Comics Review: "THE MAGIC ORDER 4 #3" Wants to Jack U Off (Prince song)

THE MAGIC ORDER 4 #3 (OF 6)
IMAGE COMICS/Netflix

STORY: Mark Millar
ART: Dike Ruan
COLORS: Giovanna Niro
LETTERS: Clem Robins
EDITORIAL: Sarah Unwin
COVER: Dike Ruan with Giovanna Niro
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Dani Strips with Brad Simpson
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (March 2023)

Rated M / Mature

The Magic Order created by Mark Millar at Netflix

The Magic Order 4 is a six-issue miniseries from writer Mark Millar and artist Dike Ruan.  The is the fourth installment of The Magic Order series, which began with the 2018-19 miniseries written by Millar and drawn by Olivier Coipel.  The Magic Order is a band of sorcerers, magicians, and wizards – with a focus on the Moonstone family – that live ordinary lives by day, but protect humanity from darkness and monsters of impossible sizes by night.  Colorist Giovanna Niro and letterer Clem Robins complete the series creative team.

The Magic Order 4 focuses on a coup within the order, one that has left the Moonstones defeated … seemingly … by the dark one who always wanted to rule the order – the supposedly defeated Madame Albany.  Now, to save everything, Cordelia Moonstone, the now deposed leader, will have to go way down in the dirty dirty to restore order.

The Magic Order 4 #3 opens with Cordelia and Francis King prisoners in this world/dimension known as “Kolthur.”  Fellow prisoner, Ubris Obrughast, informs them that the state of affairs within The Magic Order on Earth is well known in Kolthur.  He also tells them about Edgar Seemus a.k.a. “Uncle Edgar,” and how he (partially) caused the state of affairs in Kolthur.  But what he tells them next may well induce a stroke in our heroes.

Meanwhile, Uncle Edgar, the Wizard King, has a visit with Albany...

THE LOWDOWN:  My favorite Mark Millar Netflix creation is The Magic Order.  It always surprises me, and before I read each issue I wonder not if, but how I will be surprised.  Every time I think I might creep away and choose a new Millarworld favorite to love, The Magic Order drags me back.

I don't even have the words to describe how much The Magic Order 4 #3 shocks me.  I remember being creeped out and scared of the entire “Manson family compound” sequence in Quentin Tarantino's enthralling film, Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, but The Magic Order 4 #3 said, “Hold my moonshine.”  Then, it preceded to show me some uncomfortable family drama that made me concerned I was reading contraband material.  But it all utterly delighted and entertained me.

I'd say that Millar and Dike Ruan are killing it, but I think that I have said that a few times already.  Truthfully, everyone on this creative team is slaying.  Niro's colors are great.  Robin's lettering is great.  If Marvel and DC Comics' titles were as good as The Magic Order 4 #3, they wouldn't need crossover events to bump up their sales.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Mark Millar and of The Magic Order will want to read The Magic Order 4.

Comics Review: "VAMPIRELLA Mindwarp #5" is a Superb Finale

VAMPIRELLA MINDWARP VOLUME 1 #5
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Jeff Parker
ART: Benjamin Dewey
COLORS: Dearbhla Kelly
LETTERS: Jeff Eckleberry
EDITOR: Nate Cosby
COVER: Joseph Michael Linsner
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (January 2023)

Rated Teen+

“Ouch”

Vampirella is a vampire and female superhero created by the late author and science fiction and horror expert, Forrest J Ackerman, and designed by comic book artist, Trina Robbins.  Vampirella first appeared in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969), the debut issue of a black and white horror comics magazine from Warren Publishing.  Writer-editor Archie Goodwin changed the character from a hostess of horror comics to a leading character in her own stories.

In 2010, Dynamite Entertainment obtained the character and has been publishing new Vampirella material since then.  The latest is Vampirella Mindwarp Volume 1.  This new series is written by Jeff Parker; drawn by Benjamin Dewey; colored by Dearbhla Kelly; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  The series follows a mad chase across time and space, as an aged sorceress tries to steal and inhabit Vampirella's body.

Vampirella Mindwarp Volume 1 #5 (“Ouch”) opens in 1969... because Baroness Liesel Gruzal attempted to possess Vampirella's body.  The result was that Vampirella and the Baroness have been projected back into their bodies in the year 1969.  With her companions:  Ren, now in the body of Pendragon the Great (a popular magician of the 1930s and Vampirella's friend); Adam Van Helsing of those Van Helsings; and Ravashi, the young woman who is a mystic, Vampirella is planning to thwart the Baroness and force her back to the present.

Now, the Baroness is enjoying her past life to the fullest, living it as she didn't the first time around.  But eventually there will be some kind of paradox that will wipe away everything.  Vampirella must convince … or force the Baroness to return to the present.  The problem is that Vampirella is also really enjoying this chance to relive 1969 … and maybe she doesn't want to return, either.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Vampirella Mindwarp Volume 1 #5, which is one of many Dynamite Vampirella comic books I have read.

Vampirella Mindwarp #1 surprised me, so I have been diligently following the series since.  That turns out to be a good idea, as this is the most delightful and playful Vampirella series to date.  Writer Jeff Parker made sure that the issues that followed the first issue lived up to that great opening chapter.  He offered a series of imaginative twists and turns that were not only unexpected, but were also endlessly pleasing to read.  Well, in this fifth issue, that leads to a doozy of a resolution of the conflict between Vampirella and the Baroness.

The team of artist Benjamin Dewey and colorist Dearbhla Kelly deliver an eye-popping pop-art confection over this entire series.  Their work here reminds me of the art of husband-wife art team of Michael and Laura Allred, in terms of graphical style and storytelling substance.  Dewey's strong storytelling and singular visual style are an excellent change of pace to the sameness of superhero comic books.

Vampirella: Mindwarp is humorous, delightful, and mystical … and mind-warping – so to speak.  It should make for an excellent trade paperback collection.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comics will want to read Vampirella Mindwarp Volume 1.

Review: SHAZAM! Fury of the Gods" is Fun for the Entire Shazamily

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 14 of 2023 (No. 1903) by Leroy Douresseaux

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023)
Running time:  130 minutes (2 hours, 10 minutes)
MPA – PG-13 for sequences of action and violence, and language
DIRECTOR:  David F. Sandberg
WRITERS:  Henry Gayden and Chris Morgan (based on the DC Comics characters)
PRODUCER:  Peter Safran
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Gyula Pados
EDITOR:  Michel Aller
COMPOSER:  Christophe Beck

SUPERHERO/FANTASY/ACTION/COMEDY

Starring:  Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Jack Dylan Glazer, Adam Brody, Ross Butler, D.J Cotrona, Grace Caroline Currey, Meagan Good, Rachel Zegler, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Marta Milans, Cooper Andrews, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, and Djimon Hounsou with Gal Gadot

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a 2023 superhero and fantasy film from director David F. Sandberg.  The film is based on the DC Comics character now called “Shazam.”  Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a direct sequel to the 2019 film, Shazam! and is also the 12th installment in “DC Extended Universe” (DCEU).  Fury of the Gods continues the story of the teenage foster kid who becomes a superhero by uttering one magic word, “SHAZAM!”

Shazam! Fury of the Gods opens in Philadelphia two years after the events depicted in the first film.  Billy Batson (Asher Angel) can still transform into an adult hero, the champion who bears the name “Shazam” (Zachary Levi).  Billy will turn 18-year-old in a few months, which he believes means that he will loose his foster parents, Rosa (Marta Milans) and Victor Vásquez (Cooper Andrews).

Billy shared the power he got from “The Wizard” (Djimon Hounsou) with his five foster siblings.  He calls them the “Shazamily.”  His foster brother, Freddie Freeman (Jack Dylan Glazer), is an adult superhero who calls himself “Captain Everything” (Adam Brody).  His older foster sister, Mary Bromfield (Grace Caroline Currey) is trying to be an adult while also being a superhero.  The other foster kid/adult hero pairs are Eugene Choi (Ian Chen and Ross Butler), Pedro Peña (Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona), Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman and Meagan Good).  Billy/Shazam is desperate to keep his “Shazamily” together, but they are having a rough time being superheroes.  After doing a less than stellar job saving civilians from a collapsing bridge, Shazam and company discover that the local media refers to them as the “Philly Fiascoes.”

Bigger troubles are ahead, however.  “The Daughters of Atlas” have imprisoned The Wizard, and they want to regain the powers he stole from the gods, including their father, the Titan Atlas, and gave to his new champions – Billy and his Shazamily.  Can they survive the attack of the daughters:  Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu), and the reluctant Anthea (Rachel Zegler), and save the world from destruction and from the fury of the gods?

In the first Shazam! film, the drama was driven by Billy Batson's internal conflict.  It was built around the tension between the foster family Bill could have and did not want and the biological family he wanted but could no longer have (if he ever really had it to begin with).  In Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Billy/Shazam fears losing the foster family that he eventually embraced, and with such a theme, he must inevitably learn that one should not hold onto things too tightly – even loved ones.  The Daughters of Atlas must learn the same, concerning the things to which they cling too tightly.  Billy/Shazam's dilemmas don't resonate this time around the way they did in the original film, and, at times, Billy and Shazam's obsession with holding onto the family seems forced.  But at least this film has the requisite drama.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, like Shazam!, is a very entertaining film that is part energetic superhero movie, part charming comedy, and part heartwarming family film.  The superhero action is not as intense as that found in most superhero films, although Fury of the Gods' action is more intense than in the original.  Some of the villains' murderous intentions seem really murderous.

Except for the increase in intensity, everything about Fury of the Gods is a little down from the first film.  It is not as poignant, not quite as funny, and it seems too long, although it is a littler shorter than the original film.  Still, fans of Shazam! will likely enjoy Shazam! Fury of the Gods.  It even has a nice cameo appearance by another DC Comics superhero, and that cameo makes me wish that we could get more Shazam! Films.  It would be fun to see Billy Batson and Shazam team up with other DC  heroes and pitted against DC villains.  It is likely, however, that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the final half of a truly unique pair of superhero movies.

NOTES:
Shazam! Fury of the Gods has one extra scene in the middle of the credits and one at the end of the credits.

The DC Comics character, Shazam, was the first comic book character to have the name “Captain Marvel.”  A boy named Billy Batson became Captain Marvel by uttering the word, “Shazam!”  Captain Marvel was created by comic book artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker.  He first appeared in Whiz Comics #2 (cover-dated:  February 1940) which was published by Fawcett Comics.  A legal dispute caused Fawcett to stop publishing Captain Marvel comic books in 1953.  DC Comics revived the character in 1972, but by then, Marvel Comics owned the trademark to the name “Captain Marvel.”  Thus, the original Captain Marvel is now called Shazam.
