ACTION/COMEDY/THRILLER/CRIME

Starring:  Martin Lawrence, Will Smith, Tea Leoni, Joe Pantoliano, Tcheky Karyo, Theresa Randle, Marg Helgenberger, Nestor Serrano, Julio Oscar Mechoso, Saverio Guerra, Michael Imperioli, and Karen Alexander

As usual, a cog in the Hollywood system had written an action/comedy for Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey, two funny white men.  Perhaps, the white studio bosses never thought of persons of colors playing the parts and playing them not only well, but also better than the actors of the default skin color.  By happy accident, two tremendously talented comic actors, who also happened to be men of color inherited the parts, and, thus was born Bad Boys.  Lord knows, we can never again think of Lovitz and Carvey, two milky-white Americans, as proper for these roles, not that there’s anything wrong with one’s skin color being that white.

Bad Boys is a 1995 American buddy-cop film and action-comedy directed by Michael Bay.  Bad Boys focuses on two savvy, Black detectives who try to protect a witness to murder while also investigating the theft of heroin from their police precinct’s evidence room.

Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) are two hip detectives; at least they seem cooler than their Miami PD colleagues, but they can take the heat that comes with their job.  As the film begins, they’ve already made a major heroin bust, but a gang of well-equipped thieves breaks into the precinct’s evidence room and steals the dope.  Obviously, the raid is an inside job, so the precinct takes the blame.  Burnett and Lowrey’s Captain Howard (Joe Pantoliano) feels the heat and returns it to the boys, putting the onus on them to find the dope.  Making matters more complicated, they get saddled with protecting Julie Mott (Tea Leoni) a murder witness somehow connected to the smack thieves.

According to stories from the set of Bad Boys, director Michael Bay, Lawrence, and Smith hated the script, so they ad-libbed a lot of the dialogue.  This was Bay’s first feature film, but he’d made a name for himself directing music videos for Tina Turner and “Wilson Phillips” (among others) and commercials for Nike and Budweiser (among others).  Bay brings all the visual flair and clichés you could expect from music videos: quick-cut editing, dark alleyways full of steam, sexy chicks, and hot cars.  He mixed in car chases, tremendous explosions, cartoonish violence, and gunfights with hundreds of rounds of ammunition.  Smith and Lawrence brought the comedy and the hip sensibility to play the characters so over the top that you’d think they were heroes right out of a comic book.  It works to an extent.  Bad Boys is a very funny, exciting, and visually agile action movie.

If anything, it’ll be remembered for its African-American leads, unusual for an cop buddy movie/action flick.  Beyond that, Bay introduced his over the top visual style that he would bring all his heart-pounding, action vehicles:  slow motion camera buzzing around a posing action stud, panoramic shots of the sky, narrow escapes from devastating fire balls, etc.  Bad Boys is pleasant and fun, nothing important, but it stands out in the white bread world of Hollywood action romps.  Certainly, Lawrence and Smith are more believable as renegade cops than say, Josh Hartnett or Ben Affleck.

From NBCNews:  Outside the courthouse where Donald Trump is on trial, legendary Oscar-winning actor, Robert De Niro, clashed with Trump supporters.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the three-day Memorial Day weekend (5/24 to 5/26/2024) box office is Warner Bros.' "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" with an estimated take of 25.6 million dollars.

From Deadline:  American songwriter, Richard M. Sherman, has died at the age of 95, Saturday, May 25, 2024.  Richard and his the late brother, Robert B. From Variety:  Film and television writer, producer, director, and personality, Morgan Spurlock, has died at the age of 53, Thursday, May 23, 2024.  Spurlock was best known for the 2003 documentary film, Super Size Me, which earned him an Academy Award nomination.  His career was mostly derailed after he admitted to sexual misconduct in 2017.

From Deadline:  American television entrepreneur and visionary, Patrick Gottsch, has died at the age of 70, Saturday, May 18, 2024.  In the early 1980s, he started his own home satellite installation company and also began working for a livestock auction company in the early 1990s.  Gottsch put his experiences together and launched "Rural Free Delivery Television" (RFD-TV), a 34-hour rural television network, on the DISH Network in December 2000.  Gottsch had first tried to launch RFD-TV in the late 1980s and in the 1990s, but could not get funding.  In 2017, he also launched "The Cowboy Channel," which like RFD-TV, operates under Gottsch's company, Rural Media Group.

Comics Review: "ARCHIE COMICS: JUDGMENT DAY #1" Makes Hell Fun

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character.  In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics also has a dark side, as seen via a number of horror and dark fantasy titles sometimes published under the “Archie Horror” imprint.  Archie's latest horror offering is Archie Comics: Judgment Day.  It is the first in Archie Comics' new line, “Archie Premium Event.”  It is written by Aubrey Sitterson; drawn by Megan Hutchinson; colored by Matt Herms; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.  The series finds Archie on a mission to rid his hometown of Riverdale of all “wicked-kind.”

Archie Comics: Judgment Day #1 opens in a Riverdale beset by all manner of shape-shifting demons.  Archie is on a quest to cleanse his hometown, but first he needs the power to do so.  Enter Madam Satan.  She possesses the power to summon, imprison, and enslave demons for her own purposes.  She can give Archie the “infernal power” he needs to fight the demons, but first, he has to meet the right demon... so to speak.  And would Archie kill a friend to get that power?  Jughead Jones will be the first to learn the answer.

THE LOWDOWN:   For a long time, Archie's marketing department has been sending PDF copies of some of their titles for review.  Archie Comics: Judgment Day #1 is one of them.

Since her modern revival in Archie Horror's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #1 (cover dated: October 2014), vintage Archie character, Madam Satan, has been on quite a tear.  She brings quite a bit of dark magic and unexpected edge to this first issue of Archie Comics: Judgment Day.  Writer Aubrey Sitterson concocts a delicious dark brew that should quench the dark thirsts of his readers' imaginations, and Madam Satan is the straw that stirs this drink.  This first issue is fun and crazy, and whatever your expectations, dear readers, Sitterson beats them to a pulp.

Megan Hutchinson's art is a flow of magical weaving and page after page of tapestries that recalls the art of Heironymus Bosch.  Hutchinson's storytelling is dazzling and under the colors by Matt Herms, it is eye-popping and gorgeous.  The great Jack Morelli tops it off with his classic comics lettering.

If Archie plans on doing more horror and dark fantasy comic books like Archie Comics: Judgment Day, then, they must do them.  Perhaps, Archie Comics can become the new Vertigo Comics, which would be more real than whatever tragedy DC Comics is trying to resurrect.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Archie Comics' “Archie Horror” imprint will want Archie Comics: Judgment Day.
