started working for Clem.

Although Cooper's status as the lead actor playing the lead character allows him to deliver a powerful performance, others in Nightmare Alley are also quite good.  Toni Collette, always good, is lovely here as the saintly, whorish, motherly Madame Zeena, while David Strathairn, also always good, is excellent as the pitiful prophet and father figure, Pete.  Cate Blanchett, decked in top notch hair and make-up and costumes, is the femme fatale as demoness, Lilith Ritter.  The film's best performance, however, is delivered by Rooney Mara, who in subtle shades and quiet gestures represents kind people in this film.  In a film determined to be dark and condemning, Mara's Molly is the film's humanity and hope.

As usual, Nightmare Alley offers Del Toro's haunting gothic visuals.  The production design, cinematography, costume design, and hair and make-up all capture this film's clash of vistas:  Depression-era destitution against a world of wealth, opulence, privilege, and corruption that ignored the poverty and decay right under their noses.  From ragged carnival garb to fabulous raiment; from the rundown world of carnies to the glow of swanky nightclubs:  Nightmare Alley is a vision of the darkness beneath the American dream and its illusions of wealth and power.  I have a few quibbles with Nightmare Alley, finding it a bit too dry, cold, and brittle in places.  Still, Nightmare Alley is another great film by the master of illusions, director Guillermo del Toro.

Sitha is a female character that debuted in Red Sonja Volume 6 #1, and she was created by comic book superstar Mirka Andolfo.  Red Sonja accepted a bounty to bring a girl named “Sitha” to a broker who would send her home to her father.  The girl, however, became attached to Sonja and called her “Mother” and their adventures began.

Now, Sitha is “Sitha the Red,” and she is the star of her own comic book series, Red Sitha.  It is written by Andolfo and Luca Blengino; drawn by Valentina Pinti; colored by Chiara Di Francia; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  The series focuses on Sitha the Red, the adopted daughter of Red Sonja, now a decade older and a bounty hunter in the Kingdom of Aquilonia.  That is until someone from her past involves her in a suicide mission.

Red Sitha #1 opens in Tarantia, the capital of the Aquilonia.  Sitha the Red is searching for Misty, a missing girl thought to have run off for an elopement.  Instead, Sitha's search has caused her to interrupt “the Ritual of the Opening Doors.”  Will Sitha be able to return the girl to Massentia, or will her life end in this temple...?

Later, Sitha receives a shocking message and returns to Massentia – after having a great sea adventure on the way back.  When Sitha finally meets the messenger, his identity is even more shocking than the message he sent.

THE LOWDOWN:   In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Red Sitha #1.

As much as I like Mirka Andolfo and Luca Blengino's work on Red Sonja Volume 6, I like Red Sitha #1 even more.  I hope this delightful first issue is not a fluke.  It is closer to The Princess Bride than it is to any issue of Red Sonja.  Artist Valentina Pinti captures the script's humor and blends it seamlessly into the world of sword and sorcery.  Chiara Di Francia's bright colors strike the right mood for each scenes, from a darkened temple to a surreal sea adventure.

Let's hope upcoming issues of Red Sitha are as good as this first issue, which I highly recommend to you, dear readers.  I would be surprised if you didn't enjoy following the adventures of the witty and self-effacing Sitha the Red.

Project Superpowers was a comic book limited series published by Dynamite Entertainment beginning in January 2008.  The series resurrected many superheroes from the “Golden Age of Comics” that were originally published by now-defunct companies like Crestwood Publications, Fox Comics, and Nedor Comics.  Many of these characters were in the public domain.

The series was set on an Earth where a twentieth century conflict gave rise to the age of “the Superpowers.”  These Superpowers protected the world, especially the United States.

The characters return in the new comic book series, Project Superpowers: Fractured States Volume 1.  It is written by Ron Marz and Andy Lanning; drawn by Emilio Utrera; colored by Arthur Hesli; and lettered by Tom Napolitano.  The series is set in 2052 and finds the United States of America, post-disaster, fractured into warring regions.  Into this world, a mysterious man awakens, unkempt, naked, and abandoned in an underground base.  This “John Doe” finds the world turned upside down, but does he bring salvation … or doom?

As Project Superpowers: Fractured States Volume 1 #2 opens, John Doe is beset by dreams and visions of patriotic heroes hunted down by F-Troops.  But he has been captured by The Clown, who has plans for Joe Doe's virile and powerful body.  Can the Black Terror troops rescue him?  And just who is this new Black Terror?

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Project Superpowers: Fractured States Volume 1 #2, which is the second Project Superpowers comic book that I have read.

The manner in which writers Ron Marz and Andy Lanning present the story of Project Superpowers: Fractured States will not deter new readers.  I have not read read one single page of earlier Project Superpowers comic books, and I am having a blast reading this.  It is quite easy to follow and exciting to read.  Thus far, this series is part mystery, part dystopian sci-fi, and part superhero action-thriller, and it's killer cliffhangers are guaranteed to keep readers interested in what happens next.

I am in love with series artist Emilio Utrera's art and graphical storytelling.  Utrera captures the spirit of classic, old school superhero comic books.  He alone is worth the cover price of this title.  Arthur Hesli's moody colors complete the process in bringing this story to life.

I was shocked by the first issue, and this second issues has surprises for me, also.  I did not know what to expect of Project Superpowers: Fractured States Volume 1, and now, I can't wait for the next issue.  I highly recommend it.
