The Ambassadors created by Mark Millar at Netflix

[This following review is mostly a re-posting of my original review of THE AMBASSADORS #2. Following the review, however, I offer a few thoughts on the bonus material included in the “Special Edition” second printing of the comic book, which arrives in comic book shops the week of May 17, 2023.]

The Ambassadors is a new comic book miniseries written and created by Mark Millar. The series focuses on the six people out of eight billion humans who will received super-powers. Each will be a member of the international rescue squad, The Ambassadors. Each issue of The Ambassadors will be drawn by a different superstar comic book artist. The second issue is drawn by Karl Kerschl; colored by Michele Assaraskorn and lettered by Clem Robins.

The Ambassadors #2 opens in Delhi, India. Meet Binnu Bhatia. He's in love with Gita Ganesh, as he keeps telling his best bud, Jai. However, Binnu doesn't believe he has much of a chance with Gita; after all, Binnu is just a dude who works at a cell phone store.

Then tragedy strikes, and some time later, Binnu is “Codename India,” the Ambassador for India. Suddenly, he has access to powers that billions of other people want really bad. So, of course, it's a bit complicated with family, friends, and also Doctor Choon-He Chung, the amazing woman who is handing out super-powers. Plus, some will pay anything for those powers...

THE LOWDOWN: Thanks to a review copy provided by the Mark Millar division of Netflix, I got to read the first two issues The Ambassadors. This is a treat for which I have been awaiting since the announcement of the series last year.

I think the best thing that writer Mark Millar does with The Ambassadors #2 is depict that even in a scenario of absolute power and seemingly supernatural power, control is an illusion. What happens to Binnu Bhatia is both a dream and nightmare, to one extent or another. He can't stop what's coming; he must simply survive it or try to. This is how Mark is creating dramatic tension and conflict here, and this is what he is going to use to blow this up in our faces.

The artist for The Ambassadors #2 is Karl Kerschl, and his quirky style deftly conveys both the ambivalence and the menacing undertones in this chapter. I could have read another 28 pages of Kerschl's lovely storytelling.

So, yes, The Ambassadors is fantastic. It may well be one of the most consequential superhero team comic books well over a decade.

[This second printing includes the eight-page section entitled “The Making of 'The Ambassadors Issue 2'.” This section reprints Karl Kerschl's cover art and seven pages of his interior art without the coloring and lettering. So let's be honest. None of us are getting any Kerschl original art, so this is the best chance to see his beautiful artwork for this issue, unadorned by the series' excellent coloring and lettering. It's gorgeous. Kerschl can draw the f**k outta a comic book. Yes, this “Special Edition” is worth the cover price – even if you already have the first printing.]

“Darkwing Duck” was an animated superhero comedy television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation. It originally aired for three seasons (for a total of 91 episodes) from 1991 to 1992, both as part of the syndicated programming block, “The Disney Afternoon,” and as part of ABC's Saturday morning lineup. “Darkwing Duck” focused on a suburban duck, Drake Mallard, and his superhero alter-ego, “Darkwing Duck.” The character was a parody of the pulp fiction vigilante character, The Shadow, and his alter-ego, Kent Allard.

Over a 15-year period, beginning with Disney Comics in 1991, “Darkwing Duck” was adapted into comics and comic books. The current license holder is Dynamite Entertainment, and they have launched Darkwing Duck Volume 1. The series is written by Amanda Deibert; drawn and colored by Carlo Lauro; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

Darkwing Duck Volume 1 #4 opens in St Canard, the city hyper-vigilantly defended by the terror that flaps in the night, the ferocious fowl who plucks the evil eye from the face of foul play... Darkwing Duck! Today, however, Darkwing Duck is retired, and Drake Mallard is enjoying domestic bliss. He's enjoying it in spite of the awful cooking of his girlfriend, the sorceress Morgana Macawber.

Drake's daughter, Gosalyn, is the one who shatters the bliss when she informs her father that the villain with an evil green thumb, Bushroot, has taken over the community garden. Still, Drake refuses to be Darkwing Duck again, but he will fight Bushroot … as a civilian?! When Bushroot turns the garden into an evil vegetable maze, will Darkwing stay retired?

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Darkwing Duck Volume 1 #4, the fourth Darkwing Duck comic book that I have read.

I have never watched an episode of the “Darkwing Duck” animated series, although I have always wanted to do so, nor have I previously read a Darkwing Duck comic book … although I have wanted to do so. Writer Amanda Deibert has made my first experience reading a Darkwing Duck comic book series an excellent reading experience. These fun, tongue-in-cheek adventures sparkle with surprises.

Artist-colorist Carlo Lauro brings Deibert's scripts to life with energetic graphical storytelling and vivid colors. It's looks like eye candy for the Disney comic book fans, but is it too good to be true? Should an adult love this comic book as much as I do?

As I said in my review of the first three issues: I hope that Dynamite can find success with this title and with its other recent Disney release, including Gargoyles. They are quality entertainment, and Darkwing Duck Volume 1 is flat-out great.

“Here in Manhattan” – Chapter Four: “Tale Old as Time”

“Gargoyles” was an animated television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation that ran for a total of 78 episodes over three seasons, from October 24, 1994, to February 15, 1997. The series focused on “gargoyles,” a species of nocturnal creatures that had spent a thousand years in an enchanted petrified state. Reawakened in modern New York City, they are stone by day, but when day falls, they are warriors, the city's night-time protectors.

“Gargoyles” has been adapted into comic books by both Marvel Comics (1995) and Slave Labor Graphics (2006-09). Dynamite Entertainment is the new license holder and begins its publication with Gargoyles Volume 1 #1. The series is written by “Gargoyles” creator Greg Weisman; drawn and colored by George Kambadais; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry. The series will act as a “Season 4” of the original television series, following Weisman's preferred story line.

Gargoyles Volume 1 #4 (“Tale Old as Time”) opens as crime boss, Dino Dracon, is released from prison, and he immediately reestablishes that he is the boss. Determined to take over the New York underworld, Dino won't let anyone – human or Gargoyle – stand in his way.

Elsewhere, there is sense of change in the clan, and Goliath kind of wishes that there was a crisis to bring everyone closer. So when he and Hudson go out on their nightly patrol, they're in for a couple of extremely nasty surprises.

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Gargoyles #4, only the fourth Gargoyles comic book that I have read.

With each issue, I find Dynamite's Gargoyles comic book a little less difficult to follow, although I am still figuring out this universe. Although I was aware of the “Gargoyles” animated series, I never got around to watching it, but I am intrigued by this comic book. I find myself drawn more into the narrative, and I like that series writer Greg Weisman is pushing the story forward and bringing in more explosive drama and action.

George Kambadais' dynamic illustrations keep Weisman's story hopping, and that really shows in this fourth issue's last act. His storytelling deftly balances the many subplots and twists and turns of Weisman's narrative, creating a sense of anticipation. Now, there is more to anticipate.

I think that this story arc, “Here in Manhattan,” will read better as a trade paperback, but fans of the franchise will want to start reading the new Gargoyles, now.

MOVIES - From THR: Oscar-nominee, Willem Dafoe, is joining "Beetlejuice 2," which is due Sept. 2024.

Jean Carroll, in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. She was awarded $5 million total in damages.

From Variety: The Spanish-born American graphic artist, Frank Kozik, has died at the age of 61, Saturday, May 6, 2023. He designed the album cover art for Queens of the Stone Age's 1998 debut album, "Queens of the Stone Age" and for The Offspring's 1998 LP, "Americana." WRITERS STRIKE:

From Deadline: President Joe Biden speaks on the Writers Guild of America strike.

From Deadline: Retaliation! The studios have starting informing writer-producers who have "overall" and "first-look" deals that such deals are being suspended.

From Deadline: Retaliation! Prolific HBO creator, David Simon, who is best known for "The Wire," is one of the many writers who have had their overall deals suspended the studios due to the WGA strike. Simon has been with HBO for 25 years.

From Deadline: The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is on strike.
