ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

EMMYS - From Deadline:  The winners at the 2024 / 51st Daytime Emmy Awards have been announced.  ABC's long-running soap opera, "General Hospital," won four awards, including "Outstanding Daytime Drama."

NETFLIX - From Deadline:  Writer-director Tyler Perry has set the cast for "Straw," his latest film for Netflix, the streamer announced on Wednesday. Taraji P. Henson is set to star alongside Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Mike Merrill. and Ashley Versher.

From Deadline: Netflix has released the first images, title and voiceover cast for Aardman’s new Wallace & Gromit movie, "Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl." The release date is this winter 2025 on Netflix, but the movie will debut on the BBC this Christmas.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The CW has cancelled its drama, "All American: Homecoming" after three seasons.  That leaves the original series, "All American," as the sole remaining scripted series began on The CW before Nexstar bought the network.

MOVIES - From Collider:  Elle Fanning is in negotiations to star in "Badlands," the next film from the Predator-Prey franchise.  There apparently also a direct sequel to the 2022 film, "Prey."

STREAMING - From THR:  Oscar-nominee Paul Giamatti has signed onto starring in a TV series based on director Eli Roth's "Hostel" film series.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The hit British TV series, "Ghosts" (2019-23) begat the American hit, "Ghosts" (CBS, 2021-present).  Now, there is to be a German television adaptation.  The six-part series will join a French version that is also being developed.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Neve Campbell says that she has returned to the "Scream" franchise for "Scream 7" because the studio came back to her in a "respectful way."

STREAMING - From Variety:  The site offers the 20 best movies coming to streaming in June 2024.  Among them are Netflix's "Hitman" and "Origin" at Hulu.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 5/31 to 6/2/2024 weekend box office is Sony Pictures' "The Garfield Movie" with an estimated take of 14 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Billy Zane releases the first images of himself as legendary actor, Marlon Brando from the biopic, "Waltzing with Brando."  Directed by Bill Fishman, the film is set in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Actress Lily Tomlin says that she has mixed feelings about Jennifer Aniston's remake of the 1980s film, "9 to 5," the legendary comedy that starred Tomlin alongside Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton.

DISNEY/TRAILER - From Deadline:  Disney has provided a first look at "Moana 2," as well as a teaser trailer.  The film, which stars Dwayne Johnson and Auli'i Cravalho, is due Nov. 27th, 2024.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American film producer and screenwriter, Stephen J. Rivele, has died at the age of 75, Friday, May 17, 2024.  Rivele shared a "Best Original Screenplay" Oscar nomination with Oliver Stone and Stephen Wilkinson for Stone's 1995 biopic, "Nixon."  Rivele also co-wrote the biopic "Ali" (2001), and he was one of the writers and producers of "Birth of the Dragon" (2016).

From THR:  British-Canadian stage, screen, and television actor, Alan Scarfe, has died at the age of 77, Sunday, April 28, 2024.  He may be best known in the U.S. for playing bad guys in action films and for his appearances in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Voyager".  Scarfe appeared in such films as "Street Justice" (1987), "Iron Eagle II" (1988), "Double Impact" (1991), and "Lethal Weapon 3."

From Truthout:  On Thursday afternoon (May 30th, 2024), in "The People vs. Donald Trump" — the New York-based trial featuring, for the first time in United States history, an ex-president in a criminal proceeding— a jury of the former president’s peers delivered a unanimous verdict: that he was guilty of all crimes he was accused of committing. Trump becomes the first former President in US History to be convicted of a crime.

“Blockbuster Blowout”

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character.  In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics published the series, Archie & Friends, from 1992 to 2012 for 159 issues.  Since 2019, Archie has been publishing a new iteration of Archie & Friends as a series of themed one-shot comic books.  The latest is Archie & Friends (Blockbuster Movies) No.1, the eighteenth issue in the series.  It features one new five-page story and one reprint story.  Entitled “Blockbuster Blowout,” the new story introduces the character, “PoolNoodle the Backstroke,” a parody of Marvel Comics' “Deadpool” and, to a lesser extent, DC Comics' Deathstroke the Terminator.  The story is written by Ian Flynn; drawn by Steve Butler (pencils) and Lily Butler (inks); colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

Archie and the Gang in “Blockbuster Blowout”:

Archie’s summer movie fantasies are about to get out of control,  You may have heard of Deadpool, so get ready for PoolNoodle.  This new character's first appearance, however, may be his last as he takes on a big-budget, crossover, multimedia crossover film.

Luckily, Archie is back as the superhero, “Pureheart the Powerful.”  Can the duo save an afternoon at the theater?  This story guest-stars The Crusaders, Cosmo, Josie and the Pussycats, and many more.

THE LOWDOWN:   For several years, Archie's marketing department has been sending me PDF copies of some of their titles for review.  One of the most recent is Archie & Friends Blockbuster Movies, (which is titled Archie & Friends, No. 1 (#18), in the indicia).

The things about superhero movies that “Blockbuster Blowout” mocks are also the frequent targets of social media snark, and the latter is funnier.  As for PoolNoodle, I think he could really be funny in his own one-shot comic book.  I generally like the Archie Comics work of writer Ian Flynn, but “Blockbuster Blowout” does not have much spark.  However, it is good to see the pencil art of Steven Butler, and Butler should definitely be drawing more superhero comic books.

This one-shot comic book's sole reprint story is “There's No Place Like... Riverdale,” which was originally published in Betty and Veronica Comics Digest Magazine #188 (cover dated: December 2008).  The story references L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900), but its story beats correlate with the book's most famous film adaptation, MGM's 1939 musical fantasy film, The Wizard of Oz.  As adaptations of this story go, this story is rather entertaining and cute.  It has the readers following Betty and her cat, Caramel, on their adventures through Oz.

I grew up on classic-style Archie Comics.  So, there is something comforting about seeing Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead taking in a movie together, as they do in “Blockbuster Blowout.”  I will always recommend classic-style Archie titles, so I am giving Archie & Friends Blockbuster Movies a hearty recommendation.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic-style Archie Comics will want to find a copy of Archie & Friends Blockbuster Movies.

Chapter Three: “The Ms. in the Strange High House”

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character,” known as “Elvira.”  Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name.  As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s.

Elvira also appeared in comic books, beginning in 1986 with the short-lived series from DC Comics, Elvira's House of Mystery.  In 2018, Elvira returned to comic books via Dynamite Entertainment.  Elvira's latest comic book series is Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1.  The series is written by David Avallone; drawn by Kewber Baal; colored by Walter Pereyra; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  In this new series, Elvira joins the ghost of infamous horror and fantasy author, H.P. Lovecraft, who has returned to the mortal plane on a mission from the Elder Gods to locate the last true company of the infamous “Necronomicon.”

Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1 #3 (“The Ms. in the Strange High House”) opens as Elvira and Lovecraft's quest takes them to the crumbling mansion home of October Grendel.  Lovecraft now despises Grendel, who had been a colleague.  After Lovecraft's death, Grendel, a pulp writer, made creative use of the unpublished writings Lovecraft had left behind.  Lovecraft is sure that it is Grendel who has the last true copy of the Necronomicon.

Meanwhile, the “Great Old One” known as Nyarlathotep has decided to take matters into his own hands because his trio of lackeys keeps failing to secure the Necronomicon.  He is right on Elvira and Lovecraft's trail, and nothing can stop him... except an enterprising Mistress of the Dark who sure knows how deal with nards.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1 #3, one of many Dynamite/David Avallone Elvira comic books that I have read and enjoyed.

Writer David Avallone and artist Kewber Baal have turned out to be quite a team.  Baal art's gets prettier in style and stronger in storytelling with each chapter.  Baal spins Avallone's humorous tales into sparkling tales of comic horror and horror comedy.  Meanwhile, Avallone takes advantage of Baal's solid storytelling chops to run through the comic possibilities of the dour H.P. Lovecraft.

Walter Pereyra's colors keep everything looking nice and pretty, and Taylor Esposito's lettering brings out the hell in the story.  I expected really good things from Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft, and I'm getting it.  I expect you to read Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Elvira and of David Avallone's Elvira comic books will want to read Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1.
