The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a 1975 comedy-horror and musical fantasy film directed by Jim Sharman.  The film is written by Sharman and Richard O'Brien and is based based on the 1973 musical stage production, The Rocky Horror Show, for which O'Brien wrote the music, lyrics, and book.  Both the film and stage musical pay tribute to the science fiction and B-movie horror films that appeared in theaters from the 1930s to the 1960s.  The Rocky Horror Picture Show follows a newly-engaged couple who, because of car trouble, seeks shelter at a castle-like country home that is populated by bizarre guests and an even more bizarre host.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show introduces a naive young couple, Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon).  It is late November, and the couple are attending the wedding of their friends, Ralph Haphschatt (Jeremy Newson) and Betty Monroe (Hilary Labow), at Denton Episcopalian Church.  Brad and Janet get engaged after the wedding and decide to celebrate with their high school science teacher, Dr. Everett Scott (Jonathan Adams).

In Brad's car, the duo are en route to Scott's house on a dark and rainy night when they get lost and then get a flat tire.  Needing a telephone to call for help, the couple walk to a nearby castle.  There, they find the place in the throes of a rowdy party.  The guests are both flamboyantly dressed and bizarre.  What is even more bizarre however, is the host, the transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), who is about to unveil his latest creation.  There are two things of which Brad and Janet are unaware.  The first is Frank-N-Furter is from the planet “Transsexual,” located in the galaxy “Transylvania.”  The second is that at some point in the future, their story will be narrated by a noted criminologist (Charles Gray).

When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was initially released in the United States in the early fall of 1975, it was not well-received by either critics or audiences.  However, by the spring of 1976, the film's infamous cult following began, thanks to midnight showings, first in and around New York City, and then, spreading throughout the U.S.  Soon, fans in costume were performing alongside the film.

Dear readers, I must admit that I have never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a theater.  I first saw it in the late 1980s via a Japanese import or bootleg copy at the science fiction, fantasy, and gaming convention, CoastCon (I believe), in Biloxi, Mississippi.  It was a wild screening, and I freaked out when audience members jumped out of their seats and started performing bits from the film.

As some of you may know, Netflix is shutting down its DVD-by-mail service – currently known as DVDNetflix or DVD.com.  I decided to spend some of these final months on this beloved service re-watching favorite films and well as trying some older films that I have never seen.  Watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show seemed like the right thing to do as a sendoff to the service that I used to build my movie review blog, Negromancer.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is indeed a tribute to science fiction, B-movie, and monster films.  There are references to such films as Universal Pictures' Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), RKO's King Kong (1933), Hammer Films' The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), Fox's The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), and MGM's Forbidden Planet (1956), to name a few.

However, Rocky Horror's punk rock fashions, colorfully dyed hair, corsets, torn fishnet stockings, glitter, androgyny, and sex and violence are more important than its haunted mansion, secret labs, rival scientists, and sci-fi angles.  For me, this film is about having a good time and being liberated.  Sometimes, the film may seem like it is being outrageous for the sake of being outrageous, but one of its final songs personifies the film for me, “Fanfare/Don't Dream It, Be It.”  It's okay to look like you want to and to be what you want to.  And yes, it's okay to be turned on by both Susan Sarandon in her unmentionables and Barry Bostwick in his Jockey classic Y-front briefs.

I can certainly point to Tim Curry's legendary performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, but everyone, from the filmmakers, cast, and crew to the artisans, craftsman, and technicians that brought the sets and costumes to life, made The Rocky Horror Picture Show memorable and, for many, unforgettable.  I can't forget the songs, so I need a soundtrack album.  Meat Loaf makes the most of his short time on screen.  The narrator turns out to be hoot.  Even the passing of DVDNetflix won't stop me from seeing this show again.  The music, the songs, the cast, and the setting seem as if they will never let me forget that part of me belongs, at least for a little while, at The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Comics Review: "DEAD BY DAYLIGHT #1" Starts the Fire

DEAD BY DAYLIGHT #1

COVER: Ivan Tao
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Chris Shehan; Game Over; Lenka Simeckova; Dillon Snook; Jae Lee

Suggested for mature readers

Dead by Daylight is a survival horror online game that debuted in 2016.  It is a one-versus-four game in which one player takes on the role of a “Killer,” and the other four play as “Survivors.”  The killing is apparently meant to appease a malevolent force known as “the Entity,” the ruler of the realm in which the game is set.

Titan Comics is launching a comic book adaptation, entitled Dead by Daylight, which is a prequel to the game.  It is written by Nadia Shammas; drawn by Dillon Snook; colored by Emilio Lecce; and lettered by AndWorld Design's LAME.

Dead by Daylight #1 opens in 1994 in the forgotten town of Ormond.  Foster kid Frank Morrison is the new kid in town, placed with another asshole foster parent who really doesn't want to care or do much for him.  The first day of school lands him a new friend, Julie, and that connects him to more new friends, such as Julie's sister, Susie, and their friend, Joey.

The four discover that they actually work as a quartet, and soon they're tearing up the town.  But what will come of the chaos they have unleashed on the sleepy, dead-end town of Ormond?

THE LOWDOWN:  Titan Comics has been providing me with PDF copies of their publications for review for several years now.  I don't often take advantage of that, but I am with this new number one issue, Dead by Daylight #1.

Writer Nadia Shammas has scripted a nice first issue that has lots of interesting bits.  Frank, Julie, Susie, and Joey really seem to fit as a group, and Shammas makes them surprisingly likable.  Artist Dillon Snook creates an atmosphere infused to the hilt with intrigue.  There is something dark, but attractive in old Ormond, and Snook's graphical storytelling makes me want to know more.

I didn't know what to expect of Dead by Daylight #1.  I'm not even sure that I'd heard of the video game prior to this comic book, but I can say, dear readers, that I will come back for the second issue.  I've been nicely set up by this debut issue's set-up.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of comic book adaptations of video games will want to try Dead by Daylight.

Comics Review: "THE MAGIC ORDER 4 #5" - The Bitch is Back and Another One is Coming

THE MAGIC ORDER 4 #5 (OF 6)
IMAGE COMICS/Netflix

STORY: Mark Millar
ART: Dike Ruan
COLORS: Giovanna Niro
LETTERS: Clem Robins
EDITORIAL: Sarah Unwin
COVER: Dike Ruan with Giovanna Niro
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Dan Panosian; Dike Ruan
36pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (May 2023)

Rated M / Mature

The Magic Order created by Mark Millar at Netflix

The Magic Order 4 is a six-issue miniseries from writer Mark Millar and artist Dike Ruan.  The is the fourth installment of The Magic Order series, which began with the 2018-19 miniseries written by Millar and drawn by Olivier Coipel.  The Magic Order is a band of sorcerers, magicians, and wizards – with a focus on the Moonstone family – that live ordinary lives by day, but protect humanity from darkness and monsters of impossible sizes by night.  Colorist Giovanna Niro and letterer Clem Robins complete the series creative team.

The Magic Order 4 focuses on a coup within the order, one that has left the Moonstones defeated … seemingly … by the dark one who always wanted to rule the order – the supposedly defeated Madame Albany.  Now, to save everything, Cordelia Moonstone, the now deposed leader, will have to go way down in the dirty dirty to restore order.

The Magic Order 4 #5 opens in the world/dimension known as “Kolthur,” the realm of the Wizard King.  Cordelia must face her brother, Perditus, her parents' eldest child, the one who was given to the Hordes of Kolthur when he was but a child.  Now, Perditus just wants to kill his li'l sis, Cordelia Moonstone.

It is looking like Cordelia won't be able to defeat her powerful sibling, but she must if she is going to return to Earth.  Madame Albany is already plotting to destroy reality.

THE LOWDOWN:  My favorite Mark Millar Netflix creation is The Magic Order.  It always surprises me, and before I read each issue I wonder not if, but how I will be surprised.  Every time I think I might creep away and choose a new Millarworld favorite to love, The Magic Order drags me back.

I mentioned in my review of the final issue of Millar's superhero miniseries, The Ambassadors, that he is really good at writing penultimate issues.  I referenced The Magic Order series as being great examples of what Millar can do with penultimate (second-to-last) and last issues.  The Magic Order 4 #5 perfectly encapsulates how well Millar sets up the penultimate issues of The Magic Order.  It's the end of the world and more, if our heroes can't save the day, and it feels like it.  I don't have any idea how the sixth issue will conclude this arc, but I'm sure it will be heart-stopping.

Artist Dike Ruan has turned in some of his best work here.  He creates the visual and graphical landscape of reality in the throes of madness as it approaches oblivion, and Giovanna Niro's colors lights it all on fire so that this issue resembles a view of a Hellscape.

So batten down the hatches, it's rough sailing to the end of this great big fuck-apocalypse of a miniseries.  If you want to really be here for the ending, dear readers, catch up on The Magic Order 4.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Mark Millar and of The Magic Order will want to read The Magic Order 4.
