Review: Adult Swim's "UZUMAKI" Miniseries: Episode 1 is Crazy, Scary and Cool

TV IN MY EYE No. 1 by Leroy Douresseaux

“Uzumaki” Episode 1 (2024)
Running time:  24 minutes; TV-MA
DIRECTOR:  Hiroshi Nagahama
WRITER:  Aki Iazmi (based upon the manga by Junji Ito)
PRODUCERS:  Jason DeMarco (executive producer) and Maki Terashima-Furuta
COMPOSER: Colin Stetson

ANIMATION/HORROR

Starring:  (English dub voices) Abby Trott, Robbie Daymond, Cristina Valenzuela, Aaron LaPlante, Mona Marshall, Doug Stone, and Max Mittelman

"Uzumaki" is a four-episode, animated, horror television miniseries from director Hiroshi Nagahama.  The series is a joint production between Cartoon Network's “Adult Swim” programming block and Production I.G USA, the American division of the Japanese animation studio, Production I.G.  The first episode of Uzumaki made its debut on Adult Swim Saturday, September 28, 2024 and became available to stream on the Max service Sunday, September 29, 2024.  There is both an English-language and Japanese-language version of this miniseries, and this review is based on the English version.

"Uzumaki" is an adaptation of the manga (Japanese comics), Uzumaki, originally published from 1998 to 1999 and created by Junji Ito.  Uzumaki the anime is set in the coastal Japanese village where a high school couple confronts the spiral pattern that seems to be haunting the village.

"Uzumaki" Episode 1 opens in Kurouzu, a small Japanese coastal village where we meet Kirie Goshima (Abby Trott), a high school girl who is traveling to Kurouzu Station.  There, she plans to meet her boyfriend, Shuichi Saito (Robbie Daymond).  Upon his arrival, Shuichi seems withdrawn, and his moodiness apparently involves his father.  It seems that Mr. Saito (Aaron LaPlante) has become obsessed with the whorled pattern known as the “spiral” (uzumaki).

Initially, Kirie laughs off Shuichi's concerns, but she eventually personally experiences Mr. Saito's weirdness.  Soon, she is noticing strange and horrifying things herself.  The most horrifying may involve her friend, the very popular teen girl, Azami Kurotani (Cristina Valenzuela).

Junji Ito's Uzumaki manga runs well over 600 pages, so the creators of its anime adaptation have streamlined the story in order to fit a narrative that won't be even one hundred minutes long.  That doesn't bother me all that much as long as they capture the existential sense of dread and cosmic horror that is Uzumaki.

Uzumaki's animation is in black and white, not color, and the character and production design mimic Ito's drawing and graphic design style as closely as they can.  In fact, the anime filmmakers' fidelity to Ito's aesthetic adds another layer of uncanny to this already uncanny series.  So I can overlook, the fact that – judging by Episode 1 – this series does not adopt the hauntingly patient, measured, drawn-out pace of Ito's manga.

Much of the body horror that this anime depicts is as disturbing as that found in live-action body horror films.  Combine that with persistently eerie sound design and it makes this one of the most chilling, scary, and troubling animated series every broadcast on American cable television.

The English voice performances are, quite frankly, superb – from the leads to the supporting players.  They make it seem as if all the freaky things they are seeing are real, even surreal, but never fake and contrived.  I won't spoil "Uzumaki" Episode 1 for those who have not yet seen it, but it ends with some body horror that had me pressed against the back of my couch.

Comics Review: "THE MAGIC ORDER 5 #1" is Absolutely Ultimate

THE MAGIC ORDER 5 #1 (OF 6)
DARK HORSE COMICS/Netflix

STORY: Mark Millar
ART: Matteo Buffagni
COLORS: Giovanna Niro
LETTERS: Clem Robins
EDITOR: Daniel Chabon
EDITORIAL: Sarah Unwin
COVER: Matteo Buffagni Giovanna Niro
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Matteo Buffagni; Jae Lee with June Chung
32pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (September 2024)

Rating: 18+

The Magic Order created by Mark Millar at Netflix

“The Death of Cordelia Moonstone”

The Magic Order 5 is a six-issue miniseries from writer Mark Millar and artist Matteo Buffagni.  This is the fifth installment of The Magic Order series, which began with the 2018-19 miniseries written by Millar and drawn by Olivier Coipel.  The Magic Order is a band of sorcerers, magicians, and wizards – with a focus on the Moonstone family – that live ordinary lives by day, but protect humanity from darkness and monsters of impossible sizes by night.  Colorist Giovanna Niro and letterer Clem Robins complete the series creative team.

The Magic Order 5 #1 opens in the aftermath of the end of Madame Albany and the “wizard wars.”  Cordelia Moonstone is preparing for the end, but a new case has dropped itself in front of her.  A woman named Carly Summers has had two of her children kidnapped eight years apart by a man who never opens his eyes.  He also beats Carly with a baseball bat before snatching away each child.

Cordelia's investigation, however, with her apprentices, Gator Lloyd and Ashley McPherson, goes bad.  The time to pay the ultimate prices for her sins is now.

THE LOWDOWN:  This is the second time that I have been on any kind of list that provides PDF copies of titles published by Dark Horse Comics.  The latest received is The Magic Order 5 #1.

The Magic Order #1, The Magic Order 2 #1, The Magic Order 3 #1, and The Magic Order 4 #1 all started off with a bang.  Why open with a whimper when you can medieval on your reader's ass and he or she will gladly come back for more.  Mark Millar is probably the only “mainstream” comic book writer who consistently delivers outstanding pop comics.  He has taken many of the genres and sub-genres in which Marvel and DC Comics' ply their trade and lifted them to the heights of high-concept, inventive entertainment.

One of them is magical fantasy, and Mark has made The Magic Order explosive and outrageous in a way that Marvel has not with its various Doctor Strange comic book series.  If you want to read a comic book that is as close to the intensity and insanity of Marvel Studios' 2022 film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, then you don't want a Doctor Strange comic book.  You want The Magic Order 5 #1.

The art team of Matteo Buffagni and colorist Giovanna Niro deliver stellar work in this debut issue.  It is as if they are doing fine art Eurocomics for a Louvre publication.  Buffagni's art makes the world of the natural and supernatural a seamless whole where no one's power makes him or her safe.  Niro's color blends the horrific with the surreal to prepare us for many surprises to come.  Finally, Clem Robins's lettering is the machine gun cherry on top of this narrative.

The Magic Order 5 is supposed to conclude this franchise.  Dear readers, let us gather here today and for the next five issues for what I suspect will be the grandest of send-offs.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Mark Millar and of The Magic Order will want to read The Magic Order 5.

Sabrina in “Awakening!”

Sabrina the Teenage Witch is an Archie Comics character that was created by writer George Gladir and artist Dan DeCarloSabrina Spellman first appeared in Archie's Madhouse #22 (cover-dated: October 1962).

Archie is releasing a trio of “annual spectaculars” that involve the machinations of a new character, “Mother Striga.”  She makes her debut in Sabrina's Annual Spectacular, No. 1.  Her debut story will continue in the forthcoming Archie Halloween Spectacular, No. 1 (October 2, 2024) and Josie and the Pussycats Annual Spectacular, No. 1 (November 6, 2024).

Sabrina Annual Spectacular offers four reprint stories and opens with the new five-page story that introduces Mother Striga, “Awakening!”  It is written by Ian Flynn; drawn by Steven Butler (pencils) and Lily Butler (inks); colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

“Awakening!” opens in the neighborhood of “Eyegore Estates,” the place that hosts all the things that go “bump in the night.”  Sabrina the Teenage Witch and her cat, Salem, are shocked to discover that everyone is acting like zombies... even the zombies.

Soon, Sabrina learns that her nemesis, Amber Nightstone, has unleashed an evil more powerful than she expected.  It's Mother Striga, the first witch and the mother of all witches!

THE LOWDOWN:  Over the last few years, Archie's marketing department has been sending PDF copies of some of their titles for review.  One of the most recent is the new one-shot comic book, Sabrina Annual Spectacular, No. 1.

In the the opening story, “Awakening!,” writer Ian Flynn teases big things to come, but this first chapter can really only tease.  The stars here are the art team of penciller Steven Butler, inker Lily Butler, and colorist Glenn Whitmore.  They create a playfully macabre and pop Gothic sensibility that really sells this story's setting, plot, and characters.  Whitmore's other-worldly, almost psychedelic colors are the perfect accompaniment to the Butlers' Charles Addams' like aesthetic in this story.  Also, Jack Morelli's lettering puts the finishing touch to this delightful tale.  Although “Awakening!” is only five pages long, it is really a classically cool comics story.

Two of the reprint stories are from Sabrina's creators, George Gladir and Dan DeCarlo.  The classic Sabrina story, “Haunt Taunt,” is written by Gladir and drawn by Bob Bolling and Rudy Lapick and originally published in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch #60 (cover dated: June 1980).  DeCarlo pencils “Strange Love,” written by Frank Doyle and published in Sabrina, the Teenage Witch #1 (cover dated: April 1971).

Dear readers, I will always recommend classic and classic-style Archie Comics stories.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic-style Archie Comics and of Sabrina the Teenage Witch will definitely want to get a copy of Sabrina Annual Spectacular, No. 1.
