LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music is excited to announce the release of Dune: Part Two (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) with music by multiple Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer.  Dune: Part Two is the sequel to the Oscar-winning 2021 film, Dune: Part One.

The first two singles: “A Time of Quiet Between the Storms” and “Harvester Attack” are available now.

The full soundtrack will be available February 23rd in standard, Dolby Atmos, CD and vinyl formats. Released in conjunction with Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Dune: Part Two,” the film, from Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (“Dune,” “Arrival,” “Blade Runner 2049”), explores the next chapter of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel Dune and features an expanded, all-star, international ensemble cast. The film is slated for a March 1, 2024 release in theaters and IMAX nationwide and internationally beginning on 28 February 2024.

Hans Zimmer's Dune: Part Two soundtrack is the follow up to his widely acclaimed score album and two accompanying releases from 2021's Dune, which earned Zimmer an Academy Award. Zimmer approached the score as a continuation from the first film and says, “I never left the world of ‘Dune.’ In fact, I think Denis thought I was quite mad, because I kept writing after we finished the first movie. But because I knew the story, I knew the book, I knew what was coming our way. And in fact, a lot of the main themes in this second movie were written at the end of the first film, before Denis started shooting. It felt important to carry on writing when we were still in the same spirit, the same frame of mind.”

Villeneuve tasked Zimmer with composing a key piece of music for the new film, creating a soundtrack for the romance between Paul (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya). Villeneuve says, “I wanted Hans to write something unforgettable for Chani. A love theme, the love of Paul for Chani. I wanted something heartbreaking, and the most beautiful love theme ever written, and honestly I think he did it with the track ‘A Time of Quiet Between the Storms.’ It’s one of the most beautiful scores he’s written. I remember when I first listened to it, I was in tears.”

Review: "MEG 2: THE TRENCH" is Truly Megilicious

SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW:

Meg 2: The Trench offers the same fun as the original film, The Meg (2018), but with all new monsters, villains, and action.

Jason Statham's Jonas Taylor does not dominate the new film as he did in the first, but Statham is still at his action-movie best.

I like Meg 2: The Trench enough that I want a third film... as soon as possible.

Meg 2: The Trench is a 2023 science fiction, horror, and action film directed by Ben Wheatley and starring Jason Statham.  The movie is a direct sequel to the 2018 film, The Meg.  Meg 2: The Trench finds a research team fending off giant sharks and also the murderous criminals behind a malevolent mining operation in some of the greatest depths of “the Trench.”

Meg 2: The Trench opens several years after the events of the first film.  Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham), the diver who specializes in deep sea search and rescue, has been involved in fighting environmental crimes on the ocean.  He is also helping the underwater research facility, Mana One, in exploring a further deep part of the Mariana Trench where the Megalodon of the original film was discovered.

Following the death of Suyin Zhang (which is not show onscreen), Jonas has been raising her teenage daughter, now 14-year-old Meiying (Sophia Cai), alongside her uncle and Suyin's brother, Jiuming Zhang (Jing Wu).  Jiuming has acquired his father's company, X-Pletandum Technologies, alongside wealthy financier, Hillary Driscoll (Sienna Guillory).  Jiuming has also been studying an 80 ft (24 m) female Meg called Haiqi, who was discovered as a pup and trained by Jiuming, but who has been acting erratically of late.

Jonas returns to Mana One where he and the survivors of the first Meg disaster, Mac (Cliff Curtis), Mana One operations manager, and DJ (Page Kennedy), a Mana One engineer, join Jiuming's latest project.  He wants to explore more of the Mariana Trench, unaware that here are more Megs and also now human danger with which to contend.  Can Jonas save the day, again?

The first film, The Meg, is loosely based on Steve Alten's 1997 novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.  Meg 2: The Trench is based on Alten's 1999 novel, The Trench, one of six sequels to the original novel, with a seventh due in 2024 or 2025.  I have enjoyed the two films so much that I am considering reading, at least, some of the novels.

I gave The Meg a grade of “C+,” but in the years since I first saw it, I have come to love it.  It is one of my favorite films, and now I would give it a “B+.”  Meg 2: The Trench starts off slowly, but the film really kicks into gear when the story returns to Mana One, the central setting of the first film.  The Trench is not a retread, as most of the action set pieces are new.  There are a few references to the first film, but the writers of the original film return to offer new jump-scares, new monsters, and an added number of awful humans.

Meg 2: The Trench gives Jason Statham's Jonas Taylor the chance to show off his martial art fighting skills, which he did not do in the first film.  In fact, one of the other returning characters gets to kick some butt, and the sequel actually gives several characters their own set pieces so that they can shine.

Meg 2 isn't great cinema, but it is a great time at the movies.  It is upgraded, campy monster movie fun that will have you swept up, dear readers, if you are willing to be swept up.  I had a blast watching it, and I heartily recommend it to fans of the first film.  Meg 2: The Trench makes me hope we get to see more Megs and more Trench in a third film.

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The latest "Game of Thrones" spinoff, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight" is currently in pre-production and will debut in late 2025.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Warner Bros. has signed Tom Cruise and Margot Kidder to be big production deals.  It has spent $200 million on its "Joker" sequel.  It's all to make Warner Bros. attractive to a buyer or merger partner beginning in April.

MOVIES/TRAILERS - From Deadline:  Lionsgate has released the first trailer for its star-studded film adaptation of the videogame, "Borderlands."  Directed by Eli Roth, the film stars Cate Blanchett who leads a cast including Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis, to name a few.  It is due in theaters August 9, 2024.

MUSIC - From Deadline:  Beyonce has become the first Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard's "Hot Country Songs" chart.  Her song, "Texas Hold 'Em," released February 11, 2024, debuted at the top of the "Hot Country Songs" list.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Gareth Edwards is in final negotiations to direct the fourth "Jurassic World" movie.  This comes after news that talks with the first choice, "John Wick" director David Leitch, fell through.  Edwards is best known for directing Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and recently directing "The Creator."  The new Jurassic World movie is due in theaters July 2, 2025.

MOVIES/BOOKS - From Deadline:  Stephen Kings calls out Warner Bros. on Twitter for holding back on the released date of "Salem's Lot," its film adaptation of King's 1975 classic horror novel. The film has been having release date changes since September 2022.

MOVIES/MUSIC - From Deadline:  Oscar-winning director, Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") will direct four separate films about "The Beatles."  Each film will focus on one of four members of "the Fab Four": John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Jonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the high-profile limited series, Amazon Prime Video‘s "Blade Runner 2099."  Van Tulleken also directed the first two episodes of FX's upcoming "Shogun."

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Ridley Scott will direct Paramount Pictures' biopic about the Grammy-winning, hit-making pop music group, the "Bee Gees" (brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb).

From Deadline:   Film, television, and stage actor, Paul D'Amato, has died at the age of 75, Monday, February 19, 2024.  D'Amato is best known for the role of "Tim 'Dr. Hook' McMcCraken" in the 1977 sports movie classic, "Slap Shot."  He also appeared in such films as "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Suspect" (1987).

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, Tony Ganios, has died at the age of 64, Sunday, February 18, 2024.  Ganios may be best known for two roles, his debut role as "Paul LaGuardia" in "The Wanderers" (1979) and as "Anthony 'Meat' Tuperello" in the hit 1981 sex comedy, Porky's, and its two sequels.  He also had a recurring role in the former CBS crime drama, "Wiseguy."

“Identity Crisis” Part 2: “Skin and Bones, Waifs and Strays”

Created by Sam Johnson, Geek-Girl is a comic book character that debuted in the 2016 Geek-Girl miniseries,  She returned in a second miniseries, 2018's Geek-Girl Vol. 2, which subsequently became an ongoing series.  Geek-Girl Vol. 2 is written by Sam Johnson; drawn by Carlos Granda; colored by Chunlin Zhao; and lettered by Paul McLaren.

Geek-Girl focuses on Ruby Kaye of Acorn Ridge, Maine, a sexy and popular college coed who inadvertently becomes a superhero.  Ruby dons a pair of super-tech eye glasses that give her super-powers.  Ruby's BFF, Summer James, then talks her into trying to be a superhero, even providing her with a moniker.  Now, Ruby is Maine's newest superhero, “Geek-Girl.”

Geek-Girl Vol. 2 #12 (“Skin and Bones, Waifs and Strays”) opens at “Snakeskin's Bar.”  Chromex and Dog Woman, friends of the captured costume, Pig Head, have approached Digger Mensch and Terry the Super-Porter.  One of them, Chromex, makes Digger a lucrative offer for the whereabouts of Pig Head – a big payday.  Meanwhile, Pig Head is getting to know Rosebud and Joe Cyborg.

Ruby returns to headquarters, struggling to understand what happened to her, but her conversation with The Minger is interrupted when the League of Larcenists invades the headquarters.  Should Ruby help with the response to this assault or go after the person who has stolen her identity and a lot more.

THE LOWDOWN:  Geek-Girl creator-writer Sam Johnson regularly sends me PDF review copies of the latest issues of Geek-Girl, and has been doing so for several years.  I enjoy reading about Geek-Girl and her (mis)adventures.  I like this comic book enough to believe that encouraging you to give this series a try, dear readers, is one way I can contribute something good to the comic book industry.

Geek-Girl #12 carries over threads from Geek-Girl #11 and the recent release, Fake Geek-Girl #1.  Writer Sam Johnson packs most issues with a lot of characters, which can sometime put a drag on the pace of the narrative, as it does here, but only a little.  Sam is an imaginative writer and his stories, in a deceptively quiet way, are riveting.  He captures the spirit of Silver and Bronze Age superhero team comic books like Marvel Avengers and DC Comics' Justice League.  The difference is that Sam captures the eccentricities of both the superheroes and their civilian identities, where as the earlier comic books focus on the weirdness of the superheroes.

Artist Carlos Granda is quite good at capturing facial expressions and the quirkiness and oddness in the way people act in relationship to emotions and speech.  Granda's graphical storytelling and compositions capture both the unique nature of Sam Johnson's world and the classic comic book sensibilities of Geek-Girl.  All of this really shows under Chunlin Zhao's excellent colors and Paul McLaren's lettering.

Geek-Girl #12 is like the series as a whole, endlessly charming and constantly beguiling.  I always want to read this series, and issue #12 makes me hungry for more.  I don't know if Johnson wants to make Geek-Girl a monthly comic book, but, dear readers, I wish for that.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of lovable superheroes will find an all-around winner in Geek-Girl.

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character.  In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics has also published superhero comic books.  Adventures of the Jaguar #1 (cover dated: September 1961) introduced “The Jaguar,” who was created by writer Robert Bernstein and artist John Rosenberger.  The Jaguar was Ralph Hardy, a zoologist who found a magic belt in an ancient temple that gave him flight, strength, animal control, and the enhanced abilities of many animals.

Many years later, New Crusaders #1 (cover dated: October 2012) introduced a new version of The Jaguar.  She is Ivette Velez, and now, she is the star of a new one-shot comic book, The Jaguar, No. 1.  It is written by Keryl Brown Ahmed; drawn by Tango; colored by Ellie Wright; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

The Jaguar #1 opens on a passenger bus traveling through Northern Peru.  Something is killing the Pampas cats of the region, and a group of zoologists has come together to investigate these mysterious slayings.  They know the culprit is a bird of prey, but the method of killing is unlike any of the birds local to the region.

Enter Ivette Velez a.k.a. “The Jaguar.”  It’s going to take someone with apex predator abilities to find out what is causing these murders…someone like Ivette!  Can the predator, however, become the prey?  Who or what is “The Buzzard?”  Who or what is “Ai Apaec?”  And what does this all have to do with Ivette's tragic past?  Can she solve these mysteries and validate the faith her mentor, the original Jaguar, Ralph Hardy, had in her?

THE LOWDOWN:   I have been reading comic books, on and off, for decades.  I have sporadically read Archie Comics titles over that time.  For many years now, Archie's marketing department has been sending PDF copies of some of their titles for review.  The Jaguar, No. 1 is the latest.

I was vaguely familiar with The Jaguar, mainly through DC Comics' early 1990s imprint, Impact Comics, which published updated versions of Archie Comics superhero characters.  I have taken interest in Archie's recent one-shot revivals of its superhero characters, beginning with the recent The Darkling, No. 1 (cover dated: January 2024).

However, dear readers, you don't have to be familiar with either version of The Jaguar at all to enjoy the new one-shot comic book, The Jaguar, No. 1.  Writer Keryl Brown Ahmed crafts a 21-page story that offers concise origins or back stories for the two major players in this comic book.  Ahmed gives the readers everything they need to understand the Jaguar, to enjoy the story, and to be ready for any potential future stories.

The art by Tango recalls the late Darwyn Cooke, and is visually energetic.  However, the storytelling is muddled; the page design in chaotic; and the composition is more style than substance.  As usual, Ellie Wright's colors are dazzling, and letterer Jack Morelli's work is classic comics cool.  Both are an added benefit to Tango's storytelling.

The Jaguar, No. 1 is a surprise, and I enjoyed it in spite of its graphical storytelling flaws.  Fans of Archie Comics superheroes will like it, especially because it offers the appearance of another old character, The Buzzard, which first appeared in the 1983 version of The Mighty Crusaders, specifically issue #11 (cover dated: March 1985).

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Archie Comics' superhero titles will want to try The Jaguar, No. 1.

Review: DreamWorks' "ORION AND THE DARK" Takes on Childhood Fears

SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW:

Orion and the Dark is a unique animated film that is about a child learning to accept fear as a part of life without letting it control him.

Orion and the Dark has an eclectic cast full of surprising characters, but Orion and Dark are this film's winning pair.

Orion and the Dark is a good family film, especially for parents and for children who are of middle grade age and younger.  I find it to be too deep in its feelies, but it will tug on the heartstrings of its intended audience.

Orion and the Dark is a 2024 animated fantasy-adventure and comedy-drama film directed by Sean Charmatz and produced by DreamWorks Animation.  The film is animated by French production company, Mikros Animation, and is also a “Netflix Original” that began streaming on Netflix February 2, 2024.

Orion and the Dark is based on the 2015 children's book, Orion and the Dark, from author Emma Yarlett.  Orion and the Dark the movie focuses on a boy whose active imagination causes him to be scared of everything and on the entity that takes him on an incredible journey.

Orion and the Dark introduces 11-year-old Orion Mendelson (Jacob Tremblay).  He is a severely anxious child with a long list of irrational fears.  He is a schoolboy with a fear of speaking in front of class, being bullied, ending up in a toilet, and a fear of speaking to Sally (Shino Nakamichi), the girl of his dreams, of course.  Outside of school, he also has a bunch of fears, including the fear of getting eaten by a shark, but at home its is worse.

Orion is afraid of the night, especially of the dark and of all the dark places in his bedroom.  Orion's father (Matt Dellapina) and mother (Carla Gugino) have a difficult time getting him to bed.  One night a giant, smiling creature slithers into his room.  He introduces himself as “Dark,” the embodiment of Orion's worst fear, the dark.  Tired of hearing Orion's constant complaints about him (the dark), Dark takes the 11-year-old on an adventure to help him overcome his fears and to appreciate the benefits of nighttime and of the dark.  But there are plenty of dangers along the way, including Dark's rival, “Light” (Ike Barinholtz), and Orion's own deep-seated fears.

Orion and the Dark is a beautifully animated film with simple, but evocative character and concept design.  It took me awhile to remember that Orion and the Dark reminds me of the 2014 DreamWorks Animation film, Mr. Peabody & Sherman.  Both films share a visual aesthetic, possibly because artist and designer, Timothy Lamb, served as the production designer on the two films.  Both films also convey their fantastical settings and surreal environments via eye-appealing art and design that have a children's picture book quality.  

I do have one gripe about Orion and the Dark.  The film does have a heart – a center – which is that both Orion and Dark have to learn something about themselves and to overcome self-doubt.  The film, however, also has sentiment, and it is, at times, exceedingly sentimental, which can be both heartwarming and saccharine.  Orion and the Dark is sometimes too much in its emotions and feelies, so much so that by the end, I thought the film was trying to give me an insulin attack.  Orion and the Dark pounds on its parent-child themes and dynamics with schmaltzy consistency.

I want to avoid spoilers.  Still, I will say that Orion and the Dark does have a time-travel subplot courtesy of screenwriter, Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind), who is known for creating elaborate, twisty, meta screenplays.  Orion and the Dark has several interesting supporting characters, especially Dark's fellow “Night Entities,” so many so that I could see it becoming an animated television series.  Orion and the Dark is unique and quite well made, and many may find its heartwarming insistence just what we need in these dark times.
