Review: Netflix's "UGLIES" is Ernest, Lightweight Entertainment

SUMMARY OF THE REVIEW:

Uglies is an entertaining and good, but not great science fiction film, but unlike The Hunger Games films, Uglies leans more towards teen viewers than it does towards a general adult audience

The film has high production values, which really show in the scenes that take place in “The City”

Although it leans towards younger viewers, Uglies makes points about conformity and individuality as fiercely as grown-up science fiction films

Uglies is a 2024 American science fiction-drama film from director McG. The film is based on the 2005 novel, Uglies, by Scott Westerfeld. Uglies is a Netflix Original and debuted on the Netflix streaming service September 13, 2024. Uglies the movie is set in a futuristic society in which everyone is considered “ugly” until the receive the compulsory operation that makes them “pretty,” and it focuses on a teen girl who begins to have doubts about the surgery.

Uglies opens in a world that once saw civilization fall apart. In the future, humanity exhausts the planet of all its natural resources. The result is chaos, war, and destruction. Eventually, science creates a new energy source and also develops a surgery that makes everyone “pretty.” This new society believes that if everyone is perfect and thinks alike, then, there won't be any conflict. Everyone gets the surgery which transforms them into one of the “Pretties” at the age of 16.

When the story begins, Tally Youngblood (Joey King) is three months away from her 16th birthday and her surgery. She lives in a dorm with all the other kids who have not had the surgery and who are known as “Uglies.” However, her friend, Peris (Chase Stokes), is about to have the surgery that will make him pretty. Tally and Peris promise to keep in touch after he moves to “the City” where all the “Pretties” live, but things don't work out as they planned.

Tally befriends fellow “ugly,” Shay (Brianne Tju), and Shay has a secret. There is a place outside the City called “The Smoke.” It is a land of freedom and nature, and the people there have not had the surgery. The community is lead by the mysterious David (Keith Powers). Tally is intrigued, but she is caught in the middle. One part of her wants to be independent and different, but another part of her wants to have the surgery, become pretty, and look like everyone else. The decision Tally makes will change the lives of people both in the City and in the Smoke.

I have not read the novel, Uglies, or its sequels. However, I became familiar with the series through a pair of paperback original graphic novels based on the books, Uglies: Shay's Story and Uglies: Cutters, both released in 2012.

I don't see Uglies the movie as being similar to other films based on young adult (YA) dystopian science fiction novels, such as The Hunger Games (2012) and Divergent (2014). Uglies has me thinking about another dystopian science fiction film adapted from a novel. That would be the 1976 film, Logan's Run, based on the 1967 novel, Logan's Run, which was written by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. I recently watch Logan's Run on the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) cable network, and I thought of it as I watched Uglies. Both stories deal with characters forced to decide whether it is better to live in a safe, clean, and conformist, though macabre dystopian society or in the great wide and wild open.

Beyond similarities to the aforementioned films, Uglies deals with themes of change, both emotional and physical. Yes, Uglies can seem superficial at times. The film's special visual effects turn the City into a shining and gleaming Oz of non-stop parties under a sky lit up pyrotechnic fireworks. Behind the prettiness, however, is Joey King as Tally doing her best to convey the internal struggles inside the girl. King delivers a strong performance that sells the world of Uglies the film because it would crumble without a strong dramatic lead, which King is here. King makes Tally's conflicts seem genuine, and I often found myself confused by her motivations and actions because they felt like the result of an internal struggle. As slight as the film feels, King makes Tally feel like a real young woman struggling with a decision that will change her in ways she may not like, but a change she believes she has to accept.

The Uglies novel is the first in a series, so Uglies the movie could have a sequel. While it is good, but not great, Uglies is still a dystopian sci-fi film that the family can enjoy together.

Graham may be best known for performing the "Dalek" voices on the British TV classic, "Doctor Who," from 1963 to 1979. He also performed several voices on Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbirds" (1965-66). Graham is best known as the voice of "Grandpa Pig" for the British preschool animated series, "Peppa Pig."

From THR: American musician and singer, Tito Jackson, has died at that age of 70, Sunday, September 15, 2024. Tito was best known as the brother of Janet Jackson and the late Michael Jackson. Tito was an original member of the pop and R&B musical group, "The Jackson Five" (later known as "The Jacksons"), acting as the group's guitarist and backup singer. Tito recorded at 16 studios albums with the group, and he recorded two solo studio albums. He received three Grammy Awards nominations for his work with The Jackson 5/The Jacksons. Chapter Five: “Do You R'leyh Want to Hurt Me?”

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character,” known as “Elvira.” Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name. As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s.

Elvira also appeared in comic books, beginning in 1986 with the short-lived series from DC Comics, Elvira's House of Mystery. In 2018, Elvira returned to comic books via Dynamite Entertainment. Elvira's latest comic book series is Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1. The series is written by David Avallone; drawn by Kewber Baal; colored by Walter Pereyra; and lettered by Taylor Esposito. In this new series, Elvira joins the ghost of infamous horror and fantasy author, H.P. Lovecraft, who has returned to the mortal plane on a mission from the Elder Gods to locate the last true company of the infamous “Necronomicon.”

Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1 #5 (“Do You R'leyh Want to Hurt Me?”) does not open in the domain of Nodens, Lord of the Abyss, as Lovecraft had wished it. Instead, the late great “Master of Cosmic Horror” and racist finds himself in R'leyh, the dominion of Cthulhu, along with the “Great Old One” known as Nyarlathotep... and Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, of course.

Lovecraft hopes that presenting the last real copy of the Necronomicon to Cthulhu will earn him favors. When Shoggoth joins Cthulhu, the truth will be revealed, but will these “Great Old Ones” give a f**k anymore than the other old ones? And how will Elvira come out of this?

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1 #5, one of many Dynamite/David Avallone Elvira comic books that I have read and enjoyed.

In the fifth and final issue of Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft, writer David Avallone proves that he doesn't have to save his best for last. He always has some his best for the entire narrative enterprise. He takes the piss outta Lovecraft and the starch outta his cosmic imaginings. Don't take everything so seriously, and you can enjoy a romp (of a sorts) with Elvira. Otherwise, you might suffer a fate worse than death and destruction... or that is my interpretation of Avallone's humor.

Artist Kewber Baal remains pitch perfect for Avallone, and I hope they work together more in the future. Baal's art gets prettier in style and stronger in storytelling with each chapter. He creates the comic timing, visually and graphically, in a way that makes this entire series sparkle with humor and wit. Walter Pereyra's colors keep everything looking nice and pretty, and Taylor Esposito's lettering brings out the hella comedy in the story.

I expected really good things from Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft, and I got it. Now, I expect you to read Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft, dear readers, in the eventual trade paperback collection.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Elvira and of David Avallone's Elvira comic books will want to read Elvira Meets H.P. Lovecraft Volume 1.

Chapter III: “Cry Havoc”

Fire and Ice is an animated epic, dark fantasy, adventure film directed by Ralph Bakshi. The film is the result of a collaboration between Bakshi and the legendary fantasy painter, Frank Frazetta, with the film's screenplay being written by veteran comic book writers, Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway.

In 2022, Dynamite Entertainment announced that it had gained the license to produce a comic book series set in the world of Fire and Ice. The series would act as a prequel to the film. Fire and Ice Volume 1 is written by Bill Willingham; drawn and colored by Leonardo Manco; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry and Taylor Esposito. War is coming, and it will rage between the realms of Ice and Fire. Many tribes, cities, and nations will be caught in the middle, some fated to be ground into oblivion because of it. Who will be the saviors and heroes?

Fire and Ice Volume 1 #3 (“Cry Havoc”) finds the world of Fire and Ice embroiled in a terrible war. Prince Taro arrives at the Firekeep to deliver a warning to his father, King Jarol, about the coming battles and foes.

After discovering that her precious son, Kaledan, has been assassinated, Juliana, Queen of the Icelands is ready to unleash her vengeance upon the Ice Kingdom, the people she was told had killed Kaledan. She was told this by her younger son, Nekron, who actually murdered his brother in a bid to be the heir to the throne. Juliana has complicated plans, however; she is trying to bring Kaledan back to the world of the living.

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Fire and Ice Volume 1 #3, which is one of the few Frank Frazetta-related comic books I have read in a long time.

I have never seen Fire and Ice the film, except for a few minutes so long ago that I can't remember that time or what I saw. I am a fan of the film's director, Ralph Bakshi, especially of his 1977 film, Wizards. Like a lot of people, I also enjoy looking at Frank Frazetta's paintings.

Fire and Ice #3 arrives ninth months after the arrival of the second issue, and over thirteen months after the debut of Fire and Ice Volume 1 #1. These delays are not serving the narrative very well. Writer Bill Willingham scatters characters and subplots across the overall narrative, and the chapters seem arbitrarily divided. I thought readers could enjoy Fire and Ice Volume 1 #1 without having seen the movie, but I ended up reading the Wikipedia page on the film. Some of you, dear readers, may also want to take this approach. I found myself a little more in the dark while reading the second issue, and that's the case with this third issue, too. It is not that this Fire and Ice comic book is not exciting or interesting; it is that it seems broken up and disjointed.

I like the beautiful art of Leonardo Manco, which yields clean storytelling. He is doing his best to make this narrative seem clear, so he is the star creative here. He makes Fire and Ice Volume 1 enjoyable, but I hope that the fourth issue does not take so long to arrive. I also hope the fourth issue tightens up the narrative quite a bit.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Ralph Bakshi and Frank Frazetta will want to try the comic book, Fire and Ice Volume 1.
