Nyx created by Tom Sniegoski and Ed McGuinness

“... And Be a Mom of Chaos!”

Nyx is a Vampirella comic book character.  She is the daughter of Chaos the Mad God and a human woman, making Nyx half-demon and half-human, but she needs to feed on human life force in order to live.  Nyx was created by writer Tom Sniegoski and artist Ed McGuinness and first appeared in Harris Comics' Vengeance of Vampirella #23 (cover dated: February 1996).  She is a longtime enemy and sometimes friend of Vampirella.

The character now has her own solo comic book series, entitled Nyx.  It is written by Christos Gage; drawn by Marc Borstel; colored by Jordi Escuin Llorach; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  The series finds Nyx dealing with her emerging human side, although her demon side is still powerful and hungry for human life force.

As Nyx #7 (“... And Be a Mom of Chaos!”) opens, Nyx is stuck with the deal she made with her father, the Mad God Chaos.  She only has to train her younger half-siblings on how to reconcile their dual natures – their human and demon sides.  But they're toddlers!  Now, Nyx is forced to outsmart her father and speed up the process of dealing with three half-bothers:  Sammael, Behemoth, and Cosmic, and two half-sisters, Tunrida and Flux.

But how does a half-demon with the power of a volcano face the ultimate challenge – parenthood?!

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Nyx #7, the seventh issue of the series that I have read.

I am having a difficult time categorizing Nyx.  It is a dark fantasy comic book, but it is also a comedy of domestic, family, and workplace dimensions.  If “good comics” were a comic book genre, then, that is where Nyx would belong.  Christos Gage continues to make Nyx clever and funny, pitting his lovable lead against a menagerie of interesting weirdos in supporting and guest character roles.

Marc Borstel's lovely art and straight-forward storytelling with Jordi Escuin Llorach's dark-ish colors make this an oddball delight to behold.  Borstel does some of his best work in Nyx #7, transforming Nyx into a true pin-up queen.  It was hard for me to ignore this issue's runway fashions.  So excellent writing and beautiful illustrations equal a comic book series that is hugely enjoyable.  And that's Nyx.  So read it, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comic books will want to try Nyx.

“Nine”

Red Sonja is female high fantasy and sword and sorcery hero.  She first appeared in Conan the Barbarian #23 (cover dated February 1973) and was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith.  Red Sonja was loosely based on “Red Sonya of Rogatino,” a female character that appeared in the 1934 short story, “The Shadow of the Vulture,” written by Conan the Cimmerian's creator, Robert E. Howard.

In 2005, Dynamite Entertainment began publishing comic books featuring differing versions of the character.  One of those is The Invincible Red Sonja.  It is written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti; drawn by Moritat; colored by Matt Carter and Sal Monoco; and lettered by Dave Sharpe.  In this series, Red Sonja is joined by the wing Tuma; the dispossessed Prince Ederik and Princess Zaria; and the Darklanders, Rok and Kai.

The Invincible Red Sonja #9 opens in the city of Capellia.  Awaiting Sonja there is the living god, Tezzah, who has ruled for over a thousand years.  Now, she is in this god's arena to fight her monstrous son.  But if she defeats mother and son, Sonja will have a kingdom on her hands.  What will this mean for Tuma, Ederik, Zaria, Rok and Kai?

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is The Invincible Red Sonja #9, which is the sixth issue of the series that I have read.

Under a beautiful cover by artist Amanda Conner and colorist Paul Mounts, The Invincible Red Sonja moves towards its likely end.  Conner and her co-writer Jimmy Palmiotti presents a big prize in front of Red Sonja.  It is a tempting one, and a prize many would collect.  This series always finds a way to grip the readers even as the locales and plots change.  I look forward to whatever comes next.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Red Sonja comic books will want to read The Invincible Red Sonja.

“Tacos, Temples and... Terror!”

Bettie Page (1923–2008) was an American model who gained notoriety in the 1950s for her pin-up photos.  She is still referred to has the “Queen of Pinups,” and her shoulder-to-armpit-length jet-black hair with its trademark bangs and her blue eyes have inspired generations of artists, illustrators and comic book artists.

In 2017, Dynamite Entertainment made Bettie Page the star of her own comic book miniseries.  The latest is Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6.  It is written by Ani-Mia; drawn by Celor; colored by Farah Nurmaliza; and lettered by Carlos M. Mangual.  The series finds Bettie searching for answers concerning an alien conspiracy.

Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6 #4 (“Tacos, Temples and... Terror!”) opens on a beach near Veracruz, Mexico.  There, Bettie and her team, Young-ja and Sofia, are relaxing before the next stage of their quest.

Bettie and her team are getting closer to the final location of the alien weapon stockpile, and now, they must slash their way through the jungles of Mexico in order to find “the Temple of the Sun.”  But they are starting to have questions.  What are they really search for?  Are aliens really hiding weapons?  Or could it be something much worse?  It is time to confront beauty and terror in the land of a lost tribe of “Ancient Aztecs” holding many secrets.  Plus, what meal has Young-ja's brought for the gang?

THE LOWDOWN:   In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  The latest is Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6 #4, which is the seventh issue of a Dynamite Bettie Page comic book that I have read.

Writer Ani-Mia (the pen name of Mia McLaughlin) continues to offer an easy pace for Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda.  In a series that is the comic book equivalent of easy listening music, issue #4 may be the most easy-going issue yet.  Still, I have come to really enjoy this series.

Celor's calm and smooth storytelling carries readers along on this delightful adventure and even includes a sweet spin of a character breaking the fourth wall.  Celor sells Bettie Page as a best smooth and sexy spin on Indiana Jones, and it works.

I have been remiss in mentioning how much I like Joseph Michael Linsner's theme covers for this series.  This is another element that makes Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda different.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Bettie Page comic books will want to try Bettie Page and the Alien Agenda Volume 6.
