SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW:
“Kraven the Hunter” has already established itself as having the lowest opening weekend debut of any film carry the Marvel brand, but it is a lot better than many of the other comic book films that came before it

Star Aaron Taylor-Johnson is indeed a star as he carries this film to victory, and he maximizes several intense scenes with co-star, Oscar-winner Russell Crowe

You don't have to be a fan of comic book movies to enjoy “Kraven the Hunter” because its intensity and its extreme and extremely violent action scenes and sequences are exceptionally entertaining

Kraven the Hunter is a 2024 action movie and superhero film from director J.C. Chandor.  The movie is based on the Marvel Comics character, Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter, that was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko and first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #15 (cover dated: August 1964).  This is also the sixth film in “Sony's Spider-Man Universe” (SSU) series.  The film focuses on a hunter of men and his complex relationship with his father, a ruthless Russian crime lord, which starts him down the path to becoming the greatest hunter of men in the world.

Kraven the Hunter opens in Northern Russia at a prison.  Of particular interest is Prisoner #0864, but soon, prison security and imprisoned Russian gangster, Semyon Chorney (Yuri Kolokolnikov), will learn that this prisoner is really a legendary assassin known as “The Hunter.”  Who is “The Hunter?”

He is really Sergei Kravinoff (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), the elder son of brutal Russian crime lord, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe).  Sixteen years before The Hunter killed Chorney, Nikolai took Sergei and his younger son, Dmitri, on a hunting expedition in Northern Ghana.  A terrible accident leaves Sergei near death until a local young woman intervenes in a manner that changes Sergei in ways he never imagined.

In the present day, Sergei goes by the name “Kraven.”  His activities as “The Hunter” have earned him the ire of many criminals.  Kraven has a kill-list, and once someone is on it, they don't get off until he kills them.  Kraven reunites with Calypso (Ariana DeBose), the young woman who saved him sixteen years earlier.  Now, an adult, Calypso is an attorney, and Kraven asks her to assist him in his activities as “The Hunter” by finding information on his targets.

However, Kraven himself is now being hunted.  Wannabe Russian crime boss, Aleksei Sytsevich (Alessandro Nivola), and his ally, “The Foreigner” (Christopher Abbott), have targeted Kraven's brother, Dmitri (Fred Hechinger), now an adult, as a way to trap their prey.  Kraven will have to prove to his enemies that he is indeed the world's greatest hunter and also its most dangerous apex predator.

Kraven the Hunter is sixth film in “Sony's Spider-Man Universe” line of films.  It follows Venom (2018), Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), Morbius (2022), Madame Web (2024), and the recently release, Venom: The Last Dance (2024).  This film series stars characters and properties commonly associated with Marvel Comics' character, Spider-Man.  Sadly, media reports indicate that Kraven the Hunter will be the last entry in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, and that's a shame because Kraven the Hunter deserves a sequel.

Most movie actors could not have saved Kraven the Hunter, if it did indeed need saving, as industry and fan gossip indicated.  If we accept those arguments, dear readers, that Kraven the Hunter needed saving, then Aaron Taylor-Johnson is indeed this film's savior.  Taylor-Johnson is a talented young actor, and he can certainly portray the tough-guy hero or antihero in a way that seems genuine, if not outright real.

Without Taylor-Johnson, I think Kraven the Hunter would still be a really entertaining film.  The screenplay, regardless of whatever number of writers contributed to it, intrigued me.  Director J.C. Chandor deftly weaves the film's story across continents and through shifts in plot that keeps things so interesting and involved that I didn't have time to search for plot holes and inconsistencies.  Also, Russell Crowe as Nikolai Kravinoff makes his scenes with Taylor-Johnson's Kraven feel ultra edgy and especially dangerous.

With Taylor-Johnson, however, Kraven the Hunter, is not only a really entertaining film, but it is also an exceptional superhero spin-off comic book film.  As comic book and superhero movies go, Kraven the Hunter is kind of like a B-movie or, at least, a B-list film, but you, dear readers, don't have to be a comic book fan to enjoy the film or its star.  As Kraven, Taylor-Johnson has such animal magnetism; I wanted to see him be in action-mode and be violent.  Taylor-Johnson has true movie star qualities, such as charisma and presence, and girl, the camera absolutely loves him.  Seriously, Taylor-Johnson carries Kraven the Hunter past what most other actors would have done – all the way to whatever kind of cinematic glory a Spider-Man-adjacent film can have.

Marvel Comics fans will likely enjoy the fact that several Spider-Man-related characters appear in the film, some of them surprisingly so.  Still, this film is about Kraven the Hunter, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson makes every subplot, setting, and the other character bow down to his “king of the jungle” performance.  Kraven the Hunter is good, surprisingly and shockingly good, because its leading man knows how to be a beast.

Comics Review: "NOW #13" Offers Comics From Around the World

NOW: THE NEW COMICS ANTHOLOGY #13
FANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS

CARTOONISTS: Roman Muradov; Nathan Gelgud; Caitlin Skaalrud; Stacy Gougoulis; Cyntha Alfonso; Josh Pettinger; Ross Murray; Steven Weissman; Emil Friis Ernst; Kayla E.
DESIGN: Kayla E.
EDITOR: Eric Reynolds
COVER: Kayla E.
BACKCOVER: Kayla E.
ISBN: 978-1-68396-963-1; paperback (May 2024)
112pp, Color, $12.99 U.S.

NOW: The New Comics Anthology is an alternative-comics anthology series launched in 2017 and edited by Eric Reynolds.  Now is published by alt-comix and art comics publisher, Fantagraphics Books.  Over its four-plus decades of existence, Fantagraphics has published what is probably the most diverse collection of comic book anthologies in the history of North American comic books.  That line-up includes such titles as Anything Goes, Critters, Mome, Pictopia, and Zero Zero, to name a few.

NOW: The New Comics Anthology #13 offers a selection of works from ten cartoonists and comics creators, as well as a back cover “comics strip” from one of its contributors, Kayla E.  Now #13, as usual, holds to editor Eric Reynolds' creed (from NOW #1) that this anthology showcase “...as broad a range of quality comic art as possible...”

The current contributors list also includes a Leroy favorite, the great Steven Weissman.  But let's take a look at each of Now #13's cartoonists' contributions individually:

THE LOWDOWN:  The illustration that acts as Now #13's cover art is entitled “There is a Great Void,” and is produced by Kayla E.  Kayla is all over this issue.

“Conceptual Illustration” by Roman Muradov:
This is a funny one-pager about a particular moment in an art/illustration class.  It reminds me of the stories friends of mine told me about disputes between instructors and professors and students in college art classes.

“Paul Schrader on Big Decisions and Pauline Kael” and “Paul Schrader: Man of His Word” by Nathan Gelgud”:
Cartoonist Nathan Gelgud's comics are sometimes about the movies and movie stars, and he offers two such entries in Now #13.  The first is this volume's second story, “Paul Schrader on Big Decisions and Pauline Kael.”  The second is this volume's fourth story, “Paul Schrader: Man of His Word.”  Both of them focus on real-life screenwriter and film director, Paul Schrader, who is best known for his collaborations with director Martin Scorsese.  Schrader wrote Scorsese's 1976 film, Taxi Driver, and co-wrote his 1980 film, Raging Bull.

These two stories portray Schrader, who can be both outspoken and an outspoken asshole, as the put-upon one.  That gives the “adversaries” in both stories a target for their ire, which in turn creates humorous scenarios.  I find these two stories entertaining because I am a fan of American films and of its history, but both stories would be funny even if the characters had different professions.  I could read a rather large collection of these humorous American cinema-related stories, or I'm sure I could enjoy more of Gelgud's work in general.

“How to Make Comics” by Caitlin Skaalrud
If someone were to describe making comics, Skaalrud's contributions to Now #13 perfectly captures what it can be like trying to make comics. Sometimes, it is a vain attempt to orchestrate chaos and then, attempt to make chaos friends with madness and disorder.  Also, “How to Make Comics” is a beautiful and lyrical narrative work.

“Pig” by Stacy Gougoulis:
Told in pages of three-color, with the third color shifting at varying intervals, “Pig” is about love and mortality.  Centering on an elderly woman in need of a heart and on the pig that might provide that heart, Gougoulis' story challenges the reader's perception of how the story should, could, or would end.  I'm not crazy about “choose your adventure” stories because I want to read the author's story even if I don't like the ending (see Anthony Horowitz's Moriarity: A Novel).  “Pig” exemplifies why we should almost always choose the author's adventure.

“Escape from the Center” by Cynthia Alfonso:
This is like an exhibit at a college art show, and that's okay.  I like it.

“Laird Bell” by Josh Pettinger:
This is a very sharp short, short story that uncomfortably made me think of the recent fatal shooting attack on a CEO of a repulsive health insurance conglomerate.  With “Laird Bell,” Pettinger deftly manages to make what is scary seem sweet, quaint, and humorous.  Sadly, fiction is the only place where scenarios involving stalking and homicidal intent are sweet.

“Anything Sinister” by Ross Murray:
If there is an entry here that could launch a television series on a streaming network, it is New Zealander Ross Murray's “Anything Sinister.”  Focusing on a woman beset by a mysterious and debilitating back injury, it encapsulates how an unexpected event, especially a lingering medical condition can leave a person without any resources or without enough resources to make his or her life not fall apart. Considering the events of my life these past years, I felt “Anything Sinister” in my heart.  It made me tear-up.

“The Vals Vs. Fresh Gurls” by Steven Weissman:
This story is a lot funnier and more playful than Weissman's usual Now contributions.

“Lizard Person” by Emil Fries Ernst:
The Danish cartoonist offers a story that is impressively metaphorical.  You won't see the ending coming, although it seems obvious once you get there.

“You Cannot Live on Bread Alone” and “L'il Kayla Takes a Tumble” (back cover) by Kayla E.:
Kayla E. takes old comics and re-purposes them for her dark tales of domesticity and modern life.  If the classic TV series, “I Love Lucy,” were created today, it would be closer to Kayla E.'s vision than it would be to the original 1950s series.

I usually pick a “best of” entry after each edition of Now that I review.  My favorite Now #13 entry is “Anything Sinister” by Ross Murray.  The truth is that I could have picked any of several stories as my Now #13 favorite.  This edition of the series really emphasizes something that can get lost in the focus on the art comics aspects of Now, and that is the fact that this anthology has featured and continues to feature some excellent storytelling in the form of the comics medium.  Also, there is a nice international flavor to Now #13.

If Now were a prose anthology, critics would call it “literary.”

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic alternative-comics anthologies and of The New Yorker will want to discover NOW: The New Comics Anthology.

Review: "FRIDAY THE 13TH: The Final Chapter" Now Seems Quaint

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 56 of 2024 (No. 2000) by Leroy Douresseaux

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
Running time:  91 minutes (1 hour, 31 minutes)
MPAA – R
DIRECTOR:  Joseph Zito
WRITERS:  Barney Cohen; from a story by Bruce Hidemi Sakow (based on characters created by Victor Miller and Ron Kurz & Martin Kitrosser and Carol Watson)
PRODUCER: Frank Mancuso, Jr.
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  João Fernandez (D.o.P.)
EDITORS:  Joel Goodman with Daniel Loewenthal
COMPOSER:  Harry Manfredini

HORROR

Starring:  Erich Anderson, Judie Aronson, Peter Barton, Kimberly Beck, Corey Feldman, Joan Freeman, Crispin Glover, Lawrence Monoson, Alan Hayes, Barbara Howard, Camilla More, Carey More, Bruce Mahler, Lisa Freeman, Bonnie Hellman and Frankie Hill with Ted White

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is a 1984 slasher horror film directed by Joseph Zito.  It is a direct sequel to the 1982 film, Friday the 13th Part III, and is the fourth movie in the Friday the 13th movie franchise.  The Final Chapter finds Jason Voorhees revived after being declared dead and then, returning to Crystal Lake where he stalks a group of friends renting a nearby house.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter opens in the aftermath of the massacre at “Higgins Haven,” the old home near Crystal Lake (as seen in Friday the 13th Part III).  The police clean up the scene, picking up the bodies of ten victims.  They were all killed by Jason Voorhees (Ted White), the killer of Crystal Lake.  This time, however, Jason has also been pronounced dead, and his body is picked up and sent to the Wessex County Medical Center Morgue (apparently somewhere in southern New Jersey).  Somehow, Jason spontaneously revives and kills a morgue attendant and a nurse on his way out the door and back to Crystal Lake.

Meanwhile, a group of six teenage friends:  Paul (Alan Hayes), Sam (Judie Aronson), Doug (Peter Barton), Sara (Barbara Howard), Ted (Lawrence Monoson), and Jimmy (Crispin Glover), have arrived at the house in the countryside near Crystal Lake that they are renting.  Right across from that house is another home where Mrs. Jarvis (Joan Freeman) lives with her two children:  her teen teenage daughter, Trish Jarvis (Kimberly Beck) and her twelve-year-old son, Tommy (Corey Feldman), along with their dog, Gordon.  The visiting group of teens also meets and befriends a pair of twin sisters, Tina (Camilla More) and Terri (Carey More).

Later, Trish and Tommy meet Rob Dier (Erich Anderson), a strapping young man who claims that he is visiting the area to hunt bear, but who is really hunting Jason for killing his sister, Sandra Dier.  What they don't know is that Jason is already hunting them all.

[NOTE: Rob's sister, Sandra, and her boyfriend, Jeff, were killed together by Jason in  Friday the 13th Part II.]

The first few minutes of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter are a sequence of highlights from the first three films:  Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part II (1981), and Friday the 13th Part III.  The third film was originally going to be the end of the series, just as this fourth film was going to conclude the series, so the beginning of this fourth film summarizes for the audience what has been going on at and around Crystal Lake.  Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter was the first film in the series that I saw, and is one of only two in the series that I have actually watched in a movie theater (the other being 1989's Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan).

So forty years later, what do I think of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter?  I remember that I kinda liked it the first time I saw it, although I was shocked by the number of people Jason killed – thirteen by my count, although fourteen is possible.  Originally, I was surprised by how fast the narrative had Jason dispatching his victims, and forty years later, I still think that.

Like the third film, I think The Final Chapter actually presents several good characters.  In fact, the six teens, the Jarvis family members, and Rob Dier all have personalities and potential that would make for decent character drama or melodrama, as it may be.  In the end, however, they are merely meat for this franchise's beast, Jason Voorhees.  Also, I think Corey Feldman's Tommy is the only character that really gets a chance at a showcase of character and emotion.

In the final analysis, The Final Chapter is better than most of the films in the series that followed it, but it isn't as good or as classic as the films that preceded.  If you want to know which is my favorite, dear readers, it is the second film, although I think the original is still the series' best film.  Still, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is a nice way to make a tetralogy out of a trilogy.
